CALENDAR OF EVENTS:
Additional events, such as concerts, hikes, excursions, may be added. Watch your email for possible updates.
Every Monday evening (except on holidays and, of course, during Hawaii Ski Week): 4:30 P.M. A group of ski club members and their friends play tennis at Keehi Lagoon courts, off Lagoon Drive. Stay in shape and share refreshments afterwards!
August 2 (Thursday) 5:00 P.M. General Membership Meeting at Ruby Tuesday, Moanalua Shopping Center.
August 24 (Friday) 4: P.M. Pau Hana at Nico's Pier 38 Kailua.
October 6 (Saturday) Morning time TBA, Volunteering to help pack meals and, perhaps some delivery for Lanakila Meals on Wheels.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
Don't be concerned at the big hole in our above schedule between August 24 and October 6. We will be having meetings and activities between those times, including a General Membership Meeting on September 6, a Biki Bike tour of Waikiki and, probably, Kakaako, probably a September Pau Hana, and, of course, the annual membership Kick-Off on October 4 which I mistakenly mentioned to you yesterday in an errant email actually intended for just the Board. We are listing the Lanakila Meals on Wheels activity this early because Anita and Bill need a headcount and need to the get the application out to those of you who will be volunteering but haven't done it before.
As of today, we have forty five signed up for Whistler-Blackcomb and forty one for Rusutsu with two more for Rusutsu in the "pipeline." Don't forget that August 1, a scant week from now, is the deadline to get your down payment in for Whistler-Blackcomb. I'm sure we'll be able to accommodate signups after August 1, but the cost may go up a bit.
With only six months to go before the Club ski season, it's not too early to start getting into condition. If you regularly, walk, jog, hike, bicycle, attend exercise classes, play tennis, or play team sports on a regular basis, you already have a head start. If you don't, it's time to get started. With this in mind, Geoff is going to be leading a bicycle "tour" of Waikiki and, I think, Kakaako on a weekend morning in early September (more details later), and you don't need to own your own bike for this: There are two Biki racks adjacent to his condo in Waikiki so all you'll need is your credit card to rent the bike. I would love to be leading weekend hikes, like I did in past years, but I need to lessen the risk to my right ACL graft (from accident at Mammoth) by avoiding potential falls and twisting injuries right now so I can ski next season. If anybody out there hikes, bikes, or does something else that helps to put/keep people in shape and wouldn't mind inviting the Club along, let me know.
See you at the meetings and activities.
A hui hou kakou,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
RUBY TUESDAY
Moanalua Shopping Center
930 Valkenburgh St.
August 2 (Thursday) 5:00 P.M.
Despite a possibility to the contrary, we are back to Ruby Tuesday-Moanalua for
our August General Membership
Meeting. Rumors that our old "haunt" at the Navy Marine Golf Course,
just across Valkenburgh street, would be re-opening turned to be just that,
"rumors." For those who have not been to Ruby Tuesday, it is at the Ewa end of the Moanalua Shopping Center
off Valkenburgh St. We
will be in the covered lanai at the Ewa end of the restaurant. While the actual meeting will probably
not start until sometime between 5:30 and 6:00, come at 5:00 to start with the
grinds and the stories.
TOBY
PAU HANA AT NICOS PIER 38-KAILUA
970 N. Kalaheo
Avenue, Kailua
August 24 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.
This is the old Pinky's Broiler which was in our normal rotation of Pau Hana spots for several years, got increasingly seedier, ultimately closed down, was taken over by Nico's, and resuscitated. We decided to give it a try last September, but only about six of us showed up. The food and atmosphere deserved more of us so we are trying it again. For those who are unfamiliar with the venue, it is located at 970 Kalaheo Drive at the intersection of Kalaheo Drive and Mokapu Blvd. If you are coming from Honolulu/Pearl City side via the H3 or Likelike and continuing down Mokapu Blvd. it will be on your right (Aikahi Park Shopping Center will be on the far side of the intersection on your left). You will have to take a right onto Kalaheo Drive and then a very quick left (if there is no traffic) or keep going down Kalaheo a bit towards Kailua town, turn around where you see a side street opportunity, and drive back to get into the parking lot. Of course, coming down Kalaheo from Kailua town, the turn into Pinky's is "mo easy." By the way, in case you are unaware of this, H3 has drawn a lot of Windward direction traffic away from Likelike Highway so getting over to the Windward side via Likelike is now relatively "painless."

COMMUNITY SERVICE
LANAKILA MEALS ON WHEELS
1809 Bachelot St., Honolulu
October 6 (Saturday Morning), Time TBA
Our ski club
will volunteer for the Lanakila Meals-on-Wheels (LMOW) on Saturday, October 6 to
pack and/or deliver meals to recipients of the program. Numerous club
members have volunteered at Meals-on-Wheels in the past several years so
this is a well-attended community service activity. If you wish to
volunteer to join us, please respond to Anita Hodges,
anita@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , who
will email you the online application which is necessary
if you have not volunteered for Meals on Wheels within the past two to three
years. Because the Lanakila Meals-on-Wheels
program works with the elderly of our community, all volunteers must be screened
at the behest of the City and County of Honolulu. Looking forward to a
great turnout for our community service activity,
ANITA AND BILL HODGES
PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
A UNIQUE HAWAII SKI CLUB PAU HANA
SAIL, AND
FIREWORKS DISPLAY
Hawaii Yacht Club
July 20 (Friday) 4:45 P.M. to sail,
6:45 P.M. for grinds and fireworks
"Malia," in Hawaiian, means calm or gentle waters. "Kai" means ocean. The name of the Withy's boat is "Malia Kai." The late afternoon experience on August 20, for those few of us who secured a "berth" on the boat, experienced anything but a "sail" on calm and gentle waters-------but it was exciting and lots of fun for most of us. Basically, we were hanging over the windward (the direction the wind is coming from) side of the boat, watching the scenery as well as the crew tend to the sails, as the boat, manned (and "womaned") by its experienced crew and piloted by our host, "Captain Todd," participated in the weekly race from Hawaii Yacht Club to the Diamond Head buoy and back. There were some moments of doubt at the very beginning as to whether the experience would happen when a piece of hardware holding the mainsail to the mast decided to break as the sail was being raised, but it was quickly replaced, and we got off, albeit a bit late. There was also a passenger (two of us) pileup at the turnaround in the process of switching to the other side of the boat, but nobody got hurt or thrown overboard, and we all got back in one piece. Following arrival back at the dock, we enjoyed drinks and pupus with the crew on the boat and then joined other ski club members at the clubhouse/restaurant for burgers, more drinks, and watching the Friday night fireworks. The last of us departed around 9:30 P.M. Mucho Mahalos to Todd and Malia for hosting us to an unusual and memorable Friday afternoon/evening and to Anita for coming up with the "bright idea" in the first place. You can go to the Ski Club Facebook page to see a video and some pictures of the "event."
