PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

As you can see, we are back at Ruby Tuesday next week for our June Meeting.  Two Tides at Whole Foods in Kakaako, while it had looked very promising, didn't quite "fill the bill:" Great for a Pau Hana but not for a meeting.   If you know of a centrally located venue with reasonably priced food and drinks, a reasonably quiet corner to hold a meeting, and good parking, don't be shy about letting us know.   The search continues.

When was the last time you checked out the website?  The group photos from last year's ski trips and pictures of our new club tee shirts have been posted.  Also, the Tips page has been updated and all the links, at least for now, work.  We have added links to ongoing snow reports (including Japan) and trail maps.  Finding items for the Tips page that really provide useful information, rather than information as a pretext for advertising, can be time consuming.   If you have any suggestions for items we should include, please let me know.

I am repeatedly gratified by the turnout at our volunteer activities, and the Special Olympics this past Saturday morning was no exception.   Unfortunately, about half our complement went home when they arrived a bit late, probably due to some combination of unfamiliarity with the new venue and confusing parking, and they chose to leave after finding that they would not be assigned as a group but, instead, sent to separate locations as needed.  With a surplus of volunteers, Special Olympics staff had already assigned others to Healthy Athletes.  Hopefully, this will not happen again as Special Olympics has been one of our more popular repeating volunteer activities.

Plans for Hawaii Ski Week are just about set, registration information will be going our shortly, and, hopefully, Alan will be at next week's General Membership Meeting to discuss them and answer questions.

See you at the meetings and activities.

A hui hou kakou,

TOBY

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

PAU HANA AT TWO TIDES RESTAURANT AND BAR
(Upstairs from Whole Foods )
388 kamakee St.
May 17 (Friday)

On relatively short notice, we had a total of nineteen Ski Club members show up (though not all at the same time) at Two Tides on May 17 for healthful pupus and drinks.    The parking in the adjoining structure was great, and I was able to park on the second floor just a few steps away from the door (which paid off towards when I thought I had lost my phone, ran out to my car to find it on the floor, and got back in record time). You could either order pupus and drinks at the bar or bring a takeout dinner from the first floor up to the bar's lanai, and we did both.  The food was generally good, the craft brews on tap delicious, and the excellent turnout a testament to the location.  The service, however, for some of us, was a bit slow, and the ambient noise from the street below and other customers a bit much.  It was a convenient place for a pau hana but not, I think, and most Board Members there agreed, a place to try and hold a meeting.   Therefore, although we had considered moving our monthly General Membership Meetings to Two Tides, we will be back to Ruby Tuesday in Moanalua for our upcoming June meeting.

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
SPECIAL OLYMPICS
Iolani school
563 Kamoku St.
May 25 (Saturday) 7:30 A.M. - 1:00 P.M.

The new location with several designated parking areas for volunteers proved a bit confusing to some of the Club who had signed up for the morning, and only six of us ultimately went to work in the Healthy Athletes venue at 7:30 A.M.   By the time the rest appeared, Special Olympics staff had filled out the complement necessary for Healthy Athletes with other volunteers and wanted to individually assign our members to other stations rather than keep the group together:  They chose to go home instead.  Those of us who in Healthy Athletes spent the morning registering the competitors for health screenings and policed footware, making sure the athletes and chaperones removed their shoes or dawned booties to protect the floor of the room.   Overall, there were more volunteers than necessary, the work was relatively easy, it was all for a very good cause, and we were provided with a healthy lunch (I skipped dinner) and a tee shirt.  Hopefully, next year, we will back at the more familiar  University of Hawaii with "unitary" parking arrangements in the structure opposite the athletic complex,  and our full complement will stay pretty much together.
