 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

A number of you have been asking, "What's up with the Mammoth Trip," as we have normally put down our initial deposit by now and have already signed up for our rooms and roommates, etc.  Nothing to fear.  We already have rooms reserved at the resort and, if our first travel choice falls through, we have airline seats on Alaska Air from L.A. to Mammoth on hold until November.   Connecting with the Alaska Air flight, however, would necessitate taking another carrier to L.A. and trudging our own bags between terminals from one flight to the next.  What we are trying to set up, our first choice, is a seamless trip where you will check your bags in Honolulu and pick them up in Mammoth, and this means flying to San Francisco on United where United is about to announce a new route into Mammoth.  Unfortunately, they have yet to price the route and post the flights for reservations:  This may be because, as of this Newsletter,  Mammoth, believe it or not, is still partially open,  and negotiations with United for next season have yet to be finalized.  When they are, we will have our exact price nailed down, the sign-up form will be on the web from Ski.com as in recent years, and we can put our money down.  Our second choice is to use the aforementioned Alaska Air flight from L.A. which is a bit less convenient.  So we have a Plan A, Plan B, and could even consider a Plan C, but never mind that for now.  Everything is very well in hand.  (With Mammoth still open, one might wonder why I am spending so much money to go down to ski in New Zealand on August 1, my first time back since "The Event" in 2013) Close to fifty of you have already put your names down for Mammoth and we still have room for more (See "Announcements," below, for contact information).

Also, don't forget that the Club is also sponsoring a second trip, to Rusutsu in Hokkaido, Japan, in late February.  Our leader for this trip, Alan Teramura, advises that twenty five are already confirmed, another six are in the process of booking, and three have already extended the trip for an additional three days to nearby Kiroro.  More can be accommodated.   If you are interested in going on the Japan trip, details are available below, under "Announcements," including Alan's email address.

You, especially you wine and beer enthusiasts, will notice that the wine and beer tastings have been eliminated from the write-up of the End-of-Summer Party at the Hodges'. This is because some potential liability issues have been brought to our attention.  The Party however, is BYOB, and this should not stop you from sharing any particularly tasty offerings that you have discovered and feel should earn you bragging rights.  The party will still be a BLAST, and those of you who have been to the Hodges'' before know what to expect.   I'm just wondering if Bill, who was the winner of the last Club chili contest, will have enough time away from his hosting duties to defend his title.

As you can see from the schedule above, we have a full plate of activities in store over the next few months, and we will likely be adding more as the year progresses.

I won't be seeing you at the next General Membership Meeting on August 3 as that will be my first day on the snow in New Zealand, but I will subject myself to a "debriefing" at the next Pau Hana, at Buffalo Wild Wings,  on August 24.   See you then.

A hui hou kakou,

TOBY

PAU HANA AT BUFFALO WILD WINGS
Pearl Highlands Center
(Above Sam's Club)
1000 Kamehameha Highway
Pearl City
August 24 (Thursday) 4:00 PM.

A few Ski Club Members tried out BWW-Pearl City a few weeks ago and decided it would be a good Pau Hana location.

Happy hour is from 2 pm - 7 pm. We decided to do a Thursday night Pau Hana as on THURSDAY'S they have special prices for their signature Buffalo wings appetizers. Other days during the week they are very expensive. They also have other types of appetizers for $5 during happy hour. If you would like larger meals they have Salads, Burgers and Sandwich Wraps. Beer and Wine are on Happy Hour Specials..

The bar is located in the back of the restaurant, a large area with lots of tables. Get there early for faster service since it's a discount day for wings (which is why we are having it on Thursday rather than Friday) !!

The location is Pearl City Highlands above Sam's Club next to the Regal Theater. If that does not ring a bell.....then think of across from Pearl City Home Depot. PARKING IS ON THE UPPER LEVEL.

See you there!

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
LANAKILA MEALS ON WHEELS
1809 Bachelot St.
Honolulu, HI. 96817
August 26 (Saturday)

Our ski club has volunteered for the Lanakila Meals-on-Wheels on Saturday Morning, August 26.  Numerous club members have volunteered at Meals-on-Wheels in the past to pack or deliver meals,  and this is a well-attended community service activity.

If you wish to volunteer to help us, please respond to
anita@hawaiisnowskiclub.com  for an online application.  Because the Lanakila Meals-on-Wheels program works with the elderly of our community, all volunteers must be screened at the behest of the City and County of Honolulu.

The Ski Club will host lunch for volunteers at the conclusion of the activity.

Looking forward to a great turnout.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
HONOLULU CLUB
932 Ward Ave, 7th Floor
September 7 (Thursday)  4:45 P.M.

Our September 7 General Membership Meeting is one everyone should plan to attend, even if you have never attended before. This meeting is special in several ways. It will be held at the Honolulu Club (www.Honoluluclub.com) on Ward Ave, one of the premier health facilities in Oahu. We have arranged complimentary parking in the building and free access to the facilities, lockers and showers. After having a light meal (on your own), two of the Club's best personal trainers will give us an hour of instruction on stretching exercises and techniques to massage your muscles and remove toxins from your body. The exercises that you will learn are designed for you to do at home or in your hotel room after a day on the slopes. Your body will be so thankful!

Arrive at the Honolulu Club a little before 5 pm and take the elevators to the 7th floor. Turn left outside the elevators and proceed to the reception desk and identify yourself as a Hawaii Ski Club member. You will be directed to our reserved area where you can order a drink and something to eat. You may wish to either wear a yoga or workout outfit or bring a change of clothes for you to slip into in the locker rooms. At 6 pm we'll meet our instructors, who will lead us though various stretches and muscle massaging techniques over the next hour. The Club has yoga mats and towels for your use. Afterwards, you can sit at the bar and enjoy some more drinks, visit the sauna or steam rooms, or go into the hot tubs ( indoor and outdoors). See you all there.

PAU HANA AT NICOS PIER 38-KAILUA
970 N. Kalaheo Avenue, Kailua
 September 22 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.

The last time we went to this venue, in July of 2014, it was called Pinky's Pupu Bar and Grill, had been on our normal "rotation" for a number of years, especially to give our Windward members a break,  but was looking increasingly "seedier" with every year.  Well, it has been taken over by Nico's Pier 38 and after an introductory period of lunch only, is finally open for Pau Hana and dinner.  Time to give it a try.  For those who haven't been there at all, it is located at 970 Kalaheo Drive at the intersection of Kalaheo Drive and Mokapu Blvd.   If you are coming from Honolulu/Pearl City side via the H3 or Likelike and continuing down Mokapu Blvd. it will be on your right (Aikahi Park Shopping Center will be on the far side of the intersection on your left).  You will have to take a right onto Kalaheo Drive and then a quick left (if there is no traffic) or turn around a little ways down Kalaheo and drive back to get into the parking lot.  Of course, coming down Kalaheo from Kailua town, the turn into Pinky's is "mo easy."  By the way, in case you are unaware of this, H3 has drawn a lot of Windward direction traffic away from Likelike Highway so getting over to the Windward side via Likelike is now relatively "painless."

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP YEAR KICKOFF MEETING
Waihonua at Kewalo
1189 Waimanu Street (at the end of Pensacola Street)
6th Floor Recreation Deck
Tel 380-3116
October 5 (Thursday)  Time TBA

The Recreation Deck at Gaye's condo, The Waihonua at Kewalo,  was so accessible and comfortable for our Post Trip Party following Hawaii Ski Week in January that we have happily accepted her gracious invitation to go back for our annual new membership year Kickoff Meeting.   We will even get a private room this time.  For the meeting, you provide your beverage of choice, your good cheer, and, hopefully, a friend or two who want to join.  We, in turn, provide the food and door prizes.   The building located right on Waimanu St. at the end of Pensacola where you would normally take a left to cross over Piikoi St. and go up the ramp to Ala Moana Center.  When you come to the intersection of Pensacola and Waimanu, it is the blue and white building directly in front of you.  You will want to unload your passenger(s) and beverages at the loading/unloading area, where there should be a security guard on hand, before you look for parking.  There should be some free but limited on-street parking available and, for sure, plenty of parking at Ala Moana Center or Ward Village's South Shore Market right across from the (or what used to be called the) IBM Building.  If you park at Ala Moana or Ward Villages, exercise some discretion as you would not want to be seen leaving these parking areas with "going-to-a-party" items (coolers, etc.), suggesting that you're not a shopper.  Stay tuned for more details as the Kickoff Meeting approaches.

 PAU HANA AT MOKU KITCHEN
660 Ala Moana Blvd.
October 20 (Friday) 4:00

All the Pau Hanas announced in this newsletter so far are new restaurants for the Club, and October's Pau Hana will be no different.   Not having been there myself, yet, all I can tell you is that the food has gotten rave reviews on the Internet, they have one of the first keg wine systems in the State of Hawaii, and Happy Hour is from 3:00 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. (So don't be too late).  Moku Kitchen is on the mountain side of Ala Moana Blvd. right across from what used to be called the Gold Bond Building and on the block just before the monstrous new building on the space formerly occupied by Comp USA.   Look for the green sign on the corner of the building.   See you there!

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

JULY 21 PAU HANA
PANYA BISTRO at the HOKUA

Ten Ski Clubbers made it down to the Panya Bistro for the July Pau Hana on Friday the 21st, and what a nice time (in my opinion) it was. The parking was easy (several options around Ward Village), Geoff had reserved a large square table outside which could seat twelve putting everyone within talking distance of everyone else, and the $5.00 happy hour prices for selected beer and pupus was "right on."  Looks, to me, like a venue we'll visit again and I, myself, might return to a lot sooner.  Good choice Geoff.

THE TRIP COMMITTEE

SECOND SKI TRIP FOR 2018
RUSUTSU, JAPAN
February 24 - March 4

A scant three weeks following the trip to Mammoth, the Ski Club is offering a second ski trip to Japan.  Rusutsu Ski Resort, our second destination, is the largest ski resort in Hokkaido, Japan and is a two hour shuttle bus ride from Sapporo Airport (CTS).   Rusutsu is known by skiers worldwide for its plentiful powder, long and wide well groomed runs,  and access to fabulous tree skiing.  The resort receives over 45 feet of snow annually, covers three mountains, Mount Isola and East and West Mountains,  with the highest elevation being only 3,300 ft.   It has 37 runs serviced by 4 gondolas and 15 chair lifts. Approximately a third of the runs are beginner, a third intermediate, and a third advanced to expert.  We will be staying at the Rusutsu Resort and Convention Center, a ski in ski out hotel with its own onsen, restaurants, game room, 4-D movie theater, swimming pool and wave pool.  The Resort also offers night skiing for those who can't get enough during the day.

The 7 day ski package costs as little as $2,300 including round-trip non-stop airfare with Hawaiian Airlines, 7 nights lodging with daily buffet breakfast, dinner and lift tickets. This "Early Bird Special" is a limited time offer so if you are interested contact Alan Teramura
alan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com    for further information. There is also a 10 day option for those who wish to spend more time in Japan that extends the 7 day Rusutsu trip by 3 more days at Kiroro, another nearby ski resort.
