November 26 (Thanksgiving Thursday) 9:30 A.M. for Potluck; 11:30 A.M. for volunteer service. Help the Salvation Army serve a traditional Thanksgiving dinner to the needy at Blaisdell Center. The pre-service potluck is for all Club members; not just those who are volunteering. Since volunteer service is at lunctime, you will have plenty of time to get to your personal destinations for the holiday.
December 3 (Thursday) General Membership Meeting for this date cancelled. Christmas party, on December 19, will serve as General Membership Meeting.
December 19 (Saturday) 5:00 P.M. Annual Christmas party and Hawaii Kai Boat Parade (see below).
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
As I sit down to "pen" the President's Message, I note that a number of Colorado and Utah Ski areas plan to open this weekend. Actually, Aspen-Snowmass opened for the weekend last weekend thanks to an unexpected snowfall. Park City, our destination for Hawaii Ski Week 2016, is scheduled to open this Saturday, November 21. It's time to open the footlocker, closet, or wherever you keep your winter clothing and equipment to make sure everything is in working order. In this vein, I'd like to thank Board Member Alan Teramura for hauling his skis, tools, and waxing iron over to Schooners on November 5 and delivering a very informative presentation on the general care and tuning of skis. Despite the poor acoustics in our corner of the restaurant, Alan clearly took the mystery out of the tuning process, demonstrated that most of us, who own our own equipment, could save some money in the long run with only a modest investment, and provided some helpful information on preparing skis for storage between seasons.
UPDATES AND CORRECTIONS: With regard to the Thanksgiving morning potluck (to which everyone is invited) and volunteer activity, please note that the potluck gets underway at 9:30 A.M., and the volunteer activity starts at 11:30 A.M. Most of you reading this should have already received a separate email asking you to contact Wanda Sowell ( wanda10s@aol.com ) if you are coming so that she can better coordinate the potluck dishes. As for the Christmas Party, please note that we have moved the start back to 5:00 P.M. to make sure we don't miss the Boat Parade and that, contrary to what I said before, there is some parking available at the building itself. Finally, please note that we have cancelled the General Membership Meeting for December 5: I was reminded, by many of you, that the Christmas party traditionally serves as December's General Membership Meeting.
Unless something else gets scheduled "on the fly," I guess the next time I will be seeing you all is at our Christmas Party on December 19th. I'll be with family on the Mainland for Thanksgiving so will miss the activities at the Blaisdell.
Finally, it's "broken record time" yet again: If you have not yet renewed but intend to do so, please commit before the end of this month when we will be purging the email list of unrenewed members.

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
TRADITIONAL THANKSGIVING VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
SERVING AN EARLY THANKSGIVING DINNER TO THE NEEDY
November 26 (Thursday)
9:30 A.M. for Potluck; 11:30 A.M. for volunteer service
The ski club will again participate in serving a lunchtime Thanksgiving dinner to the needy at the Blaisdell Center on Thanksgiving Day, November 26. Please let me know, roy@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , if you will join in this event, and give me your shirt size and preference for job assignment. The assignment choices are: Waitperson; serves meals to diners, Food Runner; brings food from kitchen to serving line (heavy containers), and Pie Runner; brings pies to serving line. Volunteers will have own potluck "brunch" in an area adjacent to the parking structure, and all Ski Club Members, not just those volunteering, are invited to join the potluck. The shift begins at 11: 30 A.M., but volunteers need to be there by 11:15 A.M. for a briefing. The potluck will be held in the mall area, adjacent to the parking lot and the arena, beginning at 9:30 A.M. Please contact Wanda Sowell, wanda10s@aol.com , if you will be coming to the Potluck so we can better coordinate the dishes.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY

Early scheduling pays off: Sylvia "Sam" Wright has managed to reserve the recreation room/terrace at the Esplanade for our traditional Ski Club Christmas Party on the same date as the annual Boat Parade which begins at 5:30. We don't know what time it will be sailing by the Esplanade, but you might want to come on time to make sure you don't miss it. The boat owners, who are competing for prizes, bend over backwards to decorate their boats with Christmas lights, disguise them as space ships, pirate ships, etc., and costume the crews accordingly. We will be able to take a break from eating, drinking, and gift giving to watch the decorated boats sail by the terrace. This is potluck, BYOB, and, of course, the traditional grab bag gift exchange. Bring a grab-bag gift with approximate value of $15.00 if you wish to participate in the exchange. You are given a raffle ticket, and when your number is called, you have the option of choosing a gift from the "pile" or one that has already been chosen, thereby forcing the original chooser to choose from the pile again: In previous years, the circumstances with some gifts have been beyond hilarious. To get to the Esplanade, turn left off Kalanianaole Highway at Lunalilio Home Road, the last traffic light before the highway goes up the hill towards Hanauma Bay. Drive in the mountain direction approximately .6 of a mile and look for the looming white building complex on the left. While there is limited at the building (eleven guest stalls in the circle at the entrance) there is normally plenty of street parking available. The recreation area is right on the ground level beside the lobby.

HAWAII SKI WEEK, 2016

We will be going to Park City, Utah for the 2016 Hawaii Ski
Week. As many of you know, Vail Resorts has purchased the Park City Mountain
Resort. This summer they plan to install an 8 passenger gondola to connect Park
City with Canyons Resort, already managed by Vail Resorts. This will create, in
their words, the largest ski area in the United States, with over 7,300 acres of
terrain. They also plan a new restaurant at the Park City gondola terminus
(bottom of Silverload lift), and upgrades to the King Kong and Motherlode lifts.
Ski.com will be providing discounted lift tickets, obviously good on both
mountains. The adult 5 day ticket will be $330 and the senior 5 day lift ticket
will be $250. Ski.com will also provide one day lift tickets for Deer Valley for
those of you who want to spend the day there. These tickets will cost $90, which
is a good discount from this year’s $115 window price. As we mentioned earlier,
you may want to purchase an epic pass from Vail Resorts for the season. These
will also be available from Ski.com, but we don’t know the details on this now.
Because you ski club members have stated categorically that ski-in/ski-out
access is a priority, we have chosen to stay primarily at The Lodge at the
Mountain Village. In addition to ski-in/ski-out access, the Lodge is 20 yards
from the Payday Lift, a 6 person high speed lift. There is a mini mall next door
with 4 ski shops and some restaurants. The Lodge offers hotel rooms, studio
suites, and 2, 3 and 4 bedroom condos. We have reserved one 4 bedroom condo,
four 3 bedroom condos and 4 hotel rooms. The hotel rooms have refrigerators and
coffee makers. We say we are staying “primarily” at the Lodge because they do
not offer hotel rooms with two beds. For our singles we have reserved some hotel
rooms across the street at the Shadow Ridge Resort Hotel. These rooms will have
two queen beds. The Park City free shuttle bus stops at the Lodge, and the Lodge
also offers free point to point on demand shuttle service. Main Street, Park
City, with all its shops and restaurants is about 1/2 mile away. The Lodge
features an indoor/outdoor swimming pool, numerous hot tubs, free wireless
internet, a fitness center and their own ice rink (for a fee). The Lodge has
plenty of meeting space for our traditional reception, pot luck and farewell
pizza party.
Our non-stop flights to Salt Lake City are as follows:

Since we are arriving so early, and it is only an hour and a half to Park
City, one could ski on Saturday, our arrival day. That would give you seven days
of skiing.
Of course, transfers to and from the airport are included.
Park City is more expensive than Steamboat. We will be paying about $300 to $400
more for a full package. The full package price (air, transfer, 7 nights
lodging, 5 day lift ticket) will range from $1,800 to $2,000.
This year
we would like to try something different for registration. You will be able to
register and pay for the trip online directly with Ski.com, and pay them
directly by check or credit card. This will relieve the trip committee of some
work, although we will still be responsible for roommate assignments. Pray for snow.

If you are on Facebook, add the HSC as a “friend.” You will be up-to-date with recent HSC activities that members upload. The HSC Facebook page has photos from members on ski trips and at Club activities. You can also include your personal photos and announcements relating to the club for all HSC members to view.
