PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

As we sat for breakfast at our table in the “Legends on the Hill” lodge at Boyne Mountain Resort, waiting for the sun to rise,  anticipating 36 holes of golf, the breaking daylight revealed the top of two double chairs, one on each side of the lodge.   I asked the waitress about the resort and the upcoming ski season.  As an avid Michigan skier, she boasted that the Boyne Resorts in Northern Michigan have the most vertical in the state.  Boyne Mountain Resort and Boyne Highlands Resort have "exhilarating" 500 and 550 vertical feet.  The weather forecast for the next three days was predicted to reach a high of 47° F, much better suited for spring skiing than golf.  I did mention to her upon leaving that Boyne also owns and operates the Big Sky/Moonlight Basin Resort and that there should be some reciprocity available to Boyne employees,  and,  as a member of the Hawaii Ski Club, it was one of our better trips.  We talked for a while,  and she left excited, saying she would definitely check into working in Montana for the upcoming season.  Strange that this local boy has traveled all over the Midwest and New England playing a lot of golf at resorts that turn into ski resorts in the winter.   However – YOU CAN’T BEAT THE ROCKIES FOR TERRAIN.

Loveland Ski Area, those lifts that you see off to the left before entering the Eisenhower Tunnel on your way to Summit County and other ski destinations in Colorado, has already opened for the season, other areas won't be far behind, and members, especially those that take other trips to the mountains, should think about getting in shape for the season.   Wanda is "possibly" planning a hike, albeit a short one, tagged on to the Lyon Arboretum tour and this could be a beginning for some.  Every year, during the major club trip, we hear complaints from some members that they are soooooo out of shape, and this could be the year to do something about it

After a successful Kick Off meeting earlier this month and the upcoming Halloween/Wine Bottling Party, we’re into Holiday Season already.  Our annual Pre-Thanksgiving and Christmas Parties are two of the better attended events of the year.

Hope to see you there.

One of our Board Members has resigned and we are seeking a member to “step up to the plate” and help with the planning, organizing and conducting Club business and events.  The term is through April 2010.

Aloha and mahalo,

GEOF

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:

WINE BOTTLING HALLOWEEN PARTY

October 31 (Friday, 7 - 9 P.M.)

Last year was so much fun we are doing it again!  We will have a combination wine bottling (one white, one red), costume party, and potluck/pupu party at “Wine, The Experience: 1016 Kapahulu Avenue Suite 1, Honolulu, HI 96816 - (808) 738-0738 - http://www.winetheexperience.com .   For the paltry fee of $10. 00,  everyone will receive a gourmet bottle of wine and compete for best costume prizes.  Afterwards, the adventurous will head to Waikiki for continued Halloween craziness that only happens once-a-year!

GENERAL MEETING

November 6, (Thursday, 5:30 P.M.)

As usual, our November General Meeting will be at Sam Snead's Club House, Navy-Marine Golf Course, Valkenburgh St. (across Nimitz Highway from the airport).  Unusual, however, the meeting will be inside the restaurant rather than out on the lanai as we have arranged for a Japan picture show.  Especially those going on the Japan trip won't want to miss this.

GUIDED TOUR OF LYON ABORETUM
November 8, (Saturday, 10 A.M.)

The recently reopened Lyon Arboretum has arranged a special Saturday guided tour for us. Lyon Arboretum is the only University botanical garden in the U.S. located in a tropical rainforest.  It consists of 200 acres at the top of the Manoa watershed.  The tour will take approximately 1˝ hours and will cost $5 per person. We are limited to 12 people, so get your name on the list early.  Contact Wanda (See "Contacts" link above).  Options are open for lunch afterwards.

Directions:
Coming from King Street (driving east): Turn left on Punahou St., past Punahou School, take the left fork (Manoa Road) and continue up the valley, staying on Manoa Road until it ends just beyond Paradise Park.  Entrance to the Lyon Arboretum is at the end of Manoa Road.

Coming from University Avenue: Drive up the valley (mauka) past the University of Hawai`i. University Ave. narrows at the top of the hill and turns into Oahu Ave. Continue mauka on Oahu Ave. At the five-way intersection, take Manoa Road, and follow it to the end, just beyond Paradise Park.  Our driveway is at the end of Manoa Road.

TRADITIONAL PRE-THANKSGIVING POTLUCK
November 15 (Saturday, 3:00 P.M)

What's there to be thankful for? Well, let's start with friends and great food at the annual Hawaii Ski Club pre-Thanksgiving dinner (aka "black turkey day".)   Keeping with tradition, this event is held at Rebecca Horne's and Bill Rothe's home in Ahuimanu.  Arrive at 3:00, and we'll be eating at 4:00, so don't be late!   A potluck sign-up will be circulated at the November general meeting. Bring along your favorite beverage.

Directions: Cross on your best route to the Windward side, and join up with Kahekili Highway.  Pass Windward Community College to Valley of the Temples.  At or after the first traffic light following the cemetery, turn left onto Hui Iwa St.   Continue toward the mountains to  Hui Kelu St. and take a left.  Hui Kelu first appears on your right, but you want to ignore this as it is a long loop road which eventually crosses over Hui Iwa further down where you will be making the turn onto it.  Follow Hui Kelu, approximately 1/2 mile it as it wraps around to 47-461 Hui Kelu.  Both Google Maps and Google Earth locate the house "dead on."    If lost, call 239-4332.

SERVING DINNER TO THE NEEDY ON THANKSGIVING DAY
November 27 (Thursday, 9:30 A.M.)

Helping the Salvation Army serve turkey dinners with all the trimmings is as much a part of our club as the annual Hawaii Ski Week. It's a time to wear our club shirts, reindeer antlers, and smiles, usually getting on the local TV news. You may see club members playing volleyball with inflated rubber gloves and just generally enjoying the festivities.

We start at 9:30 with a potluck breakfast tailgate near the parking decks, and end up consuming the left overs after our volunteering jobs are done. A sign-up will be circulated for the potluck.

The allotted 18 slots are full, but if you're around, stop by for the tailgate breakfast. Parking is free at the Blaisdell.

DECEMBER PAU HANA AT HALEIWA JOE'S-KANEOHE
December 5, (Friday, 4:30 P.M.)

Haliewa Joe’s-Kaneohe, 46-366 Haiku Road, is just a short ride via H-3 or Likelike Highway.  it is located on Haiku Road just off of Kahekili Highway about 1.1 miles upcountry from the Likelike/H3/Kahekili merge.  After making the left turn onto Haiku Rd.,  look for Haleiwa Joe's on the left.  Happy hour is from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM offering 1/3 off all pupus and discounted drinks.  They offer great foods, spirited people,  and fun all combined in a spectacular setting.  Dine outdoors overlooking the scenic Haiku Gardens and experience the Spirit of Aloha that has made Haleiwa Joe's famous.  Some say they serve best prime rib on the island for those interested in dinner.

PAST ACTIVITIES:

UPPER TANTALUS HIKE

Saturday, October 18

If you woke up with your ears unexplainably burning on Saturday Morning, October 18, it was because you were expected to show up for the hike but weren't there.   If you had been worried about the rain, it had already stopped prior to the start, much of the trail was dry (although almost as much was a little muddy), and the sun even started teasing us by occasionally peaking through the clouds as we made our way.   If you had tried to join us by coming up Round Top Drive, found the road blocked by a City maintenance crew (what timing!) and just went home, you should have just gone back to the bottom and come up on the Tantalus Drive side:  That's what Wanda did.   Three of us (yes!---only three), Wanda Sowell, Jonathan Carr, and your beleaguered hike leader got started one half hour late, enjoyed a pleasant "walk through the woods" (Some uphill, some downhill,  a lot of trail, and a little road), and were back at our cars in less than two hours, none the worse for wear except for mud on our shoes.   The rain started again, after we finished (what timing!).

TOBY

What a gorgeous morning on Tantalus.  With no withering sun, the night-blooming cereus were still awake, and the trail was lined with yellow ginger.  White mountain hibiscus with red stamens fell at our feet, as we put the "active" back in club activities!
