CALENDAR OF EVENTS:
Additional events, such as concerts, hikes, excursions, may be added. Watch your email for possible updates.
November 2 (Thursday) 5:00 P.M. General Membership Meeting at Ruby Tuesday-Moanalua, Moanalua Shopping Center, 930 Valkenburgh St. Announcement, Etc. won't begin until 5:45 - 6:00, but members normally start arriving at 5:00 to eat, drink, and "talk story."
November 23 9:30 A.M. & 11:15 A.M. (Thursday) Our annual volunteer activity (11:15 A.M.) assisting the Salvation Army in feeding a Thanksgiving dinner (at brunch time) to the needy at Blaisdell Center. We also hold our own tailgate party (9:30 A.M.) for our membership at this event so everyone is invited whether or not they participate in the volunteer activity. Since the event(s) takes place in the morning hours, there will be plenty of time for volunteers and "just" tailgaters to come and get to their personal celebrations on time. Stay tuned for an official announcement and call for volunteers.
December 7 (Thursday) General Membership Meeting---very possible---stay tuned
December 16 (Saturday) 5:30 P.M. Annual Christmas Party at the Esplanade, 500 Lunalillo Home Road in Hawaii Kai. (Important: See article below)
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
I'll begin by welcoming new members Hazy Adames, Gregory Huey, Albert Lohf, and Laurence Rotkin to the "fold." If I've left anyone out, I apologize: The "official" listing may not have yet caught up with the "facts on the ground." If you joined toward the end of the membership year which was September 30, unless you paid extra specifically for the new year, you need to "re-up." You can find the application/renewal form on our website www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com under "Sign Up." Send the completed form and your check to us (Ski Club Membership, P.O. Box 3004, Aiea, Hi. 96701) for the new membership year which began on October 1. Some time in late November, I will be updating the emailing list to conform to the list of paid up members.
I was pleased to see so many people (over 50) show up for the annual membership Kick-Off meeting at Gaye's condo on October 5. About a week before the meeting, only half of the number that ultimately came had sent RSVPs, and I was getting a bit worried. In the end, the room turned out to be a bit on the small side for us: The deck area, as with the Post Trip party in February, may have been a better option, but--- live and learn. Thank you again, Gaye, for your hospitality.
Talking about hospitality, as I mentioned in the last Newsletter, Sam Wright has again invited us to her condo, the Esplanade, in Hawaii Kai, for our annual Christmas Party which, this year, is on December 16. Unfortunately, our party is one week later than the annual Festival of Lights Koko Marina Boat Parade. We were fortunate enough to get our party scheduled on the same date a couple of times, but it's always a role of the dice, and if we don't put in a reservation far enough in advance, especially around holiday time, we might not get the room at all. Finding appropriate venues for meetings and activities, especially free ones, even at restaurants, has been a problem for us for a few years now, and, apparently, from talking to a friend who is a principal in another organization, we are not alone in this regard. If you have or know of a location which might be suitable for Club meetings and events, don't hesitate to get in touch with me about it.
Plans for Hawaii Ski Week continue to unfold, and Gaye will be going up to Mammoth a day or two early to "scope things out." Those of us who have signed up for the total package (including airfare) have already been advised of the unforeseen United Airlines flight changes which do not affect our arrival date but do affect our trip home. I've said before and I'll say again, Trip Committee, especially Chair, is the hardest working job in the Club. Be sure to give Gaye a word of thanks when the opportunity presents itself: Even better, buy her a drink. (Heh, Heh!)
Finally, I'm sad to report that longtime ski club member Leah Cain has passed away. Our deepest condolences go to John and his family.
A hui hou kakou,

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
RUBY TUESDAY
Moanalua Shopping Center
930 Valkenburgh St.
November 2
(Thursday) 5:00 P.M.
We are back to Ruby Tuesday-Moanalua for our
November General Membership
Meeting. The restaurant is located at the Ewa end of the Moanalua Shopping Center, directly across Valkenburgh St.
from the Navy Marine Golf course. We
will be in the covered lanai at the Ewa end of the restaurant. While the actual meeting will probably
not start until sometime between 5:30 and 6:00, come at 5:00 to start with the
grinds and the stories.

TRADITIONAL THANKSGIVING VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
SERVING AN EARLY THANKSGIVING DINNER TO THE NEEDY
AND PRE-EVENT POTLUCK
Blaisdell Center
777
Ward Ave.
November 23 (Thursday)
Potluck at 9:30 A.M. Volunteering at 11:15 A.M. - 1:30 P.M.
This is the 47th Annual Salvation Army Thanksgiving Day
Dinner served at the Blaisdell Center and, at least, the 25th year in a row that
the Hawaii Ski Club has joined with over 1000 community members from a variety
of civic groups and schools volunteering to make this event special for those
people who are less fortunate. This is an event where “it feels better to give
than receive.” You’ll enjoy your family Thanksgiving dinner more after you have
served meals to the elderly and poor of our community. Although our
allotted 16 volunteer spots were filled during the Kick-off party, we are asking
people to sign a wait list. There are always last-minute cancellations, so
please sign up if you didn’t at the Kick-off party, and we will contact you if
there are last minute volunteer openings.
Although our club volunteers
for only 2 hours on Thanksgiving morning (11:15 to about 1:15) we have a pre-
event tailgate, beginning at 9:30 A.M., outside the auditorium, in the grassy
area between the parking structure and the arena, for all club members. This is an annual
tradition where we enjoy the fellowship of other ski club members before we
serve dinner. Every club member is invited to join this tailgate even if you are
unable to volunteer inside the auditorium, so please let me know (
anita@hawaiisnowskiclub.com )
if you plan to attend. THIS IS A POTLUCK, SO THOSE WHO ATTEND ARE
ASKED TO BRING A DISH OR REFRESHMENT.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY
The Esplanade, 500 Lunalillo Home Road
December 16 (Saturday)
5:30 P.M.
Once again, Sylvia "Sam" Wright has reserved the recreation room/terrace at the Esplanade for our traditional Ski Club Christmas Party. This is both pot luck and BYOB. Also, if you want to participate, bring a grab bag gift with approximate value of $15.00 for the traditional gift exchange. You will be given a raffle ticket, and when your number is called, have the option of choosing a gift from the "pile" or one that has already been chosen, thereby forcing the original chooser to choose from the pile again: In previous years, the circumstances with some gifts have been beyond hilarious. To get to the Esplanade, turn left off Kalanianaole Highway at Lunalillo Home Road, the last traffic light before the highway goes up the hill towards Hanauma Bay. Drive in the mountain direction approximately .6 of a mile and look for the looming white building complex on the left. While parking is limited at the building (eleven guest stalls in the circle at the entrance) there is normally plenty of street parking available on the other side of the street and on side streets off the other side. The recreation area is right on the ground level beside the lobby.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
PAU HANA AT MOKU KITCHEN
660 Ala Moana Blvd.
October 20 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.
At least twelve members and guests showed up at Moku Kitchen for our October Pau Hana, and I say "at least" because I had to leave early, and I don't know if any more came after my departure. Moku Kitchen is housed in the new SALT complex and seems to be latest hang for the upwardly mobile set. The food was of high quality, the beer and wine sections were top notch, and the prices were a bit on the high side to match the tone of the place. Although we managed to get permission to pull a couple of tables together for our group, the staff wasn't happy with this, and, in the 20/20 vision of hindsight, it would have worked out better if we had made reservations. Also, new member Laurence Rotkin came but couldn't find us: More of us ought to wear our "gang colors" (Ski Club tee shirts) to these events in the future. I'd like to go back there, some time in the future, when I can stay a bit longer and do more sampling of the food and beverage menu.

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
BEACH CLEANUP AT ALA MOANA PARK
Early Sunday, October 22, a group from the ski club wearing their HSC T-shirts arrived early to enjoy pastries and OJ before we “hit the beach” with other community groups for a Waikiki Aquarium-sponsored beach clean-up. While picking up small trash around Magic Island, we marveled at the early morning activities: couples taking their wedding pictures, people doing yoga on surfboards, swimmers and stand-up paddlers, karate classes, runners, fisherman and people-watchers. Go to the Hawaii Ski Club Facebook page to view photos of our volunteers in action.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
HAWAII SKI WEEK 2018
MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN
MAMMOTH
LAKES, CA.
January 26 - February 3, 2018
The Hawaii Ski Club’s 2018 trip will be to Mammoth Mountain from January 26 to February 3, 2018. The HSC will be staying at Mammoth Mountain Inn, a ski-in/ski-out lodging that offers both hotel rooms and condos right at the main base of Mammoth Mountain. The group is planning to fly in directly to Mammoth Airport, which is a short 20-minute shuttle to the hotel. Please contact gaye@hawaiisnowskiclub.com for additional information.
THE TRIP COMMITTEE
SECOND SKI TRIP FOR 2018
RUSUTSU, JAPAN
February 24 - March 4
A scant three weeks following the trip to Mammoth, the Ski
Club is offering a second ski trip to Japan. Rusutsu Ski Resort, our
second destination,
is the largest ski resort in Hokkaido, Japan and is a two hour shuttle bus ride
from Sapporo Airport (CTS). Rusutsu is known by skiers worldwide for
its plentiful powder, long and wide well groomed runs, and access to
fabulous tree skiing. The resort receives over 45 feet of snow annually,
covers three mountains, Mount Isola and East and West Mountains, with the
highest elevation being only 3,300 ft. It has 37 runs serviced by 4
gondolas and 15 chair lifts. Approximately a third of the runs are beginner, a
third intermediate, and a third advanced to expert. We will be staying at
the Rusutsu Resort and Convention Center, a ski in ski out hotel with its own
onsen, restaurants, game room, 4-D movie theater, swimming pool and wave pool.
The Resort also offers night skiing for those who can't get enough during the
day.
The 7 day ski package costs as little as $2,300 including round-trip
non-stop airfare with Hawaiian Airlines, 7 nights lodging with daily buffet
breakfast, dinner and lift tickets. There is also a 10 day option for
those who wish to spend more time in Japan that extends the 7 day Rusutsu trip
by 3 more days at Kiroro, another nearby ski resort.
Unfortunately, as of September 23, 2107, the trip is, for all intents and purposes, "sold out." There may be some limited accommodation available for four people who don't mind close quarters. To explore this or to have your name placed on a waiting list in case of withdrawals, contact Alan Teramura, alan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , for further information.
