PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
As of our June 21 Board Meeting, we have thirty two Ski Club members signed up for Hawaii Ski Week at Whistler-Blackcomb in January and twenty one for Rusutsu in February. Although it is still early with regard to the signup deadline for Hawaii Ski Week I would encourage you to get your registrations and deposits in ASAP if you know you will be going. Blocking off sufficient numbers of airline seats and beds at a particular price is a bit of a "dance" every year for us and the travel agency, and the earlier our initial "guestimates" turn into reasonably accurate predictions, the less the anxiety there is for the actual "dancers" who are the Trip Committee, the travel agency, the airline, and the hotel(s). Also, please note that the deadline to be assured of "a berth" on the Japan trip is only a couple of weeks away (see below).
The decision to cancel the July General Membership Meeting was made by vote at the June meeting. Just so you know, we are looking into another possible venue for our August 2 meeting but already have reservations for Ruby Tuesday if it doesn't pan out. Our meeting locations are not locked in stone, and we welcome suggestions from the membership at large. "No be shy." Because of traffic issues, the Ewa (west) side of Honolulu is preferable.
"Mucho Mahalos" to the Withys for inviting some of us (those of us who can fit without sinking "da boat") for a sunset sail and the rest for a Pau Hana with fireworks watching at the Hawaii Yacht Club next month (see below). Can't wait!
Finally, I am saddened to report the recent, untimely passing of Ski Club member Rick Conroy. He, with wife Marian, not only came on our trips over the past several years but participated in a number of our regular "non snow country" activities. Rick will be missed. Our sincere condolences to Marian and family.
Hope to see you at our meetings and activities.
A hui hou kakou,

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
A UNIQUE HAWAII SKI CLUB PAU HANA
SAIL, AND
FIREWORKS DISPLAY
Hawaii Yacht Club
July 20 (Friday) 4:45 P.M. to sail,
6:45 P.M. for grinds and fireworks
Please join us on Friday, July 20 for a
special pau hana at the Hawaii Yacht Club. Malia and Todd Withy have invited ski
club members to join them for a sail on the Malia Kai, their 40’ sailboat,
followed by a simple pau hana meal of burgers and beer (other options available)
at the Hawaii Yacht Club, and ending with the Waikiki fireworks display.
For those who wish to sail with the
Withys, email Malia at
jm@jeanmalia.com to
confirm a space on their yacht. There are 8 extra spaces (in addition to the
regular crew) for ski club members, so it’s first come, first get to sail.
Please arrive at their slip (#446) by 4:45 pm since the boat departs promptly at
5:10 pm for the weekly Friday evening race. The sail lasts approximately 1 ¼
hours.
For
those who prefer to stay on land, you should arrive at the Hawaii Yacht Club
clubhouse around 6:45 and inform the person at the clubhouse door that you are
Withy guests. Our pau hana area will be on the bottom level of the Hawaii Yacht
Club clubhouse (this is NOT the Galley By The Sea, full service restaurant on
the top floor). The setting is very casual with outside picnic tables and a bar
and grill for refreshments.
The Waikiki fireworks show begins about 8pm (after sunset)
and can be viewed from the yacht club.
IMPORTANT: THIS PAU HANA TAKES
PLACE AT THE HAWAII YACHT CLUB LOCATED BEHIND THE PRINCE AND ILIKAI HOTELS. This
is NOT the Waikiki Yacht Club which is adjacent to Ala Moana Beach Park.
You MUST pay for parking (pay at the parking dispenser, an ATM-style machine,
and place the receipt inside your windshield). Do NOT park in reserved spots or
fail to pay for parking, because your car could be towed.
