PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Since writing the article below on the Kipapa Elementary School painting project, I have received a "thank-you" email from the vice principal of the school:  We are the "best" volunteer painters they have ever had in terms of quality (and, I would guess, quantity).  We had more members show up for this activity than often come to a Pau Hana.  Maybe we should rename ourselves the "Hawaii Ski and Painting Club." (Heh, Heh!!)  In any case, this is the second well attended volunteer painting project (the first being The Palolo Chinese Home) we have had in the past year, thanks to Board Member Roy Manzoku, and I look forward to more in the future:  It was an enjoyable, healthy, and fulfilling way to spend a Saturday morning, not to mention the opportunity for fellowship with some members whom I haven't regularly seen at our other activities.

Talking about "other activities," as of a week ago, Sandy had not received many reservations for the Polo Match on June 24th (article below), and I hope this changes.  I know it was free last year, but the Polo Club has put some effort into making the VIP Section more comfortable,  $15.00 is not a lot of money considering the novelty and excitement of the "Sport of Kings," and the drive "up country" is also something most of us don't do every day.

And, talking about "novelties," the changes at Sam Sneads, now Seven Palms Bar and Grill, should be interesting on June 7th.  Hope to see many of you there.

Aloha,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Seven Palms Bar and Grill
57 Arizona Memorial Road
June 7 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.

Our trusty "home" for General Membership Meetings, Sam Sneads, which we thought was only being closed for renovations, has been re-named "Seven Palms Bar and Grill: Same ownership, but we don't know about the menu or whether they will continue to have the Sunset Special dinners up until 5:30.  I'll be getting there before 5:30 in the hope that they will.  Our Trip Committee may have more details on next year's Hawaii Ski Week in Japan at that time.  See you there.

PAU HANA AT RYAN'S GRILL
June
15 (Friday), 4:30 P.M.

Since we didn't have a Pau Hana in May, we are scheduling one for the "hump week" Friday rather than the last Friday of June.  We are returning to Ryan's Grill on the second level of Ward Center, just opposite the escalator from ground level.   If you are lucky enough to find a good parking spot in the adjoining, street-side garage, you can just walk across.   For those of you who might be unfamiliar with Ryan's, it has a humongous beer selection, drinks of all kinds, pretty decent pupus, and has been a favorite Pau Hana location of the downtown crowd (think "Yuppie") for many years.   I'll try to score a table to the left of the entrance, and, hopefully, we can add as the crowd grows.  If you don't see us there, look on the lanai to the far left (behind the bar).   Anybody who can get there by 4:30, to help me claim "squatters rights" to an appropriately sized table, is more than welcome.

From Waikiki or the airport, take the H-1 West, then H-2 North toward Mililani and Wahiawa. When H-2 ends, keep going straight past Schofield Barracks on the left, down the hill and across a bridge. Keep left towards Waialua and Dillingham Ranch. From here you'll drive about 20 minutes along a two lane highway with mostly fields on both side. When you come to the traffic circle, continue through it and go under the bridge towards Mokuleia. Drive about three miles, and the polo field will be on your right side.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITES:

PAU HANA AT THE KOKO MARINA PUB
Friday, April 27

It was a beautiful view: The late afternoon sun reflecting off the mild chop of the marina; the boats at the dock swaying lazily with the breeze; the varied peaks of the Koolaus framed by the sky,  partially obscured by wisps of cloud, or completely enveloped and hidden from view by darker clouds coming in from the North. This was the scene enjoyed by the four of us having the good sense to sit on the inside of the Hawaii Ski Club table: Those on the other side had only a view of a panel divider, the ceiling, or our stupid grins while enjoying the view.  All kidding aside, the view and overall ambiance was great, the food fine, and the Club conversation as energizing as ever.  Also, Anita had her pictures of Viet Nam to share.  The late afternoon traffic to Hawaii Kai wasn't that bad either:  You never know!!!!

KIPAPA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PAINTING PROJECT
Saturday, May 5

Fourteen Ski Club members, non union painters all,  showed up at the Kipapa Elementary School early Saturday morning to paint the exteriors of several buildings in the complex.  The School supplied the paint, brushes, and rollers:  We supplied the labor and good cheer, completing a lot more in three hours of work than the school had expected.  We then took ourselves over to the Mililani Town Center for lunch and, for some of us, an early start to Cinco De Mayo at Just Tacos.  Roy, who organized the volunteer project and reserved the lanai area at Just Tacos, still claims that the choice of a Mexican bar and restaurant for lunch on May 5 was just a coincidence:  I don't know 'bout that.
