PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
As of this writing, Alan Teramura reports forty seven signups for Whistler-Blackcomb and forty eight for Japan: More have signed up for the "second" trip than for Hawaii Ski Week. Would you believe it? Maybe we should consider having Hawaii Ski Week in Japan in the next year or two.
Speaking of Alan, how many of you participated in last year's General Membership Meeting at the Honolulu Club where we had one hour or more of instruction on using a roller with our body weight to relieve stress and increase flexibility in our legs, arms, torso, etc.? Well, Alan is working on scheduling it again, for November. We don't know whether it will be on what would be our usual General Membership Date, November 1, or the following week, November 8, so stay tuned.
How many of you are on Facebook but haven't yet checked out the Hawaii Ski Club Facebook page? Mahalo to Anita Hodges for keeping it going. Yesterday, I saw pictures on the page from this past Sunday morning's bike ride, led by Geof, around Waikiki and Kakaako. Looks like only five participants, but the smiles bespeak a good time by all. Thanks, Geof, for sponsoring it.
Speaking of Anita, when I last spoke with her, we were a little short on volunteers for the Saturday, October 6 packing of meals for Lanakila Meals on Wheels. It is basically assembling an assortment of frozen meals for packing into soft coolers for later delivery to recipients and takes about two hours. If you're interested in helping out, please contact Anita, anita@hawaiisnowskiclub.com as soon as you can.
Also, Anita and Bill are working on getting us slotted in to volunteer for the annual Thanksgiving morning volunteer activity, assisting the Salvation Army in serving a Thanksgiving meal to the needy at the Blaisdell Center. The Club has been doing this ever since I've been a member (around 1983) and is one of the best, if not THE best, attended volunteer activity in which the Club is involved. Before the event itself, there is also a Club sponsored tailgate to which all club members, not just the volunteers, are invited. Stay tuned for signup information.
Finally, the annual Membership Kick-Off Meeting is only one week away. If you haven't yet contacted me with an RSVP that your are coming, please do so before this coming Sunday evening (September 30). We need to order enough food, and I still remember the time, a number of years ago, at the Navy Marine Golf Course when we ran out before everyone was fed. You can RSVP me via email pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com .
Hope to see you at the Kick-Off.
A hui hou kakou,

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP YEAR KICKOFF MEETING
RAINBOW BAY
MARINA
(next to Restaurant 604)
PEARL HARBOR
October 4 (Thursday) 5:00 PM
Come to our annual Kickoff Meeting at the Rainbow Bay Marina, Pearl Harbor. This is the outdoor picnic area with cabanas on the right hand side (facing towards the ocean) of the restaurant formerly known as Schooner's where we held our General Membership Meetings while Seven Palms at the Navy-Marine Golf Course was being renovated and becoming Irons. For those of you who unfamiliar with the area, take the exit off the H1 in Aiea or the airport viaduct, traveling west, to Kamehameha Highway. The signs on Kamehameha Highway should indicate that you are going towards Aloha Stadium. If you are coming from the airport viaduct, look for Radford Drive on your right, and the second left hand turn after Radford Drive will be preceded by a sign on the right reading "Pearl Harbor Historic Sights:" That's where your turn across Kamehameha Highway and into Pearl Harbor on the left. For those of you coming from the Aiea/H1 side, pass the stadium to your left and take the first right after the exit to the Ford Island bridge. Once you turn into Pearl Harbor, towards the water, as if you were going to visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right on the inner road, and drive under the Ford Island overpass (approximately 1/4 mile from where you turned onto the inner road). Park in the lot at Restaurant 604 (the former Schooner's). This is the one General Membership Meeting of the year when we pay for the food. We also reward many of you with door prizes. All you need to bring is yourselves; hopefully, a friend or two who might want to join; your beverage of choice; and your membership form and check for the new membership year. Actually, it is better if you mail in your form and check to Hawaii Ski Club-Membership, P.O. Box P.O Box 3004, Aiea, Hi. 96701-8504. The Membership/Renewal form can be found on our website www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com under "Sign Up."
You may also want to bring some extra cash as Fergie will have Club tee shirts for sale. Please email me pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , with the number in your party, no later than Monday evening, October 1, so we know how much food to supply. Also, no beach chairs or glass containers are allowed: If your beverage of choice comes in a glass bottle, be sure to bring some cups for consumption.
See you at the Kick-Off.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
LANAKILA MEALS ON WHEELS
1809 Bachelot St., Honolulu
October 6 (Saturday Morning), Time TBA
Our ski club
will volunteer for the Lanakila Meals-on-Wheels (LMOW) on Saturday, October 6 to
pack and/or deliver meals to recipients of the program. Numerous club
members have volunteered at Meals-on-Wheels in the past several years so
this is a well-attended community service activity. If you wish to
volunteer to join us, please respond to Anita Hodges,
anita@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , who
will email you the online application which is necessary
if you have not volunteered for Meals on Wheels within the past two to three
years. Because the Lanakila Meals-on-Wheels
program works with the elderly of our community, all volunteers must be screened
at the behest of the City and County of Honolulu. Looking forward to a
great turnout for our community service activity,
ANITA AND BILL HODGES
TRADITIONAL THANKSGIVING VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
SERVING AN EARLY THANKSGIVING DINNER TO THE NEEDY
AND PRE-EVENT POTLUCK
Blaisdell Center
777
Ward Ave.
November 22 (Thursday)
Times TBA
This is the 48th Annual Salvation Army Thanksgiving Day
Dinner served at the Blaisdell Center and, at least, the 26th year in a row that
the Hawaii Ski Club has joined with over 1000 community members from a variety
of civic groups and schools volunteering to make this event special for those
people who are less fortunate. This is an event where “it feels better to give
than receive.” You’ll enjoy your family Thanksgiving dinner more after you have
served meals to the elderly and poor of our community.
Although our club volunteers
for only 2 hours on Thanksgiving morning, we have a pre-event tailgate potluck outside the auditorium, in the grassy
area between the parking structure and the arena, for all club members. This is an annual
tradition where we enjoy the fellowship of other ski club members before we
serve dinner. Every club member is invited to join this tailgate even if you are
unable to volunteer inside the auditorium.
ANITA
ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY
The
Esplanade, 500 Lunalillo Home Road
December 16 (Sunday)
5:30
P.M.
Would you believe our Traditional Ski Club Christmas Party is on the same date as last year's, September 16? Only this time it's on a Sunday, not a Saturday. Sylvia "Sam" Wright has come through yet again to get us the recreation room/terrace at her condo, The Esplanade, on Hawaii Kai Drive. This is both pot luck and BYOB. Also, if you want to participate (almost all do) in the traditional gift exchange, bring a grab gift with approximate value of $15.00 You will be given a raffle ticket, and when your number is called, have the option of choosing a gift from the "pile" or one that has already been chosen, thereby forcing the original chooser to choose from the pile again: This can get pretty funny, satisfying, or frustrating depending upon whether you are victor, victim, or spectator----at that particular moment. and victors can turn into victims at the next ticket pulled. To get to the Esplanade, turn left off Kalanianaole Highway at Lunalillo Home Road, the last traffic light before the highway goes up the hill towards Hanauma Bay. Drive in the mountain direction approximately .6 of a mile and look for the looming white building complex on the left. While parking is limited at the building (eleven guest stalls in the circle at the entrance) there is normally plenty of street parking available on the other side of the street and on side streets off the other side. The recreation area is right on the ground level beside the lobby.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
PAU HANA AT NICOS PIER 38-KAILUA
970 N. Kalaheo
Avenue, Kailua
September 21 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.
Well, we tried again, and again, just like last year, all we could scare up for a trip to Nico's Kailua was six members, the usual suspects: Geof, Bill and Anita, Linda, Craig, and myself. Cathy (Lau) and Larry (Thurston), however, showed up just as we were leaving, a little after 6:00 P.M., and urged us to record them. The total turnout, therefore, was actually eight, but the latecomers were on their own. Since the last time we were at Nico's Kailua, the furniture has improved, the drinks selection and pupus are as good as ever, they had a solo singer/guitarist for entertainment, and the happy hour prices (Cathy and Larry missed 'em) were fine. Two IPAs (one over my limit), an order of chicken, tax, and tip was about $25.00, and I got over the mountain to my house in less than thirty minutes. Don't know if we'll do it again unless we have some definite interest.
