President's Message

Summers here and we have many activities planned starting off with our annual picnic on the 4th of July at Schofield Barracks. Thanks to the Kellys, we have a prime picnic site. We hope to see Jim back on his feet soon and know he will be back on the course soon with a lower handicap. The Concerts at the Zoo are always enjoyable, along with Hanauma Bay at night among others.

The Trip Committee has put out an sign up sheet for the 2006 Ski Week so please sign up ASAP. Mammoth Mountain came in second in our voting this year so we have decided to offer a Spring Trip on March 4 thru 11, 2006. Please contact or e-mail me if you are interested.

Hope Ill be seeing you all from time to time.

Aloha,
geof

Recent Events

June 4th Campout: On June 4th we packed our car with half of our belongings and headed out to Kualoa Ranch where we were to spend the night. For those of you unfamiliar with Kualoa, this is the site where the movies Jurassic Park, George of the Jungle and Godzilla were filmed; we passed Godzilla's footprint so we must have just missed him. Kualoa has 2 campsites and we were fortunate to get the one with a fantastic view. We could see the gorgeous view of the majestic Ko'olau Mountains sweeping all the way down to the rolling surf of the ocean.

We pitched our tents in an open area that was fairly level, then headed up the road two levels to the Pavilion where the picnic tables and stainless steel counters with porcelain sink were. In the grassy lawn area was a big old campfire surrounded by stones just waiting for us. We settled in for our priority of the hour ...LUNCH! Although Wandi only stayed for a short while, her Zippy's fried chicken lasted an even shorter time. It was delicious!! Craig had his double sized hammock tied up to the pavilion poles and you almost had to make a reservation for it as it was used all weekend. I still dream of lying in that hammock and swinging away....ah...such is life in Hawaii.

Further up the trail, Dave and Amy had the choice location ... a hilltop campsite. You could see their tent from all areas of the valley. They definitely didn't need any air conditioning as the wind blew and blew.

After a very restful day, we barbequed for dinner followed by entertainment of guitar played by Margaret. This was great! We listened to music that we could sing with or just relax to. I fell asleep to the music in the night.

Bright and early we all woke up and showered. You haven't lived until you shower in an open stall with cold water! After a substantial breakfast, cuz you get mighty hungry out in the open air, we hopped into the back of the pickup trucks and went exploring. My admiration for Amy's driving skills went up 100 points. You go girl!

All in all this was a weekend never to be forgotten. The camaraderie that we experienced is something that will always be treasured.

Waikiki. Shell Concert (June 11):

Take a walk in the country with the Makaha Sons and friends at the Waikiki Shell....It was a beautiful night at the shell with 15 ski club members and their friends enjoying the sounds of modern and traditional Hawaiian music. There was plenty of food and drink to share. Linda Giers and her husband saved us a great place on the grass. What was nice about this concert was that it started at 5:30 and ended about 10 pm so we got to enjoy the sunshine, sunset and the stars at night. It was a good turnout for the short notice.... who knows maybe we may do it again next year.

Taste of Honolulu--the day after!

Cheers and mahalo to the SAOH members who volunteered at the Taste of Honolulu on June 26th. This year everyone worked at various wine booths on the new "Wine Tour" which was a delightful change from previous assignments. Fergie, Del and Kathy poured Sterling Vineyards and BV wines. Wanda, Wandi, Carol and Dick dispensed Charles Krug wines, while Shereen, Hans, Bill and Anita manned the Napa Ridge and Coastal Vineyard wine tent. The locations of our wine tents were marvelous since we enjoyed the trade breezes and were close enough to the main stage to hear the entertainment! The main disappointment was that we weren't permitted to taste the wines before we dispensed them to customers! It's difficult describing wines without a personal taste test, but we were able to enjoy the wines after our work shifts. All who volunteered their time enjoyed supporting the Easter Seals' children. Other ski club members arrived afterwards to enjoy the food, music, entertainment and great people-watching (there are some extraordinary people to check out at the Taste of HNL!!). And it was also amazing to see how much food the slim ladies in our ski club could consume in one afternoon! See you next year!

PAU HANA:

July 15 Pau Hana: E&O Trading Company, Ward Center second floor between Compadres and Borders Books 5:30 PM on their lanai. A little background about E&O Trading Company: E&O Trading Company pioneered the Southeast Asian grill concept. Unlike many of today's restaurants that draw from more than one ethnic heritage, E&O takes inspiration from true recipes of many countries in Southeast Asia. Their entrees are inspired by the cuisines of Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and East India and use only the freshest ingredients. The menu includes beef, chicken, lamb, shrimp and fish, in a variety of styles; soups; salads; rice and noodle dishes and Indian flat breads.

E&O Trading Company was originally inspired by a legendary friendship between an English trader and an Indonesian spice merchant. Their flagship restaurant opened in the heart of San Francisco's Union Square district and is recognized for its unique combination of scripted environment and innovative cuisine. E&O Trading Company has earned both critical and popular acclaim for its Southeast Asian food as well as for an exotic ambience that evokes a distant time and place. Pau hana: Specials include their famous corn fritters ($1) and chicken wings ($5). $1 off beers and a daily elixir special for $5
