PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
I was pleased to see so many of you "non Japan trip" people at the Pau Hana Friday night at Nico's. For those of you who weren't there, the restaurant gave us most of the outside area with the umbrella tables, and the weather cooperated for a change: Good omen!! Mahalo, Take, for coordinating the event. For those of you going on the trip, how do you like the personalized Hawaii Ski Club name/luggage tags in the packets? Looks professional, yeah? Kevin did 'em by hand. Mahalo, Kevin
Take a look above. Except for the downtown Pau Hana on February 15, which I will miss because of a Utah trip, we have no further events scheduled until the Post Trips Party on March 17 where we will be voting for the 2014 Hawaii Ski Week. This is ski season when the major purpose of our club comes to the fore and all our other, usual activities are "on hiatus."
As I mentioned in last month's Newsletter, be sure, in the next couple of months, to let your mind wander to next year and where you would like the club to go. Also, if, by any chance, you'd like to join the Board and help steer us to new heights and, maybe, different directions, or to just lend a hand, please let me and/or Kevin know.
Stay healthy, stay safe. I hope to see many of you on the slopes and at our next gathering in Hawaii in March.
Aloha,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
PAU HANA AT
SOHO MIXED MEDIA BAR
80 PAUAHI ST.
DOWNTOWN HONOLULU
February 15
(Friday) 5:00 P.M.
Known for it's late night crowd when most of us are at or going home to get ready to turn in for the night this new spot starts to rock.
However one of the best kept secrets is their Happy Hour from
5-7 PM. One of the owners is from Chicago and his upside down deep dish pizza is
extraordinary along with his Italian Beef and Italian Beef/Sausage Combo
sandwiches that remind you of uniquely Chicago fast food. There's no audio at
that time but there's a lot of seating and other good appetizers including steak
fries with a garlic aioli or chipotle sauce and buffalo wings.
Have been
there a few times, it is located adjacent to the old Blaisdell Hotel/HPU on the
Mauka End of Fort Street Mall. The entrance is on Pauahi Street. There are quite
a few private parking lots in the area, but I have always been able to park on
the street in loading zones and parking stalls which are free after 5:30 PM.
See you there!

POST SKI TRIPS PARTY
with
FINAL VOTE FOR 2014 HAWAII SKI WEEK
Wai'alae Nui Recreation Center, 2203 Halekoa Drive
March 17(Sunday) 5:30 PM
The recreation center in Susan's subdivision, in the "rarified air" near the top of Wai'alie Nui Ridge, proved such a popular location for past events that we are returning for a party celebrating the conclusion of both the Club's 2013 trips. The view is to "die for," and the parking is plentiful. Bring your pictures (we will have some table space for them), bring your stories, bring your decision as to where you want to go next year (if you have not already voted, via email, by that time), and, last but not least, bring your beverage of choice and a dish to share: This is a potluck. The Wai'alae Nui Recreation Center, 2203 Halekoa Drive, is on Wai'alae Nui Ridge above Kahala Mall. If you are coming from Honolulu, get on the H1, take a left on Aina Koa which is the first traffic light after the elevated viaduct has morphed into Kalanianole Highway, go up Aina Koa approximately .4 mile, take a left on Halekoa, and you will find the recreation center on the right approximately 1.5 miles after you have made the turn onto Halekoa: It is just after Ahaku St.

HAWAII SKI WEEK 2013
"Team Hakuba"
last list of details for the 32 of us leaving for the "Snows of
Japan."
1. Bring your passport.
2. Exchange your US dollars for yen before you go.
3. Some credit cards
charge foreign transaction fees - check before using or be surprised!
4.
Dress for winter and snow.
5. Cell phones - check with your service provider
on international roaming if you plan to use your phone in
Japan or be very surprised.
6. Electricity - Japan is on 100V whereas we are
110V for electricity, and you should be fine. Most small
electricals have universal chargers that support 100v-240V. When in doubt,
please check!
7. English speaking assistance - will be available at the
hotel. Ask at the front desk.
8. Know your onsen etiquette!

DEPARTURE:
January 18, Departs HNL at 10:00 am, United
Flight 879
BRING YOUR PASSPORT!
I've input
everyone's mileage account numbers, so you should be able to "see" your
reservation online via the United site. I got most of your preferences for
seating assignments - you will be able to change your seat assignment once you
check in, online, at the United airlines site as early as 24 hours prior to
departure.
You are allowed ONE free bag of 50 lbs, the second bag is $40
unless you are active duty military, have Premier status or a Mileage Explorer
card with United. You can also bring a carry on bag. Flight time is 9 hours and
25 minutes and Lunch will be served on board.
Those flying in with other
airlines or times, meet at the United Baggage claim area for Flight 879 when we
arrive. An English speaking host will meet us and transport us to Hakuba.
Narita to Hakuba -- The bus ride takes approximately 5.5 hours, depending on
traffic, snow, and any other factors. There are NO bathrooms on board, but we
will be making TWO 10 minute stops for bathroom breaks and a snack stop. Please
plan accordingly. If there are any emergencies, we can talk to the guide person.
HOTEL:
We are staying at the Hakuba Mominoki Hotel in western style
rooms, 2 per room unless you paid for a single. For questions about amenities,
check the website: http://www.mominokihotel.com/index-e.html
Breakfast buffet
is included. Use the mornings to meet up with others and figure where you want
to ski/board that day.
RETURN:
Most of us will return on the bus back
to Narita. As of now, the bus will depart at 10:30 am on January 26. We will
have two pit stops on the way back.
Flight back is United 880, departs NRT at
7:25 pm. Dinner will be served on board and the flight time is 6.5 hours. We
will land at 6:55 am.
Just a reminder that while Kevin and I are
coordinating the trip, we are merely that -- coordinators -- and not travel
agents or guides! We don't get any freebies - we are paying the same as you are
to be on this trip so please do NOT get mad at us if we don't know everything
about the hotel, mountain, dining, language, etc. Neither of us have been there
either so it will be as exciting an adventure for your coordinators! Ask nicely,
and we will do our best to get answers.

SUN VALLEY IDAHO
February 22 - March 2
For those of you going to Sun Valley, here are the "Sun Valley Insider Tips from The New York Times."
BEST MORNING RUN If workers have groomed Lime
Light which they do about once a week, be at the Challenger Lift by 8:45 a.m. to
get first tracks down the 3,100-foot black-to-blue-to-green run. If not, take
the same lift, but drop down Ridge, a green run, to the Christmas Lift.
BEST AFTERNOON RUN By noon your legs will be simmering in lactic acid, so give them a break on Upper and Lower College, green runs off the Sunnyside Lift, which is sunny indeed.
INSIDER’S TIP After your first run, ride the
Challenger Lift up to the Lookout triple chair, where you can drop into Bald
Mountain’s bowls of go-where-you-please blue-and-black runs. On windy days head
for the protected blue runs off Frenchman’s Lift, where you’ll find quiet lines
through the trees.
DINING : Breakfast On powder days
Perry’s Restaurant (208-726-7703) on Fourth Street in Ketchum fills with
skiers looking for a quick meal of Southwestern breakfast wraps stuffed with
eggs and green chili ($5.50). No first tracks? Sit down for a full breakfast of
chicken-apple sausage, eggs and homemade sourdough toast ($10).
On-Mountain Dining
The Roundhouse opened in 1939 as Sun Valley’s first day lodge, and remains
the only on-mountain restaurant with sit-down service. Get a table next to the
four-sided fireplace and warm up over a pot of fondue ($12.50). Open for lunch
only in the winter season.
Low-End In-Town Dining
Apple’s Bar & Grill (208-726-7067) on Picabo Street — yes, the Olympian
learned to ski at Sun Valley — sits at the base of 9,150-foot Bald Mountain and
within eyeshot of the slopes. Count on juicy burgers, wraps, salads ($8 to $10)
and six beers on tap ($3 to $5).
High-End In-Town
Dining (OUR GROUP HAS ALREADY BOOKED THIS ACTIVITY!!) Bundle up in a
blanket for a 30-minute horse-drawn sleigh ride from the Sun Valley Inn to the
Trail Creek Cabin (208-622-2800 for dinner reservations only; 208-622-2135 for
sleigh ride and dinner reservations), a cozy stone-and-wood restaurant.
Trail Creek Cabin serves family-style sides of butternut squash soup with
entrees like baked Idaho ruby-red trout with herbs and lamb osso buco
NIGHT LIFE Après-Ski:
Sun Valley’s night life seems to unfold in stages, as if an almost orchestrated
crowd hits the bars in a particular order. Start early at Grumpy’s (860 Warm
Springs Road, Ketchum; no phone) for 32-ounce beers in goblets so big they’re
called schooners . Après Après-Ski: The
Cellar Pub (400 Sun Valley Road, Ketchum; 208-622-3832) is a midway stop on the
Sun Valley pub crawl that seems to unfold en masse regularly during ski season.
Shoot pool or refuel on fish and chips. The crowd always ends up at the Casino
Club (220 North Main Street, Ketchum; 208-726-9901), where bartenders put up
boards at last call to protect the booze.
