CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

Every Monday evening (except on holidays and, of course, during Hawaii Ski Week), at 4:30 PM, a group of ski club members and their friends play tennis at Keehi Lagoon Courts, off  Lagoon Drive.  Stay in shape and enjoy a "careful social hour" afterwards.

June 24 (Friday), 4:00 PM,  Pau Hana and possible Pub Crawl starting at Aloha Lounge, 3435 Waialae Ave. (Actually off of 9th Avenue right around the corner).

July 7 (Thursday), 5:00 PM,  General Membership Meeting/cookout with food  provided by the Club at Rainbow Bay Marina, Pearl Harbor (See below for details, and don't forget to RSVP.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Although this is the July Newsletter, as you can see from the Calendar of Events, our first item is a June activity, just a couple of days from now, in which we hope to make up for last month's fiasco.  As many of our parents told us, "If at first you don't succeed, try try again."

Also, as you can see below, ski trips to Japan this coming year are looking more and more probable, and registration forms may soon be available.  Also, the prices for the trips seem phenomenally inexpensive.  Alan tells me that the hotels and ski areas are anxious to welcome back visitors after the pandemic lockdown and seem to be setting prices to encourage this.  In fact, having just made my personal annual plans to ski Utah after our trip to Big Sky, Japan is less expensive, and that's even with my $50.00 senior season's pass for Alta.

I hope to see a good number of you at our General Membership Meeting/Cookout/Party on July 7, just two weeks and a day away from now, at Rainbow Bay Marina, Pearl Harbor.   Your annual dues ($25.00 or $35.00) not only pays our ongoing expenses (website, P.O. Box, various fees, etc.) but also pays for certain activities and events which we hold to keep friendships alive and appetites for snowsports whetted during the off season, and we have had little to no ability to do this during the last two years.   This will be making up for lost time.  Don't forget to RSVP to me, pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com  , or just reply to this email, to let me know you are coming and how many in your party so we know how much food to provide.

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

PAU HANA AND POSSIBLE PUB CRAWL STARTING AT
ALOHA LOUNGE
3435 WAIALAE AVE.
(actually around the corner off 9th)
KAIMUKI
June 24 (Friday), 4:00 PM

Unlike last month, unless there's a lava flow coming down from St. Louis Heights, this month's venue will be open when we arrive, and on the slim to no chance that it's not, there are plenty of alternatives within walking distance, which gave rise to the suggestion of a possible pub crawl for those interested. (There appears to be a micro-brewery almost across the street which always interests Toby).  This is right behind The Cutlery (former location of the famed Town Restaurant) on the corner of Waialae and 9th.  The Aloha Lounge is in the back, off of 9th, with plenty of free parking.  Hope to see you there.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING/COOKOUT
RAINBOW BAY MARINA
57 Arizona Memorial Drive
(next to Restaurant 604)
PEARL HARBOR
July 7 (Thursday) 5:00 PM

Come to our July General Membership Meeting for July, where the food will be "on the house," at Rainbow Bay Marina, Pearl Harbor, Cabana A.   Not having had the usual meetings during the "pandemic years" at which we would normally provide the food, we are doing it now to make up for lost time and to spend some of the resultant excess in our General Account.  Rainbow Bay Marina is the outdoor picnic area with cabanas on the right hand side (facing towards the ocean) of Restaurant 604, Pearl Harbor.    We have held our October Kick-Off Meetings and, at least, a couple of  Pre-Trip Packet Pickup Parties here in the past.  Also, for the first time in a long time, we will have club shirts available for sale so you can "show your colors" at futre activities and on our upcoming trips.  For those of you who unfamiliar with the area, enter Pearl Harbor off Kamehameha Highway as if you were going to the Arizona Memorial, take a right on the inner road (Arizona Memorial Place), and drive approximately 1/4 mile.  As soon as you go under the Ford Island viaduct, you are there.  This is BYOB, and please carry out your drink containers rather than depositing them in the refuse receptacles at the venue or we will forfeit the return of a $100.00 deposit we gave them for cleanup.  Please email me pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.comwith the number in your party, no later than Friday evening, July 1, so we know how much food to prepare.

PRELIMINARY PLANS FOR 2023 JAPAN SKI TRIPS

Mark your calendar for two great week long ski trips at rates similar to or below those quoted 3 years ago.

February 11-19, 2023 Sapporo Snow Festival and Niseko Resort

After a non-stop flight from Honolulu to Sapporo’s Chitose Airport, this trip will begin with two nights at a 3 or 4-star hotel in Sapporo, so you can attend the world famous Sapporo Snow Festival during both the day and night, when it’s the most spectacularly lit up. You can also enjoy eating and shopping in Sapporo’s downtown markets and restaurants. Depending on interest there will be an optional day trip to Tiene or one of the other local ski resorts just outside of Sapporo for the non-shoppers.

We will then take a private shuttle from our hotel to the Chalet Ivy, a 4-star boutique hotel located in Niseko Grand Hirafu,l for 5 nights. Niseko United is a mountain with 4 interconnected ski resorts: Hanazono, Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village and Annupuri. Niseko averages over 45 feet of the best powder on earth! For those who have skied Niseko before and want to get away from the crowds and try something different, we will have optional day trips from Niseko to Moiwa, the next mountain resort over from Niseko United and another optional day trip to Kiroro, a 50 minute bus ride from Niseko. Alternatively, you can ski the four resorts that make up Niseko United. Land package will include 2 nights lodging in Sapporo and 5 nights in Niseko, daily buffet breakfast, 4 day lift ticket in Niseko, round trip shuttle bus from airport to Sapporo and Niseko. On the last day, you will have the option to either take an airport shuttle back to Sapporo or you can extend your trip by taking a local bus 45 minutes away to Rusutsu and join the Rusutsu group for another fabulous 6 days of skiing. Total group land and air package prices will be available soon.

February 18-26, 2023 Rusutsu Ski Resort

After a non-stop flight to Sapporo, we will take a privately chartered bus for a 7 night stay at the 4-star hotel at the Rusutsu Conference Center. Ski three different mountains at the one of the largest and most popular ski resorts in Japan. Rusutsu is known for its long, wide runs and its tree skiing through bottomless powder. Like Niseko it receives over 45 feet of the driest powder you have ever experienced. Land package will include 7 nights lodging, 5 days of skiing, daily buffet breakfast, three dinner buffets, unlimited onsen entry and private shuttle bus to and from the airport. Land and air package prices will be available soon.
