PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

As I write this, the Far West Ski Association, an organization of more than one hundred fifty ski clubs in thirteen states, including Alaska and Hawaii, organized into councils (We are in the Northwest Ski Club Council for some reason)  is about to present us with an award for being over fifty years old (we are sixty-one).  We and three additional clubs will be joining the thirteen others which have already been recognized as having attained this "exalted" status.   The oldest club is the Cascade Ski Club (Oregon) which is eighty-six years old (whew!).  What will we get for this you ask?  A plaque.  Where will we hang it?  Hmmm!  Why do we belong to the organization when we don't participate in the ongoing trips and affairs of our member Council?  Good question.  Membership is only $25.00 in the years they charge us.  We have been a member for a number of years and who knows but logistics might enable us to participate in one of their trips some day.  Also, there is strength in numbers.  In 2010, American Airlines was about to end the practice of treating bootbags, together with skis, as one baggage item, charging $100.00 for the additional third bag, and it was feared that the other airlines would follow suit.  The Far West Ski Association was one of the strong voices of protest that convinced American Airlines to nix the idea.

By the time you receive this newsletter, the last of the current Club year, you will also have received or are about to receive your ballot for the annual April election of officers.  You will be asked to return the ballot by email if you are not coming to the General Membership Meeting next Thursday, April 3, at Seven Palms.   There will be opportunity for write-ins, and if you have not already advised us of your interest in joining the Board, you can do so by writing in your own name.  Jon and Momi Kleinschmidt's terms are up, and they will not be running again. We thank them for their two (two year) terms of service.  Geof's and my terms are up, and we will be running again.  Jonathan, Cathy, and Roy will be serving the second year of their two year terms.  If nobody steps up to run, we are left with a Board of only five:  We can have up to ten. We would welcome the fresh ideas and the man/woman power of additional Board Members.  Our ability to offer more than one ski trip a year and a full plate of activities throughout the year depends upon it.

Hope to see you at the upcoming Pau Hana and at the General Membership Meeting on April 3.  I wish I could join the walk at Hoomaluhia this Sunday morning but------I'm not "there" yet.

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

PAU HANA AT RYAN'S GRILL
March 28 (Friday), 4:00 P.M.

I thought we had been back to Ryan's more recently than June of 2012, but I can't find a record of it---so it's time---before they tear down the Ward Center for high priced condos.   Ryan's Grill is on the second level of Ward Center, just opposite the escalator from ground level.   If you are lucky enough to find a good parking spot in the adjoining, street-side garage, you can just walk across (I hope I do because I can't walk "so good" yet). For those of you who might be unfamiliar with Ryan's, it has a humongous beer selection, drinks of all kinds, pretty decent pupus, and has been a favorite Pau Hana location of the downtown crowd (think "Yuppie") since  it's been open.   I'll try to score a table to the left of the entrance, and, hopefully, we can add as the crowd grows.  If you don't see us there, look on the lanai to the far left (behind the bar).   Although members usually arrive when they can,  anybody who can get there at 4:00 P.M., to help me claim "squatters rights" to an appropriately sized table, would be appreciated.

HOOMALUHIA BOTANICAL GARDEN WALK
March 30 (Sunday) 7:00 A.M.

Any Ski Club members interested in doing an early morning Sunday hike (walk) through Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens on March 30, 2014?   We will meet at 7am at the front gate before park gates open. Parking is along the road in front of the gate. We will walk along the road and take a few small hikes along the lake and bring a picnic breakfast or snack at the end.

There is also catch and release fishing from 10am-2pm if you're interested in bringing along a bamboo pole or fishing rod and barbless hooks. (no casting or live bait is allowed)

Directions from Honolulu on the Likelike Hwy: Take Likelike Hwy toward Kaneohe through the tunnel and watch for Anoi Rd on your Right before you reach the Windward City Shopping Center intersection. Turn Right on Anoi Rd and proceed 0.3 miles and Turn Right onto Luluku Rd which ends at the park entrance gate. Directions from Honolulu on the Pali Hwy:  From the Pali Hwy going toward Kailua,  turn left at Castle Junction onto Kam Hwy and proceed toward Kaneohe. Turn Left on Luluku Rd just before you hit Windward City Shopping Center.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Seven Palms Bar and Grill (formerly Sam Sneads)
Navy-Marine Golf Course Club House
943 Valkenburgh St., Honolulu, Hawaii
April 3 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.

Come to our General Membership Meeting at the usual location on April 3 to vote for the 2014-2015 Board.    Although the meeting doesn't "officially" begin until 6:00 P.M., many members start coming at 5:00 for drinks, dinner, and "talking story."   You need to be there by 5:30 P.M. to take advantage of the reduced prices of dinners for two.

PAU HANA AT CATTLE COMPANY
98-1262 Kaahamanu St.
Pearl City, Hawaii
April 25 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.

Another one of my watering holes on the way home from work. It never disappoints. Aside from Moose's on Lewers Street, I can't think of a more economical Happy Hour. $3.00 pints and wells - 50% off on selected pupus and the bartender always allows a couple drinks at Happy Hour prices upon last call. Conveniently located just off the H-1 Waimalu exit, there is plenty parking. Upon leaving there is always a line outside the door so the food must be good or cheap or both, should you choose to dine after the Pau Hana.  Hope to see you there.
