PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
How do you like this cooler weather we've been having in Hawaii Nei? Been wearing those long sleeve tee shirts in the early mornings and evenings to keep comfortable? I have, and I'm sure that it's just nature getting me ready for the real cold we'll be feeling in Montana just one month from now. I'm also trying to keep a regular schedule at the Nuuanu "Y," using weight machines, stretching, and doing aerobic workouts to make sure that skiing six or more hours per day doesn't shock my system when I get up there. Hope you're all doing something similar.
I was looking through old newsletters to get a better handle on what we've been up to this past year and noticed that we haven't been scheduling as many physical activities as in the past when we were periodically hiking and biking. For a couple of years, I, and then Susan (Murata) were the hike leaders, and Kevin (Okawa) was, the instigator of Ski Club biking adventures, but an (ski) injury got the best of me, and the vagaries of life, I would imagine, got the best of Susan and Kevin. Thank you, again, Geof (Chu) , for re-scheduling the paddle out to the Mokuluas in August after the earlier attempt fell apart (I discovered muscles I never knew I had). If anyone wants to step up and schedule something for the Club in the future, please let me know (but wait for after the ski trips are pau).
As 2011 winds to a close, I would like to thank our Board and other members whose contributions have made the club year tick. Mahalo to Kevin (Okawa) for keeping the tee shirts going, to Geof (Chu) for keeping our finances in order, to Wayne (Fujihara) for "honchoing" our 4th of July celebration in Hawaii Kai, to Roy (Manzoku) for the well attended volunteer "house painting" at the Palolo Chinese Home and his ongoing efforts to get our volunteering efforts back on track, to Susan (Murata) and Doug (Kazama) for making their community association recreation room in the rarified air of Wai'alae Nui available to us, to Momi (Kleinschmidt) for keeping everything, especially me, on track at activities that require ongoing logistics, to new member Sandy Herron for coming out of nowhere to suggest and set up a very successful Sunday afternoon in the country to watch a polo match, and Mahalos aplenty to Susan (Murata) and her Trip Committee of Kevin (Okawa), Geof (Chu), Anita (Hodges) and Debbie (Fujihara), for their ongoing, tireless efforts to make our ski trips happen. My apologies to anyone and anything I inadvertently omitted.
See you at the upcoming General Meeting, the Pre Ski Week (Packet Pick-Up) Party, and on the slopes.
Pray for Snow!!!!
Aloha,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Sam Sneads Tavern
January 5
(Thursday) 6 P.M.
This is the first General Membership Meeting of the new calendar year and the last until after our 2102 ski trips. Although the meeting starts at 6 P.M., you'll want to arrive no later than 5:30 P.M. to take advantage of the "Sunset Dinner Specials."
PRE SKI WEEK PARTY
January 20 (Friday) 6 P.M.
All ski club members are invited to the Pre-Ski Week Party on January 20, 6:00 pm at Geof Chu's condominium complex, Aloha Towers Condominium, Diamond Head Tower, 2215 Aloha Drive. (a right hand turn off lewers on the Lewers block between Kuhio Avenue and Ala Wai Blvd.), Waikiki. Please note that Lewers is one way going Mauka. There are limited parking stalls in the building and across the street in the Ewa Tower at 430 Lewers (where Geof actually lives) with all guest parking clearly marked. Call 330-7432 once you have parked so that someone can let you in the building and show you where to register your car. Inasmuch as there are not enough stalls in the two buildings for all expected, there are also 43 parking spaces available in a nearby lot for which we can issue you a permit, via email, once you have RSPVed (see below).
The Party will be at the pool area on the third floor. Ski Club members who will be attending this party will be able to pick up their packet of information for Big Sky including calendar of events, awesome name tag designed by Kevin Okawa, streamers that you can tie to your ski poles (skiers) or to your helmet or jacket (snowboarders), and other pertinent information for the week at Big Sky. Use the name tag to get a discount at the ski rental shop (more information will be provided later) and your lift tickets will be distributed at Big Sky at the Welcome Wine and Cheese Reception on Saturday, January 28. Food will be provided but please bring a small dessert to share with others and, as usual, bring your own drinks. Please RSVP to Toby pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com so that we will know how much food to provide and so that we can send you directions and a permit for the nearby lot.

SKI TRIPS FOR 2012
BIG SKY HAWAII SKI WEEK
In less than one month, 66 Hawaii Ski Club members will be
enjoying the powder and steeps of Big Sky and Moonlight Basin. After the busy
holiday season, Ski Week 2012 will be much anticipated!!!”
Big Sky Ski
Resort opened for skiing and boarding Thanksgiving weekend. For the latest photos
and videos of Big Sky, click on

Ski Magazine rates Big Sky as tops for uncrowded liftlines and slopes: “By itself, Big Sky hosts some of the best skiing in America: long, jet way groomers; the hollow-stomach steeps of Lone Peak; wrap-around mountain scenery that induces neck strain; and cotton-candy powder that lasts for days. But with the Lone Peak Pass, including adjoining Moonlight Basin and its stunning North Summit Snowfields and Headwaters Bowl for 5,500 total acres, the place flat-out rules. ‘One of my favorite areas in the U.S.’ attests more than one reader. ‘Amazing terrain’ has always been Big Sky’s strong suit, and it just gets better with ongoing glading, regular lift improvements and ‘no liftlines—no crowds."
Your Trip Committee has been busy for months creating a memorable ski week. If you have not yet done so, you have until December 1st to sign up for snowmobiling or snow coaching in Yellowstone National Park (see form below). Scheduled Ski Week activities include a Welcome Reception, mountain orientation, pub crawl (led by former HSC president, Dave Broderdorf, because he and Amy Bosich, a former HSC trip coordinator, reside in the Big Sky six months each year), dinner at Buck’s T-4, snowmobiling, and the final awards and pizza party Friday evening. In addition there are numerous other Big Sky activities including a poker table and slot machines at Whiskey Jack’s, zip lining at 8000 ft, dog sledding, and cross-country skiing.
A full schedule of planned HSC activities will be included in your pre-ski week packet distributed at the PRE-SKI WEEK PARTY, FRIDAY, JANUARY 20TH AT GEOF CHU’S CONDO PARTY ROOM. All HSC members are invited to this pre-ski event. If you have not been working out, now is the time for pre-ski conditioning and stretching exercises. For suggested workouts, click on Ski Magazine at http://www.skinet.com/ski/fitness, http://www.newjerseyskicouncil.org/skiconditioningpreskiing.pdf, or google “pre-ski conditioning for a variety of options.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
POLO IN MOKULEIA
Mucho mahalos to Sandy Herron for inviting the Club to sit in the Members Only section for the polo match between two Hawaii teams at the Mokuleia polo field on Sunday, November 27th. Twenty-eight of us got to sit on a covered deck eating BYO pupus, sipping BYO wine and/or other appropriate beverages, and witness a sport which, for many of us, had only been seen in the movies or in television news bits. In a departure from the other two matches I had seen, there was an announcer giving play-by-play commentary, explaining the rules of the game, and supplying interesting tidbits about the sport and its history in Hawaii. Did you know that the game was played here on Oahu, in the late 1800s, before it arrived in the continental United States? Also, before it was forced by the City to move, the polo field was initially located in Kapiolani Park. Although it was a bit windier and cooler than would have been ideal, it was still relatively comfortable and the feared rain did not come. Although the majority of Ski Club members left shortly following the end of the match, a few of us stayed on to listen and sway to the sounds of local blues band, Downtown Charlie and the Humbones. A nice afternoon in the country. Thanks again, Sandy.

CHRISTMAS PARTY AT THE LARGE'S
On Saturday evening, December 17, thirty-five to forty Ski Club members and guests found their way, once again, to Darrell and Rheta Large's home on Spinnaker Isle in Hawaii Kai even though I, for at least the second year in a row, had given the house number, in my directions, as 585 rather than 583. Sorry guys! Fortunately, most of us recognized the house from previous years or used the distinctive "L" on the wrought iron gate as a clue, but former Ski Club member and Past President, K.C. Mueller, whom nobody had seen in years and pleasantly surprised us all by his appearance at the door, reported having searched for the correct address for a half hour: Sorry K.C. The food was "ono-licous," at least one of the boats in the Boat Parade was spectacular, Craig got all his fruitcake sold, and the grab bag gifting was about the funniest I've seen, A bottle of Chivas Regal changed hands, by my count, seven times and an electric cork puller, four. Judging by the number alcoholic gifts (scotch, wines, Baileys, and egg nog), we are, perhaps, a "drinking club with a skiing problem." Thank you, again, Darrell and Rheta, for having us at your home yet again and if you invite us back next year, I promise to finally get the address right.
