PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
First, a "Schedule Alert:" The fact that we have activities scheduled for August and September without any General Membership Meetings, Pau Hanas, etc., doesn't mean that we won't be having them: It just means that we haven't had a July Board Meeting yet to talk about it. Just watch your upcoming newsletters and announcements.
Second, I'd like to welcome Millie and Eric Schatz and their sons, Evan and Dane, to the fold. I knew Millie back in the day when she was single and carefree, and now she has two sons away in college. Wow! If you were on the walk at Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens that Cathy Lau organized a few years ago, you might remember a couple running past us and calling out, "Hi Toby." That was Millie and Eric. I haven't seen them since, but here they are now: Members of the Club.
Talking about the past, some of you might know that I go hiking on Friday mornings with a small group (not Ski Club members). Well, for the past few weeks we have been joined by a guy named Thomas Edward Lawrence (Yes, his name is T.E. Lawrence: I'm not kidding). This past Friday he parked in back of me near the trail head, obviously noticed my Ski Club bumper sticker, and remarked that he had gone skiing with "us" a number of years ago. I asked, "Where," and he answered, "Mauna Kea." Turns out that in the early 70s he went up there with Dick Tillson and a group from Honolulu. They flew over, stayed at KMC, went up the mountain in a bus, and took turns driving and skiing. He recalled hearing that the previous trip to Mauna Kea had included the use of a portable lift which Dick had brought up the mountain but that it hadn't really worked out very well. I believe I've mentioned before that Dick was one of the founders of the club in 1949.
Don't forget to contact Gaye Chun, gaye@hawaiisnowskiclub.com if you are thinking of going to Mammoth in late January, 2018 or Alan Teramura, alan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com if you are thinking of going to Japan in late February. Some are thinking of doing both. I'm planning just on Mammoth, but I can't wait until then: I'm gong down to New Zealand for two weeks on August 1.
Hope to see many of you at the next General Membership Meeting at Ruby Tuesdays on July 6 and at the Panya Bistro on July 21 which should be a bit more conducive to friendly conversation than was the case this past month.
A hui hou kakou,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
RUBY TUESDAY
Moanalua Shopping Center
930 Valkenburgh St.
July 6
(Thursday) 5:00 P.M.
Hope you have recovered from the
Fourth of July and can make it to Ruby Tuesday-Moanalua for our July General Membership
Meeting. The restaurant is located at the Ewa end of the Moanalua Shopping Center, directly across Valkenburgh St.
from the Navy Marine Golf course where we previously held out meetings. We
will be in the covered lanai at the Ewa end of the restaurant. While the actual meeting will probably
not start until sometime between 5:30 and 6:00, come at 5:00 to start with the
grinds and the stories.

JULY PAU HANA - 4:00 PM
PANYA BISTRO at the HOKUA
1288 Ala Moana Blvd., Shop 116,
July 21 (Friday)
4:00 P.M.
At the suggestion of Marian Conroy, I stopped by on my way
home from work to check out the Panya Bistro and was pleasantly surprised by
their selection of drinks and pupus during Happy Hour (4:00 PM to 6:00 PM).
Everything is $4-$5, which includes pupus, beer, wine, Mojitos and Martinis.
The club has never been here as it is new and occupies the space the former PF
Chang's did in the Hokua Condominium. Validated parking is in the Hokua with
entrance off Queen St. near the corner of Auahi, or you
can opt to park next door in the parking structure for TJ Maxx and the South
Shore Market.
Panya opened decades ago as a bakery in the Ala Mo Center
and slowly progressed into a full service eatery opening their newest restaurant
in the Hokua. The food menu has something for everyone and most dishes have
definite Asian influence but do offer burgers and sandwiches. We will reserve
one of their large tables outside on the lanai. Look them up in Yelp or Trip
Advisor and you will see they are noted for their cakes, pastries and food. The
full service bar @ Happy Hour is a bonus.
See you there.

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
LANAKILA MEALS ON WHEELS
1809 Bachelot St.
Honolulu, HI. 96817
August 26 (Saturday)
Our ski club has volunteered for the Lanakila Meals-on-Wheels
on Saturday Morning, August 26. Numerous club members have volunteered at
Meals-on-Wheels in the past to pack or deliver meals, and this is a
well-attended community service activity.
If you wish to volunteer
to help us, please respond to
anita@hawaiisnowskiclub.com for an online application. Because the
Lanakila Meals-on-Wheels program works with the elderly of our community, all
volunteers must be screened at the behest of the City and County of Honolulu.
The Ski Club will host lunch for volunteers at the conclusion
of the activity.
Looking forward to a great turnout.

If you do not wish to bring a homemade chili dish (Zippy’s chili and other ready-made chili cannot be entered!!!), please bring a salad, pupu, side dish, or dessert to share. PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
JUNE PAU HANA
at
RESTAURANT 604
June 23
(Friday)
Having heard great things about Restaurant 604, especially the food, since it metamorphosed from Schooners where we had held many previous pau hanas and Membership Meetings, it seemed like a no brainer. NOT! Yes, the pupus were great (in my humble opinion) and happy hour prices were right: I got out of there for less than $10.00 for one beer (all my doctor allows) and a plate of pot stickers. If the pupus were that good, I would imagine that the dinner offerings, had I ordered, would have been equally as tasty. The average age of the clientele, however, was considerably less than that of the Schooners patrons, and the noise level, before the music started (Yes, they have live music on Fridays), was equivalent to what you would hear around you between sets at a rock concert or at a football game. Two of our members came and left without trying to find seats (Yes, it was crowded beside being noisy) and another three just sat for a few minutes and left. I left at 5:30 P.M., early for me, even though the musician was pretty good and was playing some of my favorite genre of music, blues. I'd like to try it again----but not on a Friday.

THE TRIP COMMITTEE
SECOND SKI TRIP FOR 2018
RUSUTSU, JAPAN
February 24 - March 4
A scant three weeks following the trip to Mammoth, the Ski
Club is offering a second ski trip to Japan. Rusutsu Ski Resort, our
second destination,
is the largest ski resort in Hokkaido, Japan and is a two hour shuttle bus ride
from Sapporo Airport (CTS). Rusutsu is known by skiers worldwide for
its plentiful powder, long and wide well groomed runs, and access to
fabulous tree skiing. The resort receives over 45 feet of snow annually,
covers three mountains, Mount Isola and East and West Mountains, with the
highest elevation being only 3,300 ft. It has 37 runs serviced by 4
gondolas and 15 chair lifts. Approximately a third of the runs are beginner, a
third intermediate, and a third advanced to expert. We will be staying at
the Rusutsu Resort and Convention Center, a ski in ski out hotel with its own
onsen, restaurants, game room, 4-D movie theater, swimming pool and wave pool.
The Resort also offers night skiing for those who can't get enough during the
day.
The 7 day ski package costs as little as $2,300 including round-trip
non-stop airfare with Hawaiian Airlines, 7 nights lodging with daily buffet
breakfast, dinner and lift tickets. This "Early Bird Special" is a limited time
offer so if you are interested contact Alan Teramura
alan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com for further
information. There is also a 10 day option for those who wish to spend more time
in Japan that extends the 7 day Rusutsu trip by 3 more days at another nearby
ski resort.
