PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
It looks like mango season’s coming to an end which usually marks the middle of my summer which yielded a whole bunch of small to medium South Shore swells though nothing “big” so to speak. On my weekly trips to Maui, it even looks like the air travel has slowed down and leveled off since the demise of Aloha Airlines, and those of you planning to go on our trip in September should have an easy time making travel arrangements. It looks as though tourism has really declined which will result in a relaxing, hassle free trip.
A few of us will be headed to SKI UTAH the last week of January 2009. For those of you who may want to join us, the trip will be low budget, and we plan to drive to as many ski areas that will allow us on the slopes. If you are interested in details, contact Toby Kravet or me.
Our Annual Pool Party @ The Hodges at the end of August will mark the end of summer and the start of another UH Football Season. Hope to see you there.
Aloha,
GEOF
UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:
AUGUST PAU HANA AT RUMFIRE IN WAIKIKI
(Former Espirit Lounge at the Sheraton Waikiki, Validated
parking in SheratonParking structure and for-fee valet parking
August 3 (Sunday) 4 -6 PM
Because many club members don’t want to fight Friday evening traffic, there is a Sunday “pau hana” gathering in Waikiki at the Sheraton’s RumFire Lounge.
RumFire is the hottest new place on Waikiki beach, offering an ambiance - and menu - unlike any other, as well as some of the best views of Diamond Head and that famous beach.
“Because we have a full menu it’s like a restaurant - but it’s not a restaurant and it’s really not a bar,” says restauranteur Sanders. “It’s difficult to put your arms around, but it’s more about the experience. It’s a place you can come off the beach and have a great snack, to coming in and having happy hour with your friends or just watching the sunset, to getting very hip at night. It’s not just a bar, lounge or a nightclub or a restaurant. It’s all of that, depending on the time of day.”
“Private fire pits adorn the stylish outdoor lounge sections, perfect for cozying up with that special someone or socializing with colleagues and friends. The flame-carved fire pits are just one of the well-thought-out elements that create a relaxed, upscale, and warm atmosphere, with a view that simply can’t be beat. With ceiling-high glass windows that slide open to let in the ocean breeze, RumFire lets in all the beauty of a Waikiki beachfront setting.”

SEPTEMBER SUPERFERRY TRIP TO MAUI
September 20 - 21 (Saturday - Sunday)
There's still time to take advantage of the Superferry's low summer promotional
fare and join us for a weekend on Maui, Sept. 20-21. So far, over ten members
have signed up for the trip. With the cost of inter-island airfare rising, the Superferry's promotional fare of $49 one way for Adults and $65 one way for
passenger vehicles, with no fuel surcharge, can't be beat! For children
(2-12yrs), seniors (62yrs+), and retired military, the fare is only $39 one way. And with free use of Geof Chu's condos in Kahului and car pooling to and from
the departure pier, there will never be a better opportunity to enjoy an
inexpensive weekend on the Valley Isle. A visit to Ali'i lavender farm in Kula,
exploring Haleakala National Park, and eating at some of the tastiest
restaurants on Maui are just some of the activities planned. Email me at aaron@hawaiisnowskiclub.com
by August 18th if you want to join us.

HAWAII SKI WEEK, 2009/SAPPORO SNOW FESTIVAL,
JAPAN
Tuesday, February 10, 2009
The Sapporo Snow Festival, which is on the itinerary for the trip, is the biggest winter attraction in Hokkaido. It’s been held annually since 1950 and draws more than 2 million visitors each year. The festival, held in Odori-koen Park, features elaborately sculpted snow and ice statues, some as high as 130 feet. At night, the Park is lighted with thousands of white lights and many of the larger sculptures are also lighted from within.
Susukino is the main nightlife and entertainment district with many restaurants and pubs. This site is best seen at night and differs from the Odori-koen Park sculptures as these sculptures are carved using chain saws and other power tools.
Other attractions are the Sapporo Beer Museum which offers free tours of the museum and also has beer tasting (for a fee.) Check out http://www.sapporobeer.jp/english/guide/sapporo/ for more details.
Ramen Yokocho Lane is a famous alley with only ramen noodle shops. It’s a good way to warm up on a cold night.
Weather tips: It is cold. Temperatures run about 25°F. Layer your clothing and make sure you have gloves or mittens, a warm hat, a hooded jacket (preferably windproof and water resistant) and your footwear has good traction and is water resistant.

PAST EVENTS:
FLAVORS OF HONOLULU – THE DAY AFTER!
June 29
Cheers and mahalo to the Hawaii Ski Club members who volunteered at the 2nd Flavors of Honolulu. Club members worked in wine booths where patrons questioned us about the wines which we were unable to taste until after our shift! Those of us who stayed until the very end chatted and shared glasses of wine with Tom Moffat (the honorary event chair), the owners of HASR Wine Company, and David Booth of Events International. Lori and Wanda stayed so long that they had difficulty exiting the chained parking lot!
All volunteers enjoyed supporting Disabilities Unlimited, eating the variety of foods, listening to music, and experiencing great people-watching. See you there next year!

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION IN WAIKIKI
July 4
In the late of afternoon of July 4th, for the second year in a row, approximately twelve Ski Club Members took Geof up on his offer to meet in his Wakiki Condo for pupus, libations, stories, and laughs prior to the annual Ala Moana Beach Park fireworks show. We had enough food to feed an army as well as wine bestowed upon several of us, the previous Sunday, by vendors at the Flavors of Honolulu at the end of the event (See above). Geof also had his own "wine" to share, but the vintage of Johnny Walker Black was uncertain. Twenty minutes before the show was scheduled to start, we made our way across Kuhio and Kalakaua Avenues to the Beachwalk area, ultimately reached the beach, and sank your feet into warm, wet sand to watch the awesome fireworks display. After washing the sand from our feet, we strolled back to Geof's place where we gabbed for two more hours before calling it a great night. After washing the sand from our feet, we strolled back to Geof's place where we gabbed for two more hours before calling it a great night. Thank you Geof, for your hospitality.
