PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving holiday.  As usual, I was with family in Florida and missed the opportunity to volunteer at the Blaisdell and attend the traditional pot luck.   A picture of our volunteers, at least some of them, is on the Hawaii Ski Club page on Facebook.  If you have not already friended us, just do a search on Facebook and you'll find it.

A host of mainland ski areas, including Mammoth, have already opened on a limited basis, and at least one of them, Snowbird in Utah, opened and closed a few days later:  It was too warm.  Pretty soon we'll have to add "Pray for cold weather" to our usual "Pray for snow."

Next week, Thursday, will be our last "regular" General Membership Meeting, held at the beginning of the month, before the ski trip to Mammoth.  The January General Membership Meeting will be combined with the traditional Packet Pickup Party on January 19, one week before departure.  In a reversal from past practice, in which the possible locations for the following year's Hawaii Ski Week were decided at the Farewell Dinner on the last evening of the trip, we will open nominations to everyone, not just those going on the trip, at the Packet Pickup Party. This will be an opportunity for you all, not just those going on the trip, to nominate destinations for 2019 Hawaii Ski Week If you have a destination you would like to nominate, you now have approximately two months before the January General Membership Meeting to do a little research and make a presentation at the meeting.  The area you nominate should have ski-in/ski out accommodations or pretty close to it, trails/slopes covering a wide range of skier abilities, and be within reasonable distance from an airport.

Finally, I would like to welcome those of our new members who did not receive a personal welcoming email from me and apologize to our renewing members for all of my harassing entreaties for "re-enlistment."  I will be updating the email list, to include only currently active members, within a few days.

Hope to see you at the General Membership Meeting next Thursday and at our best attended activity of the year (not counting Hawaii Ski Week), the Annual Christmas party, on December 16.

A hui hou kakou,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
RUBY TUESDAY
Moanalua Shopping Center
930 Valkenburgh St.
December 7 (Thursday) 5:00 P.M.

We are back to Ruby Tuesday-Moanalua for our November General Membership Meeting.  The restaurant is located at the Ewa end of the Moanalua Shopping Center, directly across Valkenburgh St. from the Navy Marine Golf course.  We will be in the covered lanai at the Ewa end of the restaurant.  While the actual meeting will probably not start until sometime between 5:30 and 6:00, come at 5:00 to start with the grinds and the stories.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS  PARTY
The Esplanade, 500 Lunalillo Home Road

December 16 (Saturday)
5:30 P.M.

Once again, Sylvia "Sam" Wright has reserved the recreation room/terrace at the Esplanade for our traditional Ski Club Christmas Party.  This is both pot luck and BYOB.  Also, if you want to participate, bring a grab bag gift with approximate value of $15.00 for the traditional gift exchange.   You will be given a raffle ticket, and when your number is called, have the option of choosing a gift from the "pile" or one that has already been chosen, thereby forcing the original chooser to choose from the pile again:  In previous years, the circumstances with some gifts have been beyond hilarious.  To get to the Esplanade, turn left off Kalanianaole Highway at Lunalillo Home Road, the last traffic light before the highway goes up the hill towards Hanauma Bay. Drive in the mountain direction approximately .6 of a mile and look for the looming white building complex on the left.  While parking is limited at the building (eleven guest stalls in the circle at the entrance)  there is normally plenty of street parking available on the other side of the street and on side streets off the other side.  The recreation area is right on the ground level beside the lobby.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

THANKSGIVING DAY COMMUNITY SERVICE

Sixteen members of the Hawaii Ski Club continued the tradition of helping the Salvation Army serve a Thanksgiving feast to our needy and elderly neighbors at the Neil Blaisdell Center.   We met at the usual spot for our pre-event potluck brunch, but were soon forced by wind and rain to seek shelter under the parking structure stairs. We enjoyed a good assortment of onolicious foods: ham & cheese sliders, lox & bagels, fresh fruits, lumpia, quiche, pumpkin pie, deviled eggs, etc. The club provided Starbucks coffee and others provided the mimosas.  After securing the potluck area, we walked into the briefing room, picked up our t-shirts, listened to the spiel about our duties, what not to do and what to do, then proceeded to the food line raring to go.  We’ve been volunteering on this occasion for over 2 decades and have found it to be a very rewarding experience. Sometimes we’ve been assigned as food runners, pie runners or plate fillers, but again this year we were waiters/waitresses; the most coveted position. As we served the less fortunate, we received in return warm smiles and heartfelt thanks. It is well-worthwhile giving this small bit of time to help others while giving thanks for all we have.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

HAWAII SKI WEEK 2018
MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN
MAMMOTH LAKES, CA.
January 26 - February 3, 2018

The Hawaii Ski Club’s 2018 trip will be to Mammoth Mountain from January 26 to February 3, 2018. The HSC will be staying at Mammoth Mountain Inn, a ski-in/ski-out lodging that offers both hotel rooms and condos right at the main base of Mammoth Mountain. The group is planning to fly in directly to Mammoth Airport, which is a short 20-minute shuttle to the hotel.  Please contact gaye@hawaiisnowskiclub.com for additional information.

THE TRIP COMMITTEE

SECOND SKI TRIP FOR 2018
RUSUTSU, JAPAN
February 24 - March 4

A scant three weeks following the trip to Mammoth, the Ski Club is offering a second ski trip to Japan.  Rusutsu Ski Resort, our second destination, is the largest ski resort in Hokkaido, Japan and is a two hour shuttle bus ride from Sapporo Airport (CTS).   Rusutsu is known by skiers worldwide for its plentiful powder, long and wide well groomed runs,  and access to fabulous tree skiing.  The resort receives over 45 feet of snow annually, covers three mountains, Mount Isola and East and West Mountains,  with the highest elevation being only 3,300 ft.   It has 37 runs serviced by 4 gondolas and 15 chair lifts. Approximately a third of the runs are beginner, a third intermediate, and a third advanced to expert.  We will be staying at the Rusutsu Resort and Convention Center, a ski in ski out hotel with its own onsen, restaurants, game room, 4-D movie theater, swimming pool and wave pool.  The Resort also offers night skiing for those who can't get enough during the day.

The 7 day ski package costs as little as $2,300 including round-trip non-stop airfare with Hawaiian Airlines, 7 nights lodging with daily buffet breakfast, dinner and lift tickets.  There is also a 10 day option for those who wish to spend more time in Japan that extends the 7 day Rusutsu trip by 3 more days at Kiroro, another nearby ski resort.

Unfortunately, as of September 23, 2107, the trip is, for all intents and purposes, "sold out."   To have your name placed on a waiting list in case of withdrawals, contact Alan Teramura, alan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com ,  for further information.
