PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

As I sit here in front of the computer, my calendar says that it's the first day of Autumn.   A skiing acquaintance of mine, who lives in Vermont, mentioned to me that she is already receiving her ski magazines in the mail, and  her mouth is now watering (or icing up?) for winter and skiing.  Mine have not arrived yet, obviously bulk mail "prisoners" of the "slow boat to Hawaii."  "Lucky we live Hawaii," though, because we get to go play in the snow for a week (or two, or three-----) every winter and don't have to deal with it on a daily basis, shoveling out our cars in the morning, keeping a shovel, sand, and chains in the trunk for emergencies,  etc. (I remember those days).   Also, here, we get to go play in the great outdoors in the comfort of good weather right up until the time we get to go play in the snow.

Talking about "playing in the great outdoors,"  no promises, but don't be surprised if I don't announce a hike or two by email for some Saturday morning(s) between now and the ski trip---even if not scheduled via the Newsletter.   Due to my slower than expected recovery from knee surgery, I haven't done any hikes, like last year,  yet, but my knee seems to be holding up on basically level ground, and I may try some hills and trails pretty soon.  Also, if you want to coordinate a hike, bike, or some other activity, let me know, and we'll do it.   Ideas for activities don't need to come just from the Board,  and we can always use some help.  Sometimes, after planning stuff like trips, the Kickoff Meeting, the Chili Cook-Off, etc. we get "brain dead."

Talking about the Kickoff Meeting,  as of this writing, we have only 24 signed up, so don't wait until the last minute:  Send in your reservations (see below).

See you at the Kickoff Meeting,  (if I don't see you on the trail before then).

Aloha,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

ANNUAL KICKOFF MEETING AT SAM SNEADS TAVERN
October 7 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.

This is our annual General Membership Meeting to "kick off" the new membership year (October 1  - September 30.  This is the one meeting of the year when the Club buys the food  (but not the beverages) so, if you haven't already sent in your menu choice, do it now.  The choices are:

Center Cut Pork Loin with Mashed Potatoes

Pot Roast with Mashed Potatoes and Mixed Vegetables

Chicken and Mushroom Alfredo

(Pork Loin and Alfredo come with salad and dinner rolls)

Please reply to me, altaholic.t@gmail.com , with your menu choice so we can place the order with the restaurant.  Deadline is Monday, October 4.   If, for some reason,  you are unable to come after you have ordered, let us know so we can cancel the order:  The Club has to pay for whatever has been ordered.

Also, this is the meeting to sign up for the new membership year (that's why it's called the "Kick-Off" Meeting) so bring your checkbooks with completed membership form, already sent to you by separate email (also available on our website,  http://www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com ).

Finally, we will be raffling off a number of prizes,  including a free membership for the coming year, so---------see you on the 7th.   Should be a lot of fun.

PAU HANA, SKI MOVIE, AND SKI EQUIPMENT RAFFLE
The Shack-Waikiki, Waikiki Trade Center, 2255 Kuhio Ave.
 October 22 (Friday); 5:30 P.M.

On Friday, October 22,  Skirp Clothing, a local company, is showing the ski movie, Eye Trip, by Level I productions, at the Shack-Waikiki at 7:30 P.M.  Seating in the area reserved for the movie begins at 7:00 P.M.  The film basically features extreme and park skiing. You can view a trailer for the film at  http://vimeo.com/12966778.  Following the movie, at approximately 9 P.M., Skirp will hold a raffle of ski equipment from such known manufacturers as Lange and Look.  There will be a charge to enter the raffle, but the movie is free, and since the Shack is a bar and grill, it looks like more than a good excuse for an October Pau Hana.  Parking is available in the Waikiki Trade Center (entrance on Seaside Avenue coming in from Kalakaua), and there may be a few guest stalls available (first come, first serve) at Geof's Condo, 430 Lewers St. , which is just a block away.  The tan colored building across the street on Lewers, which also has some guest stalls, is part of Geof's complex.  If you park at Geof's, I will be in the lobby of 430 Lewers from 5:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M (unless the guest parking is filled before then) to let you in so that you can register your car as his visitor.   Wear your ski club shirts to the event:  "It pays to advertise."

RETURN OF THE LEGENDARY CHILI COOK-OFF
Wai'alae Nui Recreation Center, 2203 Halekoa Drive
November 14 (Sunday) 4 PM - 9 PM

When I first joined the club in the early 80s, the Chili Cookoff was an annual event, a potluck where the more daring, "culinarily inclined" members would bring their homemade chili for entry into the contest with everyone else serving as judges.   It so much fun, toasted palates notwithstanding, that we are bringing it back.  This will substitute for the Pre-Thanksgiving party of immediate years past, but anyone is welcome to bring turkey chili.   Between our October Kick-Off Meeting and just a little before the date of the event, we will be asking members to sign up to enter their chili in the contest or  bring other pot luck items, especially rice (especially), salad, and dessert.  All attendees will get to vote for their first, second, and third choices, and the Board has authorized some "good" prizes as well as a 4th "sur---prize.

SKI TRIPS FOR 2011

The trip committee is offering 3 trips for 2011 as described below.  The official Hawaii Ski Club trip will be the Telluride trip from January 21-January 29, 2011, and as of this publication, space remains available.

GREAT NEWS ABOUT TELLURIDE SKI WEEK

You have three choices: Full package is $1765; Land, lifts and ground transportation are $1050 (deduct $98 if no ground transport from the airport to Telluride); and Land-only package, which includes ground transportation, is $770 (deduct $98 if no ground transport).

There are still a few spots left, so sign up for the trip at the October Kick-off meeting Oct 7th . You can also mail the form to Hawaii Ski Club (make check payable to Rocky Mtn Tours)
c/o Telluride Trip, PO Box 3004, Aiea, HI 96701.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT TELLURIDE

Telluride is known for its world-class skiing and snowboarding, but that's not all there is to do here. Whether you're a non-skier or just taking a day off from the slopes, there is plenty to keep you occupied in the San Juans. From snowshoeing to soaking at the spa to soaring through the sky in a glider, there's something for everyone.  Other non-ski adventures include dog sledding, snowmobiling, or shopping in the quaint town of Telluride.  The Ski Trip Committee is currently researching activities for the trip, but we will definitely have the traditional welcoming wine and cheese gathering, NASTAR races, potluck night, and departing pizza party.  If there is another activity you would like to do, please provide the trip committee or Anita Hodges with details so that we can check it out as a possible group activity.

MORE ABOUT TELLURIDE RESORT

Stashed among the highest concentration of 14,000 foot peaks in North America, Telluride’s spectacular scenery is undeniably some of the most beautiful in the Rockies. But the breathtaking views are just a part of what makes Telluride stand out among mountain destinations.

Historic buildings, quaint bakeries, and local watering holes blend with luxury hotels, five-star restaurants, sophisticated shops, and some of the finest spas in the world.  There’s no traffic or long lines for shuttle buses, and in most cases no driving after you’ve arrived, as Telluride’s free gondola is the main source of transportation.

Adding to Telluride’s reputation for legendary terrain, the resort is thrilled to announce the opening of Black Iron Bowl. This hike-to playground is set against the dramatic backdrop of Palmyra Peak, adding eight runs adjacent to Prospect Bowl, including the wide-open Mountain Quail couloir, European-style faces, open glades and steep chutes.
