President's Message

It was good to see many of you at Kapono’s at this month’s Pau Hana. A good time was had by all!  

At last month’s board meeting we decided to discontinue our “Hot Line” and concentrate our funds and efforts on improving our website and making sure it is updated regularly. We have engaged a consultant to help us make it happen and apologize for letting it slide this long. 

We have 40 people signed up for the trip to Vail and need anyone who is thinking about going and has not committed to decide so we can confirm room assignments. I have received many inquiries regarding the Mammoth Mountain trip on March 4 thru 11, 2006 and have decided to offer the ground package and let whom ever will be coming to find their own way there. However there are a bunch of us who are flying into LAX and renting a SUV(s) and driving up. If enough of us want to do that, I am sure it will be cost effective and we will then have the freedom of driving at the resort. Mammoth Springs is pretty spread out and having vehicles definitely will come in handy. Another reason to fly into LAX is that there are no non-stop flights into Reno and after the connecting flight and bus to Mammoth, the actual travel time from HNL is considerably longer. The drive from LAX to Mammoth is 4-5 hours. More info on the Mammoth trip and discussion will be on the agenda at our October 2005 Kick Off meeting. 

We have also decided to take nominations for Ski Week 2007 at our October General Meeting, so if you have a place you would like to see us go to, please be prepared to talk a little about it at the meeting. Nominations will be taken until the conclusion of Ski Week 2005 (Vail) and we will e-mail out the ballots upon our return and count them at our Annual Post Ski Trip Park in mid-February 2006. This change will enable our trip committee to more efficiently plan Ski Week 2007.

New Zealand in Summer

    Two groups from our ski club have recently been skiing in New Zealand, we hope to have some details about their trips soon.

Kapono’s or Bust

We had a record number of ski club members at the pau hana at Kapono...a total of 30 members and friends. ...Kapono was off island but the band that played was excellent. Bill Hodges got most of the women up for dancing...thanks Bill....I wish more of the men would shake their bootie...About half the members stayed till 9pm...Kapono's always is a big draw with them music and ambience of being out door during those summer nights.

Havana Heat at the Academy of Arts

What a sultry night in Havana.....good thing we had those cool margarita to keep us going. It was a packed night at the academy with many of the ski members taking part in Mambo lessons. Dave, Amy, Bill, Anita, Sam, Michael and probably others I could not see were swinging to the beat of the latin band. When they returned to the table they all had smiles on their faces....it must have been goooood....This was also a very well attended event...so lets keep in up....Any more ideas for events let the board members know..

HELP WANTED.......By Kathy Mulledy

The activities committee is looking for ski members to assist with writing up articles about the ski events we have scheduled. Anita and I do not mind writing them but it would be nice to get the members more involved and also to get a different slant on what goes on at these events. In the past we usually would ask members at the events if they would be willing to write up the article....we will try this out and hopefully get some new takes on the going on of the Hawaii Ski Club.

Every Tuesday, starting at 8 p.m., a variety of musicians play jazz at the Musicians' Union Bldg., 949 Kapiolani Blvd. Parking and entry are from Waimanu St. at the back. Plan ahead for an End-of-Summer celebration: Celebrate the final days of summer. Share time with old and new friends. Swim in the pool - Relax in the hot tub. Pool games and fun in the sun. Come join us for another fun pau hana at the Kona Brewery in the Koko Marina (Hawaii Kai). (Last pau hana the ski club had over 25 members attend!) Please come early since Friday pau hanas at this brewpub on the docks of Koko Marina are very popular. Whoever arrives first, please save tables outside overlooking the water.  

The brewery features outdoor seating with unparalleled views of Koko Marina and the lush green mountains. The menu features hand-tossed gourmet pizzas, innovative pupus and sandwiches, salads and desserts made with fresh local ingredients. The brewpub features a state-of-the-art beer delivery system with 24 taps and carries all of Kona Brewing Company's ales and lagers, including several specialty beers and pub exclusives such as Black Sand Porter, Castaway IPA, Da Grind Buzz Kona Coffee Stout, Hula Hefeweizen and Old Blowhole Barley Wine. Tennis Picnic – Sunday, September 25^th 2-6 PM

To all tennis enthusiasts and soon to be: We're having a tennis picnic on Sunday, September 25th, 2:00-6:00pm at the "CORP" (Central Oahu Regional Park) in Waipio. We will have the use of 4 courts for 4 hours, uninterrupted! There will be a tennis clinic on the 1st hour which will be at 2pm, given by one of the tennis pros. If you want to brush up on your skills or just want a good warm up, be there on time, it's worth it! We'll have burgers and hotdogs, chips and soft drinks, and jugs of ice cold water, so there's no need to bring your own water. If you don't have a tennis racquet but would like to come and play, some of us will bring our spares, just let us know. A nominal fee of $5 will be charged for this fun-filled tennis clinic/barbecue picnic event and the rest of the cost will be paid for by your ski club. Mark your calendars and come join the fun and camaraderie!

Mammoth in March 4-11, 2006

    Geof will coordinate this trip and expects interest from about 12 people.  Cost to be around $1200 (+/-).  Sign up will be at the October kick-off meeting.
