PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Sign up for SKI WEEK 2008.

The trip committee has FINALIZED the arrangements for Ski Week 2008 in Whistler. Take advantage lotteries for early sign up and payment. Since the voting for Whistler was overwhelming, I am looking forward to a well attended Ski Week.

As for the refund from PTB Travel for Ski Week 2007, the Board had a demand letter from an attorney sent to Obie. We hope Obie’s conscience gets the better of him and he will return our deposit. I am a firm believer in “what goes around comes around”.

We have a planned a variety of activities this summer starting with the Flavors of Honolulu and ending with our annual Pool Party on Labor Day Weekend. The Fourth of July will be held in Waikiki which will give us an opportunity to watch the fireworks from DeRussy beach and visit the newly renovated Lewers St./Beachwalk Neighborhood. We have also scheduled a bike ride to Ford Island and a Zoo Concert.

Hope to see the membership turn out for the scheduled events!

Aloha,

Geof

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

TASTE THE NEW “FLAVORS OF HONOLULU” ON JULY 1, 2007

VOLUNTEERS: As in the past, you should have received a letter from Flavors of Honolulu informing you of your shift assignment. Since Anita is in Europe until June 30, if there are email updates, either Toby or Wandi will forward the information to you.

OTHER CLUB MEMBERS: Please join Hawaii Ski Club volunteers for delicious food and drink, live entertainment, cooking demonstrations, and fun at FLAVORS of Honolulu on Sunday, July 1. Bring friends and family to enjoy a fun-filled day with lots of food from some of Honolulu's best restaurants.

Volunteers informally gather to eat, socialize, and enjoy the live entertainment. Other Ski Club members are invited to join the volunteers to relax and enjoy the festivities. This informal group will meet near Skygate, the modernistic, big black sculpture in the middle of the Fasi Civic Center grounds at 3:30PM –

4: 00 PM and then proceed to the music stage area.

Bring a cell phone if you want to locate other ski club members in the crowd. Friends and family are invited to join us. Come to party and support the Flavors of Honolulu and Abilities Unlimited.

4th OF JULY IN WAIKIKI

Our President, Geoff Chu, has generously offered us the use of his Waikiki condominium as a “staging area” to eat pupu, drink, and socialize on July 4th prior to the annual, spectacular fireworks display at Ala Moana. From Geoff’s condo, it is a relatively short walk to the beach where we should be able to view the display away from the maddening crowds which throng to Ala Moana Beach Park and Ala Moana Center for the event. Those who wish can also try out some of the new eateries and browse the new stores in the recently completed development along Beachwalk on their way to or from the fireworks. Geoff’s Condo is located at 430 Lewers, apartment 30 C, telephone: 921-9945. The building is on the block of Lewers St. between Kuhio Avenue and Ala Moana Blvd. and has the first driveway/parking entrance after crossing or making the turn from Kuhio. Look for a tan colored building with the address (430 Lewers St.) on a brown sign tacked to the wall. There are 11 guest stalls available at 430 Lewers and in the building (with auto entrance) directly across the street which is also part of the complex. Additionally, there might be free (because of the holiday) street parking available on adjoining Aloha St. or elsewhere in the vicinity. Register your vehicle/parking stall in the lobby, ring up Geoff’s unit (using his telephone number above), and we will buzz you in. Bring something to drink, pupu to share, and celebrate the 4th of July with your ski club friends. Call Toby at 224-1065 if you have any questions or need additional directions.

PAU HANA AT COMPRADES,
JULY 20, 2007

Senors y Senoritas. Come to Compadres, Honolulu’s favorite Mexican restaurant and watering hole, at the Ward Center at 5 p.m. on July 20th for magaritas, cervezas, chips, nachos, and ski club camaraderie. Try to come early so that we can “commandeer” some adjoining tables on the outside deck. Free Parking is available in the multi-level lot at the Ward Center, at Ward Warehouse, especially in the lot in front of the theaters and, we’re told, is “legal” after 5 p.m. on the Auahi St. side, e.g. the back, of the IBM building. Come relax and be happy mi amigos. “Ole’.”

WHISTLER SKI TRIP, THE HIGHLIGHT OF OUR CLUB YEAR – January ‘08

KAWAINUI MARSH HIKE

It was a day when you knew you were "Lucky you live Hawaii"! From Kawainui Marsh to Kalama Beach to a delightful Pinky's Broiler. Oh, wait......it all started with Wandi's gifts to us for wearing club shirts. Mine was a cloisonne bead bracelet! Whoa!

Overcrowded papyrus and cattails made gorgeous color patterns along the dyke path. Sharp-eyed hikers spotted turtles. Sam Wright identified night herons, moor hens, cattle egrets, mallards, and tiny zebra finches. Baby ducks swam in the canal and were collected and herded onto the shore by their protective mother.

Craig had a ride for us back to our cars, but we all chose to walk back, not yet ready to leave the marsh. Jo Yee and I went home with cattail plants.

Pinky's Broiler was the right spot to end the day. Thanks, Craig, for arranging a wonderful outing.

IMPORTANT: PASSPORT RENEWALS

If you will be joining us on the January ski trip to Whistler or plan on traveling outside the USA within the next 6-12 months, apply as early as possible for either new or renewed passports since some countries, including Canada, require that a U.S. passport be valid for six months after a planned stay.

Travelers face the prospect of lines at local post offices and regional processing centers and should allow 10 to 12 weeks to receive a routine passport vs. an earlier standard of four to six weeks. Those who are willing to pay an extra $60 can expect to receive an expedited version in three to four weeks(up from 1-2 weeks)

Currently all Americans must carry passports when returning by AIR from another country, including Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

As early as January 2008, the regulations will be expanded to cover foreign travel by car or cruise ship. Processing delays stemming from the boost in demand have forced some travelers to postpone or cancel trips. Remember our trip is January 2008, so even if you drive over the Canadian border, you may have to have a US passport by then.
