PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
Sorry for the late Newsletter this time, but I just got back Friday morning (12:30 A.M.) from a three week ski vacation, and my only "computer," while away from home, is my iphone7.
For most of us, unless we're still somewhere in ski country, planning a spring trip (I know Geoff is), or planning/thinking about a summer trip to South America or "Down Under" (I am), the 2017 season is over. How did it go for you? Did you find yourself a bit sore, a bit more tired than you expected? It could have been the altitude but, more likely, you were a bit out of shape and now, not January 1, 2018, is the time to start getting into a daily or almost daily exercise regimen to make sure it doesn't happen again. We will be scheduling hikes and, hopefully, some other physical activities during the year, and our tennis group meets every Monday, but once a week or even a couple of times a week really isn't enough to get into the kind of shape that skiing/snowboarding demands: You need to find something physical you like to do or, at least, don't mind doing several times a week, make the time, and stick to it. Enough preaching---for now.
I just got back from skiing at Alta where it has snowed over four feet in three days: Unfortunately, I was only there for the first day of the storm which was my last day before coming home (bad timing?) and I feel lucky to have gotten down the canyon road at 3:45 P.M. without incident. Alta also got quite a lot of snow in lesser amounts most of the time I was there, but when it's snowing, there is poor visibility a lot of the time and there are repeated road closures for clearing and avalanche control. This cut a bit into the spots on the mountain where it was safe to ski and limited time on the mountain: I remember only five days of sun the whole three weeks. Also, while I was there, I had a chance to meet and speak with Steve Fisher from Lahaina, operator of the Maui Ski Bus. He bought and converted a small bus into a R.V., painted and shipped it to the Mainland, has Maui Ski Bus prominently printed on the vehicle in large black lettering, flies the Hawaiian flag when he's in a ski area parking lot, visited over one hundred ski areas last season, and hopes to do the same this season. I've got a few more ski stories but enough for now. At the Pau Hana this past Friday, Gaye Dickey was holding court at the other side of our table telling Japan ski stories, but I didn't get the chance to hear any of them: I hope to make up for this at the General Membership Meeting this coming Thursday---if she's there.
As Jonathan has already reminded you, our annual Board elections are coming up and, including me, there are five vacancies to be filled. If you have some definite ideas about how the Club should function and new directions which the Club should be taking, are willing to spend an hour or so almost every month in a meeting, maybe do a little work between meetings (studying various issues, doing some phoning or emailing, etc.), and would like being treated to a nice dinner once a year, let Jonathan know that you are willing to run.
I'm hopeful that Ruby Tuesday works out for us this coming Thursday. Geoff and I checked it out last month when it turned out that Irons had closed down. Ruby Tuesday is right across the street from the Navy Marine Golf course where we used to go and, like the golf course, has plenty of free parking. If it doesn't work out, "it's back to the drawing board." If you know of a more suitable, centrally located venue for our monthly General Membership Meetings, we're very open to recommendations.
Hope to see you on Thursday.
A hui hou kakou,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
RUBY TUESDAY
Moanalua Shopping Center
930 Valkenburgh St.
March 2
(Thursday) 5:00 P.M.
Come to Ruby Tuesday-Moanalua for
our March General Membership Meeting where
Jonathan will be announcing the winning destination for next year's Hawaii Ski
Week. Also, most of our members, who have been off
skiing Japan, Utah, Canada, and other places should be back by that time and
able to share their tales of "derring do." The restaurant is located at the Ewa
end of the Moanalua Shopping Center which is directly across the Valkenburgh St.
from the Navy Marine Golf course where we previously held out meetings. We
will be in the covered lanai at the Ewa end of the restaurant which is on the
Ewa side of the shopping center. While the actual meeting will probably
not start until sometime between 5:30 and 6:00, come at 5:00 to start with the
grinds and the stories.

MARCH PAU HANA
at
BUCA DI BEPPO
1030 Auahi St.
March 24
(Friday) 4:00 P.M.
March 24 is National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day (I'm not
making this up). To celebrate this auspicious occasion, we will be having
our almost monthly Pau Hana at the bar at Buca Di Beppo where I don't think we
can get chocolate covered raisins but we will be able to order drinks and pupus.
Pau Hana runs from 3:00 P.M. to 6 P.M. with $3.00 drafts of beer, $3.00 glasses
of house wine, and $4.00 - $5.00 appetizers. For those not in the know,
Buca Di Beppo is located on Auahi St. just downstairs (street level) and to the
left of the escalator leading up to the Ward 16 theaters and directly underneath Dave &
Busters. Parking should be available in the theater parking lot and/or at
the soon to be demolished Ward Warehouse or Ward Center. See you at Buca
Di Beppo.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
FEBRUARY
PAU HANA AT RUMFIRE
ON THE BEACH AT THE SHERATON WAIKIKI
2255 Kalakaua Ave.
February 24 (Friday) 4:30 P.M.
I counted ten Ski Club members/guests at the Rumfire Pau Hana. We had a table outside with Diamond Head looming above us in the distance, the water gently lapping the shore, and sailboats making their way back and forth against the horizon. It is a very comfortable and picturesque venue but was a bit chilly that evening for sitting outdoors and, also, a bit pricey: One beer, a plate of Kalua Pork nachos, and a bowl of fried rice cost close to $50.00 with tip which is, maybe, why we hadn't been back there in a while. Still, although in the heart of Waikiki, it was faster and easier to get to than I had expected, the parking in the Sheraton garage was free as long as we had a minimum bill of $25.00 per person, and the conversation was interesting and spirited. Next month's Pau Hana at Buca Di Beppo should be a little easier on the wallet.
