CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

Every Monday evening (except on holidays and, of course, during Hawaii Ski Week), at 4:30 P.M., a group of ski club members and their friends play tennis at Keehi Lagoon Courts, off  Lagoon Drive.  Stay in shape and enjoy a "careful social hour" afterwards.

Sunday, June 13, 2021, 9 AM:  Hike on upper Tantalus.  See below for details on hike and RSVP.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Today's (5-26-21) news that, very possibly within the next month, all trans pacific travelers, if vaccinated in Hawaii, may need no more than their proof of vaccination to re-enter Hawaii is exciting to say the least.  Could you imagine returning from Aspen this coming year and having to quarantine because you flew out of Aspen where there was no Hawaii approved testing site?   While we expected that things would certainly ease up by the time of  Hawaii Ski Week 2022, it is heartening to see it happening (we hope) in the very near future.   Alan tells me that the signup form for Snowmass-Aspen will probably be coming out pretty soon so be on the lookout for it.

Also good news is that we may be moving to Tier 4, which would permit gatherings of up to 25 people outdoors, and if we can increase beyond that by September, we could hold our traditional membership year Kickoff Meeting.  Although the 2021-2022 membership year will be free for most of you, we might still hold the Kickoff if we can:  Grand excuse for a party.

We would have had 8 on last month's hike in Moanalua Valley (see below) if Geof had found a parking spot but, still, 7 out of a possible 10 isn't bad. Maybe we'll reach 10 for the upcoming Tantalus hike on June 13.

A hui hou kakou and stay safe out there,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

TANTALUS HIKE
KALAWAHINE TRAIL>PAUOA FLATS TRAIL>NUUANU OVERLOOK
Sunday, June 13, 9 AM

This hike will take us from Tantalus Drive, about 1/2 mile before the top, to Pauoa Flats in the back of Tantalus and will end at an overlook of the reservoir and upper Nuuanu Valley.  This is a relatively easy hike, but not a "walk in the park" like April's hike into Moanalua:  There will be lots of roots to walk over, especially at the end, and it might be a bit muddy in sections.   The trailhead (Kalawahine Trail) is about 1/2 mile before the top on the Tantalus Drive side.  Driving up Tantalus Drive, at a point where the road briefly levels off and curves to the right shortly after a bridge, you will see, straight ahead, before making the turn into the curve,  a steep concrete road with a chain across it:  This is the trailhead.   There might be room for about 3 cars right after the curve on the right hand side, and there is usually space for several cars to nudge off the road on the left side for which you would have to drive a little further up, turn around, and come back.  There is also space in a turnoff just before the bridge.   I will plan to be at the trailhead by 8:30 A.M. watching for you and trying to be conspicuous.    If you wish to come, please email me, pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com, no later than Wednesday, June 9 and give me your cell number so I can text you in case there is a last minute rain cancellation.   Although larger outdoor gatherings are expected to be permitted by the time of the hike, due to logistics concerns, it will be limited to the first ten who sign up.  Additionally, although masks are no longer required for outdoor gatherings, please bring them as you never know whom you may be coming close to on the trail.  Finally, on the way up, on Tantalus Drive, be very aware of potholes:  Had plenty 3 weeks ago.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

MOANALUA VALLEY HIKE
SUNDAY, APRIL 25

On Sunday, April 25, seven of us made the trek into Moanalua Valley for a little exercise and to view some island history.   We would have had eight if Geof had found a parking spot for his truck.   Princess Pauahi had gifted the Apauaha containing Moanalua Valley (and Moanalua Gardens) to Samuel Damon, and, at some point in the very early 1900s, his son, Douglas, built a house with a swimming pool and, as I have heard, a hot tub.  All that remains are concrete stairs leading up to a concrete platform, a coal oven, and trails leading up to what were probably other levels, the swimming pool, and the hot tub:  Although the jungle has taken over,  the site definitely piques the imagination as does the seven stone bridges over which horse drawn coaches used to travel.   After two miles with the bridges and a rock with Hawaiian petroglyphs, the walk turned into more of a hike along a Hawaiian Electric service road, and we turned around at the point where a real trail, the back route to the top of the Haiku stairs,  begins.  I have done this many times (the valley, not the hike to Haiku Stairs),  and this, lucky for us, was the driest it's ever been.

AROUND THE WORLD:

From the
NEWS FLASH
FAR WEST SKI ASSOCIATION
MAY, 2021

ALTERRA PLANS MILLIONS OF CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS: The Alterra Mountain Company plans to invest $207 million in capital improvements, including $111 million in resort projects at Steamboat, Deer Valley, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, and Mammoth Mountain; $31 million in enterprise technology systems; and $65 million in resort maintenance and planning. Pending local government review and approval, Deer Valley plans include: Snow Park Lodge and base area to undergo a complete revision, providing additional accommodations and skier services, new contemporary food and beverage and après options, and an additional ski beach. Squaw Valley Alpine: The highly anticipated Base-to-Base Gondola (B2B) will begin construction this summer. It will provide a connection between the Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows bases—currently a seven-mile drive. Mammoth Mountain: The multi-year Main Lodge redevelopment will create the “Base Camp to the Eastern Sierra,” with a new ski beach, state-of-the-art services, Adventure Concierge Center, an array of boutique dining and retail experiences, luxury lodging and a variety of residential ownership options, complete with club amenities and programming. This plan is in the permitting phase and scheduled to begin construction in spring 2023. Steamboat will begin a three-year, $135 million base area redevelopment and on-mountain terrain expansion. Steamboat’s Gondola Square will be transformed into a multi-use plaza with additional dining and après, retail, entertainment, and year-round gathering places. A reimagined guest arrival experience will eliminate cumbersome stairs and provide easy access to the mountain. On-mountain improvements slated for the 2021-22 season—pending additional approvals—include an additional 650 acres of advanced/expert skiable terrain in Pioneer Ridge. Guest enhancement amenities are expected to be completed by the start of the 2022-23 winter season.

NEW MEGA RESORT, WITH YEAR-ROUND SKIING.
PLANNED FOR CANADA, B.C.

Hopefully, I'll be alive and still skiing when this comes to fruition.   With skiing 12 months a year in Canada,  it won't be necessary to fly down to South America, Australia, or New Zealand (I'll still want to go down to New Zealand: A Kiwi at heart) to catch the (our) summer snow.  Click on link for the story.
