PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
I just got my computer back from the shop where it had been for two weeks: Two l-o-o-o-ng weeks of total frustration at inability to access information and communicate. A smart phone, I found out, has its limitations. I don't know about you, but I have really become dependent upon modern technology with its 24 hour a day connectivity, and not here at home, but when I go away skiing, it's really refreshing, and probably v-e-r-r-y healthy, to disconnect for a while. Thank you Kevin for sending out the reminder of last week's Pau Hana during my "technical problems" or however it was you put it.
It has been only four days since the announcement of the October 4th Kick-Off, and we have already received fourteen RSVPs. If for some reason you are not on our email list, are learning about the Kick-Off from the Website, and wish to come, please let me know ASAP. We want to make sure we have sufficient food and are already planning enough raffle prizes to give everyone, including all prospective members we hope current members will bring, a "fighting chance" to win. One of the reasons for doing the "Kick-Off" this way, this year, was to, hopefully, attract more new members with the more informal atmosphere than a sit-down dinner can lend itself.
Finally, with Christmas only three short months away, your Board is searching for a good location for our annual Christmas Party pot luck a week or two before Christmas. The Larges' who have been extremely gracious to offer their home to us for the past several years, on the eve of the Koko Marina Boat Parade, which has always been a welcome, additional attraction, are unable to do so this year. The location needs to be geographically reasonable (not on the North Shore), have enough plugs so that we can keep multiple pot luck dishes warm without blowing fuses, and be cheap (hopefully free). Anybody with a suggestion can contact me directly ( pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com ).
Keep those RSVPs for the Kick-Off rolling in, and see you on the 4th.
Aloha,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
THE INSTITUTE FOR HUMAN SERVICES
September 29
(Saturday) 11:45 A.M.
For the next community service event we will serve lunch at the Institute of Human Services on Saturday, September 29: www.ihshawaii.org/about/our-mission
The following information is from Catherine
Graham, Volunteer Coordinator at IHS:
"Thank you for gathering your
group to come to the Institute for Human Services and volunteer to help our
guests! We are all looking forward to having your group here on Sept. 29 from
12:00pm – 1:00pm (please arrive about 15 minutes early) to serve lunch at the
IHS men’s shelter. I believe that your group will have a wonderful time helping
the guests here at our shelter.
Additional important
information for you and your group:
1. Respect the confidentiality of our guests - no
cameras please
2. Sign in and out with reception
3. Parking is very limited, so please carpool
4. Wear appropriate clothing - Closed shoes, long
pants, no tank tops etc.
5. Please have each volunteer return the attached Hold
Harmless form on day of volunteering - all volunteers under 18 need to have a
parent or guardian sign the form (form already sent to Ski Club members with
separate announcement).
Thank you for taking the time
to contact us - it is through your kokua that we make a difference in the lives
of Oahu's citizens who are homeless"
Please note that we need to arrive at
IHS by 11:45 am. As Catherine noted, we should carpool, so I will let volunteers
know of other volunteers in their area. Please respond to me,
roy@hawaiisnowskiclub.com
as soon as possible so that I can give Catherine our head count.
We plan to meet for lunch at the
nearby Zippy's following the
event.

ANNUAL KICK-OFF MEETING
ALOHA TOWERS CONDOMINIUM, DIAMOND HEAD TOWER
2215 ALOHA DRIVE, WAIKIKI
October 4 (Thursday) 5:00 P.M.
Come, and bring potential members, to our annual Kick-Off Meeting, the one General Membership Meeting of the year when the Club pays for the grinds. This year, we are hoping to create a party atmosphere by holding the event in the Recreation Room at Geof's "condo" complex. For those of you who went to Big Sky last year, this is the same location where we held the packet pickup party for the trip. By buying all the food ourselves (though not the drinks: it's BYOB), rather than paying a restaruant to cook and serve it, we should be able to feed, without problem, all the prospective new members we hope you will be bringing with you (along with your checkbook to renew your membership) and have more gifts to raffle. A map to the condo and the free parking, at a lot off Kuhio avenue, just two blocks away, have already been provided in a separate email. Parking permits for the lot will be provided, by email, to those who RSVP for the meeting. The membership application for the coming year can be found on our website, www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com , at the "Sign Up" link. If you are unable to make it to the Kick Off Meeting, you can mail the form to us at the address given on the form.

OCTOBER PAU HANA
NICO'S AT PIER 38
1133 N.
NIMITZ HIGHWAY
October 26 (Friday) 5:00 P.M.
"Over the years, Nico's at Pier 38 has been a consistent
recipient of Honolulu Magazine's Hale 'Aina awards - including the Gold Award
for Best Seafood, also Honolulu StarAdvertiser's Oahu's Best Restaurants, and
has been featured on the Food Network's popular show, Diners Drive-Ins and Dives
with Guy Fieri. Recently, Chef Nico was selected by Hawaii Governor Neil
Abercrombie to represent Hawaii at the Great American Seafood Cook-Off held in
New Orleans. From downtown HNL, go
west on Nimitz Hwy, pass the
intersection with
Alakawa Street,
go one block & turn left at the light into
the pier next to Nico's. From the Ewa side, go towards HNL on Nimitz Hwy,
pass the intersections of Kalihi and then Waikamilo Road, and start to look
right for the large sign for Pier 38. The sign lists Nico's and
other companies. Turn
right to the pier area. The parking spaces are next to Nico's and also in areas
between The Ice Plant and Nico's.

FEEDING THE NEEDY ON THANKSGIVING DAY
Assisting the Salvation Army with feeding an early Thanksgiving Dinner to the needy at the Blaisdell Center has been a Ski Club tradition for, seemingly, forever. The "dinner" actually begins before noon which gives volunteers plenty of time to complete their duties and go to their own planned Thankgiving celebrations. All Hawaii Ski Club members, however, are encouraged to join the volunteers at our own potluck brunch on Thanksgiving Day. We meet outside the Blaisdell arena near the parking structure. It's a beautiful way to start off a day of Giving Thanks with friends and great food. More details to follow.

TRIP COMMITTEE
SUN VALLEY IDAHO
February 22 - March 2
You and your friends had until September 15th to sign up
for this HSC trip to Sun Valley but, due to cancellations and other issues, some
"slots" may still be available. Please contact Anita (
anitah@hawaii.edu ) or Sandy (
Sandy@hawaiisnowskiclub.com )
to determine if this is the case.
From Ski Magazine:
The more things change, the more they
stay the same at Sun Valley. America’s oldest ski resort celebrates its 75th
anniversary this year, but its cardinal virtues—and few shortcomings—have
endured since Sonja Henie filmed Sun Valley Serenade here in the 1940s.
Getting to Sun Valley has never been easy. But once you arrive, you discover
that Sun Valley’s isolation also keeps the crowds away. It’s a “well-kept secret
and the locals like it this way,” whispers one reader.
Baldy offers
top-to-bottom fall-line skiing, featuring “leg burner” runs that are “long, fun
and world class” for accomplished skiers. Baldy Mountain is “more challenging,”
while another mountain, Dollar Mountain, has perfect beginner/easy intermediate
terrain and excellent ski schools. Last season’s less-than-optimal weather cycle
left some patrons wanting for snow, but the resort still received high marks for
its massive snowmaking system and silky grooming. On-mountain dining is another
strong suit, earning a solid No. 3 (as ranked by Ski Magazine). No wonder. At
Seattle Ridge, one of the resort’s “extraordinary daylodges,” they’ll cook trout
to order. Upscale appetites will flock to the renovated Roundhouse restaurant
and the “nice addition” of the new gondola that serves it.
But Sun
Valley’s calling card might just be its No. 3–ranked service. The staff gets
high marks for everything from “remembering names and faces” to “carrying skis
from the shuttles.”
The overall effect: “You’re treated like royalty.”
The “old school ambience” extends to Ketchum where restaurants like the Pioneer
Saloon draw raves. All this adds up to making Sun Valley a truly “grand
destination” that’s “being reborn.” One fan sums it up as “the last of the
really special ski resorts.” Which only seems fitting, since it was also the
first. —Allen St. John

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITES:
HIKE FROM KOOLAU GOLF COURSE
September 8
(Saturday)
We arrived back at our cars, exactly when Toby said we would, wet, muddy, bedraggled,.... and totally elated! The downpour through the heavy canopy that caused the waterfall to suddenly rush and roar as we watched, only added to the hike. (We just briefly considered a flash flood.) You did it, Toby. You found a perfect hike with everything, including rope hiking and historic roads. Let's do it again!
WANDA
Only five of us showed up: Threatening weather? The skies opened up on us during the detour to the waterfall and the trickling fall and meandering brook both turned into an impressive deluge. We briefly considered turning back, but by the time we got back to main trail, the weather had pretty much cleared, and we continued on to the grassy spot between the two viaducts of the Pali Highway after it exits from the tunnel. We looked at the ladders to the other side but---no takers. Maybe another time.

PAU HANA AT PINKY'S IN KAILUA
September 21 (Friday)
Eight Club members eventually gathered for the September Pau Hana at Pinky's including a couple that aren't part of the usual crowd for these happenings. Interesting who shows up for something when it's in their own backyard. Good food and drink, reasonable prices, and friendly wait staff. I'd go back sooner than later.
