CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

Every Monday evening (except on holidays and, of course, during Hawaii Ski Week), at 4:30 PM, a group of ski club members and their friends play tennis at Keehi Lagoon Courts, off  Lagoon Drive.  Stay in shape and enjoy a "careful social hour" afterwards.

August 4 (Thursday), 5:00 PM,  General Membership Meeting at Mangiamo by 604.  Please try to get there at 5:00 PM or shortly thereafter so you can get "situated" before we begin our business at 5:30 and conclude before the music begins at 6:00 PM.

September 1 (Thursday), 5:00 PM,  General Membership Meeting at Mangiamo by 604.  Please try to get there at 5:00 PM or shortly thereafter so you can get "situated" before we begin our business at 5:30 and conclude before the music begins at 6:00 PM.

October 6 (Thursday), 5:00 PM,  We are back to Rainbow Bay Marina, Pearl Harbor for the first new membership year Kickoff Meeting since COVID got in the way two years ago.  As with July 7, the food, probably the same basic menu, will be provided by the club so "pencil" this into your schedule now.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

It was great to see so many old and new members at Rainbow Bay Marina three weeks ago, and I'm happy to report that we plan to do it again this coming October at our annual new membership year Kick Off Meeting:  Same great venue, same great food.  We had been doing this every year until the constraints of the Coronavirus laid us low.  Due to the absence of events, as "old" members will recall, we extended all memberships through this year, but, except for those of you who have joined the club for the first time since last year's trip to Aspen-Snowmass, everyone else will need to renew this September for the 2022-2023 year which starts October 1 and runs through September 30 of 2023.  The Board recently decided to do away with partial year memberships, and we are now extending "spring and summer joiners" through September 30 of the following year as indicated on the digital signup form accessed through our website, www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com .  Yes, for those of you who were members prior to the pandemic and, therefore, have not looked, we no longer have a written form which you download and complete:  When you hit Join/Renew Membership on the home page, you get a digital form to complete and, at the end, after choosing whether to send us a check or pay by credit card (and then complete the credit card information) you just hit the red button at the bottom.  You will immediately receive a receipt for having completed the form, and we will get the detailed information electronically as well.  Of late, however, the credit card option has not been working for some of us:  The entry fields for the information are not active, and we have yet to suss out what is going on.  I personally can't get the active boxes anymore with either the Edge or Google Chrome browsers on my PC or with Safari on my iPhone, but I can get them with the Firefox browser on my PC and both Firefox and Google Chrome on my IPhone. "Go figgah!" Our treasurer, Jonathan, can get them with Safari on his Ipad.  So if you want the convenience of paying by credit card and it doesn't work, try another browser or device you have them.   If not, just hit the pay by check option,  and put your check in the mail which is a bit more work for both you and us but what the heck!   If any of you out there are IT geeks and have any theories on this, please let me know.  Maybe we'll get it figured out by the time you actually need to submit your renewals in September.  Finally, in addition to the upcoming General Membership Meetings and the Kickoff in October, we might be getting together for a Pau Hana or two so look for announcements via separate email.  Stay safe out there.

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
MANGIAMO BY 604
NAVY MARINE GOLF COURSE
943 VALKENBURGH ST.
August 4 and September 1 (Thursday) 5 PM

We're back to Mangiamo for the next two first Thursdays of the month for our General Membership Meetings and, although the meetings, themselves,  won't begin until 5:30 PM, we'd like you to get there a bit earlier so you can get situated and order your food and drink.    If you haven't yet been to Mangiamo, it is opposite the airport, off of Valkenburgh Street which runs between Nimitz Highway (under the viaduct) and Radford Drive.  It is on the second floor of the golf course's club house. See you there.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

PAU HANA AT
ALOHA LOUNGE
3435 WAIALAE AVE.
KAIMUKI
June 24 (Friday), 4:00 PM

About twelve of us showed up to the Aloha Lounge in Kaimuki in the late afternoon to early evening of June 24, but in contrast to what was "advertised," the later comers didn't get parking spaces in the lot:  Sorry guys.  This is an older, local bar with limited beer, wine, and food choices (think fried chicken, fried noodles, etc.), some rickety tables, and what appeared to be, outside of us, pretty much the domain of a number of regulars. Still, we made ourselves comfortable, the wait staff was attentive, and it was good conservation and some laughs for a late June Friday night.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING/COOKOUT
RAINBOW BAY MARINA
57 Arizona Memorial Drive
(next to Restaurant 604)
PEARL HARBOR
July 7 (Thursday) 5:00 PM

Somehow, the fifty odd members who had RSVPed didn't materialize for what was our first (sort of) post pandemic event in over two years, but the thirty five odd members who did were treated to the meaty delights of master grill chef Geof Chu along with ample portions of Chinese chicken salad, noodles, char siu, cubed pork, and dessert of key lime and chocolate mousse pie.  Also, despite the smaller than expected turnout, all of the food was either consumed or eagerly taken home by the end.  More important than the gustatory delights were the members, including some older members (think Fergusons) who showed up and the number of club tee shirts worn by so many.  It was also nice to meet and greet new members John and Nanci Miller, Kenton Eldridge, and Rick Nelson, who introduced themselves to everyone.   Also, in the absence of Trip Committee Chair, Alan Teramura, who was off with Karen, gallivanting around the world again, Linda Schewe provided an informative update on the Big Sky and potential Japan ski trips for next year.  When I left around 8PM, there were still eight to ten members sitting around to burn the "before midnight" oil.

FROM THE NEWSFLASH,
FAR WEST SKI ASSOCIATION:

SNOWSTORM IN AFRICA

A snowstorm dumped more than 3” snow at Afriski Mountain Resort, in Lesotho, southern Africa in recent days. The ski area now has a base of 16”. While we would all normally scoff at a mere 3” of snow, this is a BIG deal in Africa. Afriski is the only ski area in Lesotho, but one of 3 in southern Africa. The resort can accommodate about 320 people and offers a one-kilometer ski slope, and beginner’s slope, and operates during the winter months (June–August). Afriski also operates in the summer months and offers a variety of activities, from mountain biking, guided Enduro motorbike trips, paintball, hiking, trail running, and more.

PARK CITY UPGRADE PLANS BLOCKED

The Park City Planning Commission blocked plans for the mountain to upgrade their 6-pack and 8-pack chairs, planned to be completed for the 2022-2023 ski season.  The move was being done to eliminate the long lift lines, currently at those 2 chairs, and being able to move people quicker, and more easily up the mountain.  The city cited that the proposed lifts were not consistent with the 1998 agreement that governs the resort.  More review will be required in order for the changes to go forward.
