PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Just sent my payment in for Ski Week 2008 in Whistler.  Bought a new Burton board last month in Newport Beach of all places and can't wait.  We have almost 30 members committed and hope the count grows.

The Fourth of July was a lot more crowded than I expected and probably the most people I've ever seen on the beach where I paddle out to surf Threes but what they have done to my old neighborhood is awesome.  We ran into Wandas family who took a small vacation in Waikiki and was staying at one of the remodeled hotels on Lewers Street.  If you have a chance, go visit the renovated Beachwalk neighborhood and enjoy the new stores and restaurants, stroll along the beach and wash off the sand in the unique fountain on Lewers Street if you can figure out where the water will shoot out next.

The Board has a Zoo Concert, Bike Ride and our Annual Pool Party planned for the remainder of Summer.  Hope you can join us!

Aloha,

Geof

DISNEY'S LION KING
September 23, 6:30 P.M.

Sunday, Sept 23: Lion King performance and pre-show cocktails and/or dinner

Approximately 40 ski club members, family and friends have tickets for the Lion King at NBC Concert Hall on Sunday, Sept 23 for the 6:30 PM performance.  Prior to that performance we are organizing a pre-show cocktail and/or dinner "party" outside the concert hall for those with show tickets and for other club members who just enjoy partying. We plan to gather about an hour before the show (5:30PM) to have cocktails, a light meal and/or dessert (Wandi LOVES the chocolate desserts they serve) in front of the main entrance. Caterers serve a variety of dishes and refreshments before each performance.  In addition, by arriving early you'll find a good parking spot for a quick exit after the show

ANNUAL KICK OFF MEETING

 September 27, 5:30 P.M.

THE ANNUAL  KICK-OFF MEETING HAS BEEN CHANGED TO THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27  AT 5:30 P.M. AT SAM SNEAD'S TAVERN IN ORDER TO  AVOID CONFLICT WITH THE HAWAII SKI CLUB'S TRIP TO THE ALBUQUERQUE BALLOON FIESTA THE FIRST WEEK OF OCTOBER.

IMPORTANT; PLEASE READ AND RESPOND: The annual kick-off meeting is the official beginning of our ski club year! It's a time to celebrate the beginning of a year of club events including fantastic club trips to the Balloon Fiesta in October 2007, Ski Week 2008 in Whistler, Canada in January as well as numerous local events in Hawaii.  Come to the kickoff to hear all we've planned for the 2007-2008 year.

Traditionally the ski club board of directors provides free food (not alcohol) at the kick-off meeting.  Last year we ordered too much food, so this year we ask everyone who is planning to attend the Sept 27th kick-off meeting to RSVP to Anita by email(See
Contacts
) or phone (486-8667).  This is not a commitment to attend the kick-off meeting; but it will give the ski board an idea of how many people to expect and to order food accordingly.

****PLEASE RSVP TO ANITA BY SEPTEMBER 15TH IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND THE KICKOFF MEETING ON THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 27TH SO WE CAN ORDER THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF FOOD!!!!

JIMMY BUFFET CONCERT             October 4,

At the August 20th  pau hana at Campadres, a group of ski club members decided to attended the Jimmy Buffet concert at the Waikiki Shell on Thursday, Oct 4.  This morning (Saturday, July 21),  I bought 6 seats (the max allowed per order) for open seating on the lawn (these are the cheapest seats at $38.50 plus handling fees) on ticketmaster.com.   If you haven't attended an event at the Shell, it is always a great outdoor experience with BYO refreshments, seating under the stars and a view of the adjacent Diamond Head.

Buy tickets and join ski club friends and Parrot Head fans of Jimmy Buffet. Tickets sell out fast for this one-night event, so buy yours today

HOT AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL IN ALBUQUERQUE , NM October

THANKSGIVING VOLUNTEERING AT NBC ARENA November

WHISTLER SKI TRIP, THE HIGHLIGHT OF OUR CLUB YEAR January 08

JULY 4TH CELEBRATION IN WAIKIKI

Twelve to fifteen Ski Club members accepted President Geof Chus gracious offer to the use his penthouse level Waikiki apartment as a staging area to view the annual Ala Moana fireworks display.   From 5 to 8 p.m. we enjoyed unaparalled camaraderie, ono pupus, copious libations, and the close to panoramic views from Geofs Eagles Nest apartment.   At 8 p.m. we made our way to the beach in front of the Outrigger Reef Hotel which, we thought, would be less crowded than Ala Moana but----think again!!!!!.   Looked like everyone else had the same idea.   Those of us who wore slippers were in good shape but, with the incoming tide at the time of the fireworks, half the beach ended up in the shoes worn by the rest of us.   The fireworks show, however, lived up to its billing, and we had a good time lingering, ogling the tourists, enjoying gelato and other delicacies from the new Beachwalk shops, and, to those of us to whom this applied, finally shaking the sand out of our shoes on our way back to Geofs after the show.   For those of us who seldom get to (or purposely avoid) Waikiki, it was a good excuse to go.  Thank you, again, Geof, for your hospitality.  I hope your apartment survived.

Toby

Hawaii Ski Club members started our 4th of July birthday celebration at Geof's Waikiki condo, munching on all the delectable goodies that everyone brought. The highlight of the meal though was MaryBeth's  scrumptious, gigantic cookie decorated appropriately for the occasion!   It was an extraordinary experience to watch a spectacular fireworks display with sand between our toes and water occasionally washing over our feet on a world-class Waikiki beach! After the show, we discovered an exciting way to wash the sand off! Then we stood in line for Italian gelato while devouring some Papa Beard cream puffs.  What a way to end an incredible evening with great friends!

JULY 20TH PAU HANA AT COMPARDES

In the late afternoon of July 20th, approximately twelve ski club members enjoyed magaritas, cervezas,  Tex-Mex pupus, and a lot laughs on the outside deck of  Compadres in Ward Center.  Fortunately, and for the first time in my experience, the deck was virtually deserted allowing us to join tables without a problem.    Unexpectedly joining us were former Ski Club member Asta Poirier (sic) and friend just in for a visit from her new home in Florida (that other place with beaches and palm trees).  The prices at Comprades are slightly on the high side, but the ambience of the setting, the camaraderie, and the buzz of the libations made this a non issue.    Hasta Luego.

IMPORTANT: PASSPORT RENEWALS

If you will be joining us on the January ski trip to Whistler or plan on traveling outside the USA within the next 6-12 months, apply as early as possible for either new or renewed passports since some countries, including Canada, require that a U.S. passport be valid for six months after a planned stay.

Travelers face the prospect of lines at local post offices and regional processing centers and should allow 10 to 12 weeks to receive a routine passport vs. an earlier standard of four to six weeks. Those who are willing to pay an extra $60 can expect to receive an expedited version in three to four weeks(up from 1-2 weeks)

Currently all Americans must carry passports when returning by AIR from another country, including Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

As early as January 2008, the regulations will be expanded to cover foreign travel by car or cruise ship. Processing delays stemming from the boost in demand have forced some travelers to postpone or cancel trips. Remember our trip is January 2008, so even if you drive over the Canadian border, you may have to have a US passport by then.
