PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

I begin this month's  message,  my last for this term as President, by welcoming Rebecca & Stewart Taggart and Andrea & Richard Ray to the Club.  Hope to meet you soon at one of our General Membership Meetings or another activity.  I'd also like to welcome Sandy Herron back to the sunny skies of Honolulu:  Has it been one year or two?

Geoff (Chu)  reports great weather but somewhat hard snow, before the sun hit it, at Mammoth two weeks ago, and Bill (Hodges), who just got back from Whistler/Blackcomb, reports good soft snow and remaining winter conditions, especially up on the glacier (of course).  A friend of mine in Utah reports getting pounded by soggy snow as she was riding the chair at Alta on Monday (3-27-17).  The West Coast got so much snow this year that Squaw and Alpine Meadows, as well as Mammoth, intend to stay open this year until July 4th.  I expect, however, that the areas of the mountains on which it will be possible to ski will get fewer and fewer until the word "open" becomes a technicality.  If all I was personally interested in was the technicality, I could have stayed away from New Zealand this year and gone to California.  I WILL be going down under from August 1 to August 14, staying in Queenstown, and skiing both the Queenstown areas, Coronet Peak and The Remarkables and travelling further north to ski Cardrona, and Treble Cone (the "scene of the crime").  If anyone is interested in joining me, get in touch,  and I'll give you the details on navigating trip planning.

In case you didn't read Jonathan's email a few weeks ago or have been "off the rock" or under one,  we are going to Mammoth Mountain next year.  I'm really looking forward to it as I've heard great things about Mammoth but have never been there.  Geoff always seems to go in March, but after Hawaii Ski Week in January and several weeks in Utah following only a brief  return to Honolulu, I've never gotten it together for a third trip in such a short space of time.  Mammoth is kind of off the beaten path, but I'm sure that new Trip Committee Chair, Gaye Dickey, will find a way to get us there.  Gaye has already begun work on the trip and may have something to report at our upcoming General Membership Meeting on April 6.   We all owe outgoing Chair, Jonathan Carr a debt of gratitude for the work he has put in these past three years to get us to snow country economically and efficiently and, further, to put up with us before and during the trip.  Now, he'll be able to "sit back" and enjoy it for a change.

The election for next year's President and Board of Directors will be held at the April 6 General Membership Meeting,  Ruby Tuesday-Moanalua.  The last I heard (which was at the last General Membership Meeting), we had as many accepted nominations for the Board as positions available, and no one was running against me------yet for the presidency again--------but who knows?

Hope to see many of you at the General Membership Meeting/Election on April 6 and/or at some of our activities.

A hui hou kakou,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
and
ANNUAL ELECTION OF PRESIDENT AND BOARD OF DIRECTORS
at
RUBY TUESDAY
Moanalua Shopping Center
930 Valkenburgh St.
April 6 (Thursday) 5:00 P.M.

Come to Ruby Tuesday-Moanalua for our April General Membership Meeting and the annual election of our President and  Board of Directors.  The restaurant is located at the Ewa end of the Moanalua Shopping Center, directly across Valkenburgh St. from the Navy Marine Golf course where we previously held out meetings.  We will be in the covered lanai at the Ewa end of the restaurant which is on the Ewa side of the shopping center.  While the actual meeting will probably not start until sometime between 5:30 and 6:00, come at 5:00 to start with the grinds and the stories.

HIKE IN AINA HAINA
End of Hao St.
April 15 (Saturday) 9:00 A.M.

This will be a shady valley hike which starts on a jeep road at the end of Hao St., turns into a trail, gradually climbs up the valley, goes through a bamboo forest, crosses a river, and ends up in a shady open area surrounded by tall trees where we will have a nice but narrow view of the civilization below and the ocean. It is not a state sponsored trail but well travelled and well marked with pink ribbon.  I did it a little over a month ago with my Friday hiking group.  In and out should take no more than 2.5 - 3 hours including a fifteen minute stop for rest, snacks, and conversation at the turn around.  It is a "comparatively" easy hike except for one steep dirt pitch maybe 15 feet long, on which I had no trouble with hiking poles and microspikes on my shoes but might be difficult for someone with smooth soled running shoes:  I would suggest hiking boots or trail running shoes with good tread (Kids can do it with ordinary running shoes----but they are kids).  To get to the start, turn off Kalanianaole Highway onto West Hind Drive, which is the turn to go into Aina Haina Shopping Center, go down West Hind Drive .3 mile and take a left onto Nohu St., go up Nohu to Hao St., turn right on Hao, go to the end of the road, turn around, and look for a place to park.  If you are planning on coming, please RSVP to pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com .  The last hike didn't generate much interest, and I don't want to start this one without sufficient turnout.

APRIL PAU HANA
NICO'S PIER 38
1129 N. Nimitz Highway
April 28 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.

According to my Gmail key word search, we haven't been to Nico's for a Pau Hana since our packet pickup for the Hakuba, Japan trip in January, 2013. This favorite of Honolulu's Pau Hana crowd for beverages and seafood is located off Nimitz Highway in the ocean direction just town side of the intersection with Waiakamilo Rd.  The entrance has a number of signs, including one for Nico's, displaying the restaurants and other business concerns at Pier 38 area and is opposite (on the other side of Nimitz Highway) the strip mall containing New Eagle Cafe.  Pull into the entrance, find parking on the left as close to the buildings as you can get,  walk down towards the water, and look for the rest of us either in the small area outside or inside the restaurant.  I know a lot you don't come until around 5:00 P.M. but would appreciate some early arrivals at 4:00 so we have a better chance of grabbing a table and not have to wait in line at this popular hangout.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

 PAU HANA
at
BUCA DI BEPPO
Friday, March 24

Who knew they had a bar at Buca Di Beppo?  I didn't, but Geoff did (of course) and suggested it for our March Pau Hana.  On the plus side, there was plenty of free parking in nearby lots including Ward Warehouse and Ward Center and Buca was easy to find even if you had never been there before.  Also, the drinks were available at Happy Hour prices even though our waitress first advised us, mistakenly, that they weren't on Fridays.  On the negative side, the food prices were a bit on the high side and so were the portions, even when you ordered them to share, so you needed to have an appetite.  Also, the seating was primarily in booths rather than around open tables which made it a little difficult to widely socialize.  Still, a good fourteen to eighteen of us made it to the Pau Hana which is a goodly number and speaks well for central locations.  See you next month at Nico's.
