PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
As I sadly watch my 401K dwindle along with a few of my other investments, I keep telling myself it has to start turning around soon. I know it will but when? However, there is a bright side to this gloom and as I surf the net looking for low airfares to Salt Lake City for my trip in January. I’ve noticed the fares are $100 lass than 4-5 months ago. Even the additional baggage charges have decreased. This bodes well for the upcoming ski season and if the weather cooperates? Who knows, this may be one of our best seasons ever. I know I will be planning a couple more trips after January.
I still keep getting inquiries on Ski Week 2009 in Japan, and as of this writing, there are still a few spots open.
Our Wine Bottling/Halloween and annual Pre-Thanksgiving Parties were fun and much Mahalo’s to the Jim, Mary Beth, Bill and Rebecca for being great hosts.
To close out the year our Annual Christmas Party, held in
conjunction with the “12th Annual Koko Marina Festival of Boats
Parade,” this party is always well attended and one of our most popular events.
Hope to see you.
Aloha,

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:
SERVING DINNER TO THE NEEDY ON THANKSGIVING DAY
November 27 (Thursday, 9:30 A.M.)
Helping the Salvation Army serve turkey dinners with all the trimmings is as much a part of our club as the annual Hawaii Ski Week. It's a time to wear our club shirts, reindeer antlers, and smiles, usually getting on the local TV news. You may see club members playing volleyball with inflated rubber gloves and just generally enjoying the festivities.
We start at 9:30 with a potluck breakfast tailgate near the parking decks, and
end up consuming the left overs after our volunteering jobs are done. A sign-up
will be circulated for the potluck.
The allotted 18 slots are full, but if you're around, stop by for the tailgate
breakfast. Parking is free at the Blaisdell.

ANNUAL SKI CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY
December 20, (Saturday, 5:30 P.M.)
Once again, Darrell and Rheta Large have graciously offered their
residence at 585 Kumukahi Place on Spinnaker Isle, Koko Marina to host our

one of our most popular events. Members need to BYOB and bring a dish to share
(Pot luck). The ever popular grab bag will take place and we ask that a
minimum $15.00 gift value be followed. ALSO, THIS YEAR, WE
WILL BE USING THIS OPPORTUNITY TO COLLECT SORELY NEEDED CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE
FOOD BANK FROM OUR MEMBERSHIP. BRING CANNED GOODS, RICE, AND OTHER NON
PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS WHICH YOU CAN SPARE. To get to the Larges,'
turn off Kalanianaole Highway onto Hawaii Kai Drive, proceed approximately .8
mile until you see Pepeekeo St. on the left: Kumukahi St. or the

HAWAII SKI WEEK, 2009
(JAPAN TRIP INFORMATION)
WANDI
RENTAL CELL PHONES
As Japan does not have the same cellular system as the US, our
cell phones will not work in Japan. If you are interested in renting a phone,
JTB offers cell phone rentals through the Cellhire USA website:
http://www.cellhire.com/jtb/eng/index.htm
Highlights are: any incoming call is free, even from the US; the accessory pack
includes the adapter which you can use in Japan; no voltage converter necessary.
For more information, check out the website. When you click "continue," you
will see items to be charged and waived. By clicking
"?" mark, another screen will be pop up and explain the details. Select
"Japanese Phone Rental" and the rest is self-explanatory.

AC TO USB PORT CHARGING
If you have items like MP3 players or PDAs which can be
charged from a computer's USB port, you can buy an AC to USB adapter at Radio Shack for
about $19.00 and charge them from an AC wall outlet. The adapter is just a wall plug with a USB port on the side. It is good
for 100 - 240 V and 50/60 HZ. All you need is a foreign plug adapter, available
at Wallmart or any number of other stores, possibly even Radio Shack, so that you access the AC plug
at the hotel. I used mine in New Zealand, where the
AC is 230 V, in conjunction with a universal plug adapter, this past
August, to charge my MP3 player without a problem.

LYON ARBORETUM TOUR
On Saturday, November 8, a small group enjoyed the 200 acre treasure that's
getting lots of attention for endangered plants. Our guide showed us exotic
plants in the spice section, native plants area, and the rain forest. We all
loved it, and plan to go back to explore another day when we have time to hike
to the Manoa Falls. It's beautiful!

PRE-THANKSGIVING FEAST/PARTY
We kicked off the holiday season with a real feast for our traditional
"Black Turkey" dinner at Bill Rothe's home. And, if you weren't
there....the turkeys really are black, and succulent. The
setting was stunning, nestled against the Koolaus sparkling from an earlier
shower. Inside, Rebecca Horne led us through a gallery of art that had us
all oohing and aahing. Rosanne Donohoe reminded us how blessed we
are, leading a circle of grace before we stuffed ourselves. Thanks go to new
member Arleen Gillin for all her help in the kitchen. No wonder it's said
that Thanksgiving is the best American holiday!
