CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

Every Monday evening (except on holidays and, of course, during Hawaii Ski Week), at 4:30 P.M., a group of ski club members and their friends play tennis at Keehi Lagoon Courts, off  Lagoon Drive.  Stay in shape and enjoy a "careful social hour" afterwards.

Sept 2 (Thursday) 5:00 PM (Meeting at 6:00):  Our first General Membership Meeting in, it seems like, forever, at Mangiamo by 604, Navy Marine Golf Course, 943 Valkenburgh St. (near the airport).

October 7 (Thursday) 5:00 PM (Meeting at 6:00)  General Membership Meeting at Mangiamo by 604 in lieu of our Annual Kickoff Meeting at Rainbow Bay Marina which has been cancelled  (see Presidents Message below).

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

With much appreciation to Anita and Bill Hodges for working on securing Rainbow Bay Arena for our annual membership year Kickoff on October 7,  we decided, at our Board Meeting on August 19, to cancel it, unfortunately now for the second year in a row, in view of the difficulty of meeting the then current requirements for group gatherings at that type of venue, and that was before the governor's announcement that outdoor gatherings could not exceed 25.  We, however, are not cancelling the date for a Club get-together as you can see in the Calendar:  We have scheduled our second General Membership Meeting on the lanai at Mangiamo on that same date.  Don't forget to contact Anita,  anita@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , with your RSVP for our first General Membership Meeting of the year on September 2:  That's next Thursday already.   As long as the restaurant limits the seating per table and spaces the tables as they intend, we keep our masks on except for when we are eating and drinking, and we have already taken our own personal steps to stay healthy, we should be in pretty good shape next Thursday evening.

As I have previously mentioned, if you have yet to renew your membership for the current year, ending this coming September 30, just 5 weeks from now, there is still time to join, now for a reduced rate since it's after April 1, and since you will be a member for this year, your membership automatically carries over into next year:  No need to pay again until October, 2022.  Because of the dearth of Ski Club activities due to the pandemic, we decided to give every current member a "free ride" for next year.   Just go to our website,  www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com , click on "Join/Renew Membership" in the "Contents" box on the left side, answer a few questions, choose a payment method, and you're done.   No more form to print out and complete by hand.  The electronic form and payment system, unlike the rest of the website, is secure.    For those who still want to do it the "old way,"  I will have a few hard copy membership forms at the General Membership Meetings on September 2 and October 7 at Magiamo.

Talking about "get-togethers,"  I'm pleased we were able to have one, a July Pau Hana, which is reported below.  Although nothing is yet scheduled for the immediate future, Geof is "threatening" one so stay tuned.  We might be informing you of another Pau Hana by separate email.

For those of you who have been considering the Aspen-Snowmass trip in January but are still deliberating, there's not much time left to make a decision.  As Alan tells us in "Announcements," below, we need to give up the rooms reserved for the Club if they are not booked by mid September. Also, we don't yet have enough people (we have 6 <which includes me>, and we need 10) to get the advertised price on the airfare.

A hui hou kakou and take care of yourself.  By taking good care of yourself, you are taking care of those around you.

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

 GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
MANGIAMO BY 604
NAVY MARINE GOLF COURSE
943 VALKENBURGH ST.
September 2 (Thursday) 5 PM (Meeting at 6:00)

As previously indicated, this is the site of the former Sam Sneads which became Seven Palms, Irons, and then closed several years ago.  It had been our "home" for General Membership Meetings under all of its incarnations, is delighted in our interest, and will serve us outside on the lanai with table size, table spacing, and seating arranged to conform to current CDC/State/County recommendations and rules.  Just turn off Nimitz onto Valkenburgh, drive down a little over 3/10 of a mile, take a right into the golf course parking lot, and the restaurant is on the second floor of the clubhouse building.  You can also get to Valkenburgh from Radford Drive.  The meeting won't start until 6 P.M., but they are expecting us to start showing up at 5:00 to order drinks and pupus or dinner.   If you haven't done this already, please RSVP Anita,  anita@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , so we can give the restaurant a "heads up" on how many of us to expect.   Hope to see you on September 2.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

JULY PAU HANA
DAVE AND BUSTER'S
Friday July 23, 2021

When I arrived, around 4:15 PM, I counted at least 5 members already celebrating the return to live get-togethers, and by the time I left, early, around 6:15 PM,  the crowd had swelled to 14, an auspicious start to the return to pau hanas.  Fortunately, for those of us who had been a bit concerned, we practically had the entire room to ourselves.   Possibly a testament to the age of many of us or, to be generous, our absence from the "scene" for many, many months,  the biggest issue of the evening was trying to figure out the electronic ordering system (it got to be funny), and they finally had to send over a waiter to take our orders "the old way."  I guess we need either a less modern location or more experience which our bar guide, Geof, promises to give us.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

SKI TRIPS FOR 2022

Aspen Snowmass Ski Trip

Aloha All,

This is the second update from the Trip Committee on the Aspen Snowmass Ski trip scheduled for January 21-29, 2022. To date we have 36 members who have registered and paid their deposit. We still have 7 double occupancy hotel rooms and 2 quad occupancy condos available for those Ski Club members who wish to go. We understand that a number of people who are considering going to Aspen Snowmass are still waiting to see how the COVID-19 situation unfolds with the new delta variant. However, due to the terms of our contract with Ski.com, we need to release any unfilled rooms by mid September to avoid additional cancellation fees. Therefore, please be aware that the current lodging prices can only be guaranteed up to September 15.   After this date, we will release any vacant rooms back to Ski.com and lodging prices will be subject to the availability and prevailing prices at the resort.

For those who have already registered for the trip, the Trip Committee wishes to remind you that Ski.com has secured round trip airfare from Honolulu to Aspen (via Los Angeles for plane changes) for $735 on United Airlines. This is a very competitive price and one of the best we’ve had in years. To date, only 6 individuals have made reservations for this airfare and we need a minimum of 10 to qualify for this group airfare price, so if you haven’t already made travel arrangements, please consider it.

To register for the trip lodging, airfare, lift tickets and Farewell Dinner click on the link below:
