PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
How'd ya all like the Christmas party this year? I was so busy making announcements and running the gift exchange that I forgot to count how many of you were there, but it seemed like a lot. I even forgot to take my own gift home. For those who weren't there, the gift exchange, as usual, had it's moments. Some people brought wine, some people brought other things, but it seemed like only the wine was stolen, and stolen, and stolen and stolen. What a bunch of winos we must be! At the party, which also served as the December General Membership Meeting, we also approved the amendments to the by-laws by a unanimous vote of the members present----which I mention here so, sans minutes, we have a written record of it.
By the way, if anyone took home a pair of tongs from the Christmas Party with a "G" taped to the inside, they belong to Gail Yuen. Contact me, pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , or Anita, anita@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , and we'll figure out a way to return them.
The ski season has begun and Geof gets the prize for first tracks. He spent the week before the Christmas party at Mammoth (where else?) and reports the snow to have been a bit on the heavy side, water content-wise, but that the cold temperatures kept it in pretty good condition. Currently, per "On the Snow," Big Sky is reporting a 41 inch base, Whistler a 38" base, Beaver Creek, a 31 inch base, Aspen/Snowmass a 40" inch base, and Alta, a 65" base. My website for Japan skiing has Niseko at 35 inches and Rustusu at 27: I would think they would have more already, but I don't have another source to check. Pray for snow. It's still early.
As you can see from just under the masthead, the Newsletter is going on vacation for a while. The Club will be off to the snow for parts of January and February, and I will be in Utah from January 30 to March 11. We, however WILL be having a Post Hawaii Ski Week/Pre Japan Trips party on February 1 and a General Membership Meeting on March 5 (sans myself). Also, we will be having our Annual Board Election at the April General Membership Meeting. If you are interested in serving on the Board, please get in touch with Jonathan, jonathan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com . We will only be accepting nominations up until March 2, one month prior to the April meeting. The Club only works (ski trips, volunteer activities, social activities, etc.) to the extent that volunteers are willing to put in some time every month to make it work.

Our Packet Pickup Party for Hawaii Ski Week,
2020, which will also serve as the Club's January General Membership Meeting
(everyone is invited whether or not you are going on the trip) will be held at
the home of Judy Sobin and Jeff Lilley in Hawaii Kai. The Trip Committee
will provide the main course, but please bring a Pupu or dessert to share and
BYOB. Also, if you are not going on this trip but would like to nominate a
ski area for our 2021 trip, you can bring your nomination to the party.
Please write it up covering such points as size of area, altitude, percentage of
novice/intermediate/advanced trails, amenities at base area, convenience of
transportation, and a statement as to why you think it would be a good place for
our club. You can also email your nomination, covering these and other
points you think relevant, to Alan,
alan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com . As we will be considering the nominations at
our Farewell Dinner, we need to get them, from "non trippers," before we leave.
Those who are going on the trip can wait for the Farewell Dinner to present
them, but make sure you write them up. Also, for those of you who want
to buy club shirts, Caroline will be at the party: Bring your Kala. To get to
Judy's and Jeff's house at 748 Kalanipuu St., turn off Kalanianaole Highway onto
Lunalillo home Road and drive approximately 1.8 miles (about .41 past the
Esplanade where we had our Christmas party) where you will find Kalanipuu St. on
the left. Drive down Kalanipuu St. .29 miles and you'll see the house on

POST HAWAII SKI WEEK AND PRE JAPAN
TRIPS PARTY/GENERAL MEMBERHIP MEETING

Mucho Mahalos to Sam for coming through again and booking the recreation area at the Esplanade for our Post Hawaii Ski Week and Pre Japan Trips parties on Saturday, February 1. Come share your stories of Big Sky and/or receive your last minute information on Rusutsu and Niseko. As with the Pre Trips party on January 4, the main course will be provided, but you are asked to bring a pupu or dessert item to share. Also, as always, beverages are BYOB. To get to the Esplanade, turn left off Kalanianaole Highway at Lunalillo Home Road, the last traffic light before the highway goes up the hill towards Hanauma Bay. Drive in the mountain direction approximately .6 of a mile and look for the looming white building complex on the left. While parking is limited at the building (eleven guest stalls in the circle at the entrance) there is normally plenty of street parking available on the other side of the street and on side streets off the other side. The recreation area is right on the ground level beside the lobby.

18 ski club members (16 members, plus Nancy Rawlins' nephew, a photographer by profession, and his girlfriend from Maui, who starts another degree at UHM's school of architecture in January-- Go Bows!) volunteered at the Salvation's Army annual Thanksgiving dinner at Blaisdell Center to feed the less fortunate of our community. What a wonderful experience it was to know that you started your day by volunteering to help others! In case you did not check photos on the HSC Facebook page, posted are some fun and unique photos of our group at the pre-volunteer potluck brunch outside near the fish pond and numerous photos inside the exhibition hall, including one of us standing along side another volunteer, Hawaii LtGov and Dr. Josh Green. I "tagged" him in the photo and in response he ( or more likely his staff) emailed me the comments he posted on our FB website. Check out all the photos (esp. the fun ones created by Nancy Rawlins' nephew, Joseph, who works on Hawaii-50 and was a true delight!!). Malia also posted real-time photos of this event on her FB page.

SKI NISEKO - HOKKAIDO, JAPAN
February 8-16, 2020
Niseko is the arguably one of the top ski resorts in Japan and is located in the
northern island of Hokkaido, about a two hour shuttle bus trip from Sapporo. It
receives a yearly average of 45 ft. of dry powder with abundant tree skiing. The
mountain is divided into four ski areas serviced by 3 gondolas and 30 additional lifts
and the terrain is approximately 30% beginner, 40% intermediate and 30%
advanced. We will be staying in Grand Hirafu, the largest of the four ski areas.
There are a number of shops and restaurants within easy walking distance from
our hotel. Package cost for airfare is $1,000 economy nonstop on
Hawaiian Airlines to Sapporo. Land package includes 7 nights hotel
with buffet breakfast, round-trip shuttle bus from airport to hotel, and 6 days
lift tickets with cost ranging from $1590-$1912 based upon twin occupancy and
room type. Airfare upgrades and single supplements for hotel are available
