President's Message

It's sure nice to be back in Hawaii. BUT I'm ready to go on another ski trip. How about you? As to Big White, I'm sure some club members have sent their good stories and thank you's for you to read farther on in the newsletter. I won't steal their thunder. I'll just thank everyone who helped out or made us laugh and have fun. I could thank lots of people by name, but it would sound like one of those long Oscar Night speeches. Let me say simply I'm very glad I went on this trip. It was lots of smiles, a little mischief, and only minor mishaps.

I miss some of the people from past trips. If you know a person who was a club member before. Do us all a favor, reach out to that person, tell them they are missed and invite them back to the club.

Next year's trip
...........(drum roll) the envelope please.........
Oops, we are still taking nominations at the March and April meetings with the vote in May. Unless a decision is reached and a early vote is called for by a member. The survey of 34 members at the after trip party produced these results.
Top three resort votes were:
Vail--9, Snowmass--6, and some place called: No Preference--4.
Top three maximum affordable trip prices were:
$2,000--11, $1,700--5, $1500--7.
Importance of ski in/ski out:
--26 voted in favor
Importance of night life got:
--17 votes to party.
So, where are we going to go "adult camping" at a ski resort next year? Nominations are still open. What's my analysis of this survey's information? It says were going to Vail with ski in/ski out or as close to that as mid to high teens $$$$ will get us. OF Course we will attempt to hold the line against high prices. The board will inquire to see if this scenario is in the ball park before nominations are closed.

Elections to the Board
At the March meeting we will take nominations. Or you may e-mail nominations to me before April 1st. The vote will be at the April 3rd meeting. E-mail votes must be in to me by April 3rd at noon. I remind everyone I will miss some meetings this year and will not be available in '04. We need a least one new at large member and one officer to keep things going smooth.

E-mail
Please forward any e-mail changes to me and Bill Rothe. Also, if you are getting both e-mail and paper, please help us save money and notify Bill Finally, if you miss, delete or lose your copy, notify me and I'll forward you another newsletter.

I'll see you at the one of the activites.........Bye now,
Dave

BIG WHITE SKI TRIP A POWDER SUCCESS!

While Wanda Sowell was "seeking Perfection" (the trail to our condo) the rest of us were seeking fresh powder...which we got! On day two we were lucky to receive about 10-12 inches of fresh snow!!!! And thanks to the rather "cool and dry" conditions that followed, the snow stayed light, soft and fluffy for the remainder of the week. I think I can speak on behalf of everyone that Big White was delightful. A quaint village in which everything was within walking distance. Plenty of options for varied terrain from glade skiing, to well groomed runs, to skiing with the snow ghosts! (but had to watch for those tree holes)

Thanks go out to the folks who shared their "working" Jacuzzis and thanks to Honey for keeping everyone up to date with the social events of the village! Word spread quickly as to where to find the best Italian food, the bestblues music and the craziest après parties. Thanks to Jeff Davis for providing such delightful in-house sing-a-long entertainment. (boy, it'd be tough to have this crowd at a Karaoke party...)

Fortunately, no injuries occurred while skiing, uh, err, uhm, I might add that Bill Hodges tried to take out a few folks waiting at the bottom of the lift but took good aim at the orange fence instead. And of course, leave it to Dave (your Pres) to nearly lose an arm while "tubing" down a snow hill. The "spin" that he requested nearly spun him out of bounds and landedhim on some hard packed snow/ice. However, the injury didn't keep him fromskiing the blacks the next day.

Many kudos go out to all who ran the Nastar course. Congrats to the following medial winners:

Gold: Jim Takara and Steve Spielman.
Silver: Dave Broederdorf, Lori Auhll, Amy Bosich, Jackie Loui, Ross
Kuraya, and Jeff Davis.
Bronze: Toby Kravit, Wanda Sowell and Dee Ruta.

Commendations also go out to:
Jo Yee, Kathy Ung, Myra Yamane, Lynn Takara and Duane Takara for racing along side of everyone. We expect a repeat performance next year of course!

My personal thanks go out to everyone who handled our "Adult Winter Camping" with such ease. I realize that compromise is inevitable when organizing an event such as this. Everyone played well together and always came through to help each other out in time of need. As your organizer, I appreciate everyone's willingness to make these trips a fun, playful and safe event. Much thanks go out to Obie as well for putting together such a nice trip at an affordable price. Just sorry we didn't seem him on the slopes.

Well, it's now time to think about our next year's trip! Rumor is spreading that the hit list includes Vail, Snowmass and a few others. Various informal votes have been tallied and we will again be requesting your input at the upcoming general meetings. Hope to see you there so we can share stories and plan our next adventure!!

Other Big White News

Hawaii Ski Week 2003 was definitely a winner! By popular vote, some individuals were declared winners, too........of dubious distinctions.

Honey Ruppel won the "Most Helpful Person" award for setting up social activities for apres-ski, and for bringing an inflatable palm tree all the way from Hawaii for our group picture..........kind of like a "Lee Cataldi Award"!
Bill Hodges was recognized as the "Person Who Left the Biggest Impression" .....in a snowbank!
Jo Yee won the "Most Courageous" award for participating in NASTAR.
Sherrie Bellehumeur won two awards, one for the best description of snoring in her condo. She was also the winner of the "Left-Handed Compliment" award.
Wanda Sagum won for the longest and fastest skiing......on her back. And,
Toby Kravet was recognized for "Survival of the Foolish", for any number of reasons, including skiing across the half-pipe!

We Need Another Board Member

We need one more ski club member to sit on Board of Directors. In order for this ski club to continue and be successful, it is important to get as much input as possible into important decisions like ski trip accommodations, where to drink on the second Friday of the month and what new activities we can schedule. At the upcoming March General Meeting I will be passing around a "sign-up list"asking for nomination's. At the April General Meeting the members present will vote for a new board member. Anyone interested in helping the ski club board of directors, please come to March General Meeting or email me at Since St. Paddy's Day is the following Monday, I expect to see a bit 'o green in your outfit. Let's get a good start to the holiday. I'll see ya' there and ay' make mine a pint o'black an tan.

Cosmic Bowling at Hickam Air Force Base
Sunday March 30 1:30pm-4:00pm
Back by popular demand, it's time for cosmic bowling. For those who have not participated in "Cosmic" bowling, try your hand at a glow in the dark bowling ball, fun music and psychedelic lights! (your gutter balls are not so
noticeable when it's a bit dark in the alley!) Jim Kelly has been kind enough
to arrange for passes for us to get on base but he MUST HAVE ACTUAL NAMES TO PROVIDE A PASS WHICH MEANS RSVP IS A MUST!

We have reserved 6 lanes, for total of 24 bowlers. We plan on 3 games for a total of $7.00 each which will include shoe rental.

DIRECTIONS:
H1 to Pearl Harbor/Hickam Exit: Displaying your "pass" (given to you by Jim Kelly) will allow you through main gate. Stay in Rt lane and drive under highway overpass. Rt lane circles around overtop of the highway overpass and becomes Kuntz Ave. Stay on Kuntz and turn Rt at Moffet Street. Bowling alley is immediately on Rt. If come to softball fields you've gone too far. (sorry, no street address avail d/t military base) Passes can be distributed at Pau Hana on 3/14 OR can arrange to get from Jim Kelly personally OR can arrange to meet at Hickam entrance.

Sign up sheet at upcoming General Meeting or RSVP to Amy at 396-2981 or Ski Club Hotline 545-SNOW NO LATER than March 20th. As this is on a military base, it must be organized with an accurate human head count! (Editor's note if this were a cattle ranch rather than a military base we would need an accurate bovine head count as well- so consider yourself lucky)
