PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

First, I'd like to extend a welcome to new Club members Melissa Barkan, Bill Burns, the Maeda Family (all five of 'em), and Jack and May Tyrell.  Sorry for the delay in acknowledging your membership:  We are staffed by volunteers, some of whom have real jobs, and the mailbox doesn't get checked as often as it would were the situation otherwise.  As you can see, you are now on our mailing list and should be getting this Newsletter the last week of most months of the year.  This Newsletter is also posted on our website, www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com .

Second, for all of you who went on the trip, all fifty-six of you, what did you think?  I missed the last three trips for reasons that most of you know and missed a few trips back in the early 90s, but from what I can remember since the start of my Ski Club membership back in the early 80s, this has to be close to the best, if not The Best, in terms of snow quality, access to the lifts (walk up a few flights of stairs/ski in), and hotel amenities (indoor/outdoor pool, indoor/outdoor hot tubs, bar with free pupus every day, free breakfast buffet every morning, and hotel staff that treated us like the "honored guests" that we were (forgive my hubris).    Also, weren't those hotel toilets something else?  If you want more stories about the trip (and an explanation for the toilet remark), come to the Post Trip party/February General Membership Meeting this coming Sunday, a few short days from now, at the Wahonua condominium near Ala Moana Center.  This will also be an opportunity for you to learn more about the three potential locations for next year's trip as voted upon by trip participants at the Farewell Dinner:  Those locations are Banff/Lake Louise, Mammoth, and Whistler/Blackcomb.

Scheduling of social/recreational activities might be a little on the slim side these next couple of months due to additional ski trips taken by some of our membership, including our Board, but we should be back in the swing of things by the end of "Spring Break."  Board elections will be coming up at the April meeting so watch for our call for nominations and, if you are interesting in serving, get in touch with Jonathan jonathan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com  .

Finally, we WILL have a regular General Membership Meeting in March at a convenient location, but we don't know just where yet.  If you have a suggestion for a place that is as conveniently located as was Irons, with good parking, reasonably priced food and drinks, and the ability to house us all together in a corner with reasonable acoustics, let me know pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com

Hope to see you on Sunday.

A hui hou kakou,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

POST TRIP PARTY
and

FEBRUARY GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Waihonua at Kewalo
1189 Waimanu Street (at the end of Pensacola Street)
6th Floor Recreation Deck
Tel 380-3116
January 29 (Sunday) 5:00 P.M.

First our Saturday, January 21 Post Ski Trip Party got "washed out" by the H1/Kalanianaole Highway water main break.   Then, our upcoming February General Membership Meeting, normally on the first Thursday of the month, became homeless when a call to make reservations revealed that Irons had closed down.  A quick roll with the punches has landed us at Gaye Dickey's condo, near Ala Moana Center, where we will be combining both activities this coming Sunday afternoon/early evening.  Just like plans for the originally scheduled Post Trip Party, this is pot luck and BYOB.  Bring a suit and towel if you want to use the pool.

Gaye's building is right on Waimanu St. at the end of Pensacola where you would normally take a left to cross over Piikoi St. and go up the ramp to Ala Moana Center.  When you come to the intersection of Pensacola and Waimanu, it is the blue and white building directly in front of you.  You will want to unload your passenger(s) with your food and drink items at the loading/unloading area, where there should be a security guard on hand, before you look for parking.  There should be some free on-street parking available as this is Sunday.  If not, there should be plenty of parking available at Ala Moana Shopping Center or Ward Village (Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx, and Pier I):  You would not want to be seen leaving these parking areas with "going-to-a-party" items (coolers, etc.), suggesting that you're not a shopper.

AUGUST PAU HANA AT RUMFIRE
ON THE BEACH AT THE SHERATON WAIKIKI
2255 KALAKAUA AVE.

(Validated parking in Sheraton Parking structure)
February 24 (Friday) 4:30 P.M.

The club was last at Rumfire for a Pau Hana eight and a half years ago.  Why am I so sure of that?  We were there in August during the NFL preseason, and a few of us were glued to one of the TVs watching Colt Brennan, rookie quarterback sensation with the Washington Redskins, pass for several TDs in a preseason game.  Yes, he was actually hot in the preseason and, as I recall, had one of the best records in the nation among rookie quarterbacks:  It's a shame what befell him.

The description of Rumfire eight years ago told us:

"RumFire is the hottest new place on Waikiki beach, offering an ambiance - and menu - unlike any other, as well as some of the best views of Diamond Head and that famous beach.

“Because we have a full menu it’s like a restaurant - but it’s not a restaurant and it’s really not a bar,” says restaurateur Sanders. “It’s difficult to put your arms around, but it’s more about the experience. It’s a place you can come off the beach and have a great snack, to coming in and having happy hour with your friends or just watching the sunset, to getting very hip at night.  It’s not just a bar, lounge or a nightclub or a restaurant.  It’s all of that, depending on the time of day.”

“Private fire pits adorn the stylish outdoor lounge sections, perfect for cozying up with that special someone or socializing with colleagues and friends. The flame-carved fire pits are just one of the well-thought-out elements that create a relaxed, upscale, and warm atmosphere, with a view that simply can’t be beat. With ceiling-high glass windows that slide open to let in the ocean breeze, RumFire lets in all the beauty of a Waikiki beachfront setting.”

I can't imagine the above description not holding today.

See you there unless I am off skiing at the time---which is a distinct possibility.
