PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

First, let me wish you all a happy and safe Thanksgiving, and, if our next Newsletter does not precede it (though I think one might), a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.   I know the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday will not be like the ones to which we are accustomed, but the important thing is to stay safe so that we can, in the future, be it next year or the year after, enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving again.

Talking about tradition,  I just got a postcard from Powder Magazine, to which I have subscribed for several years, that the last issue was "it," and they can refund my money or switch me to Men's Journal:  I asked for a refund.   I wonder if they were a casualty of the pandemic, i.e. less advertising income.   Back in 2016, I was subscribing to Skiing (my favorite), Ski, and Powder.  Skiing bit the dust in 2017.  Now we are down to one.

With Christmas right around the corner, those of you looking for a gift or two, maybe a gift for yourself, might want to take another look at our Hawaii Ski Club shirts which, I know, have been out of mind since we haven't been having events at which to display and sell them.  Pictures of our newer shirts are on our website,  www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com : Click on the "shirts" link.  We also have some of our older shirts for sale which are not pictured on the link.   You can contact Caroline, caroline@hawaiisnowskiclub.com to arrange to discuss and order shirts.

As of two weeks ago,  just a little over half of you 2019-2020 members had renewed for the new membership year.  Remember, due to the times in which we are living, we are making current renewals good through September 30, 2022:  Two years for the price of one.   Also, as of two weeks ago, ten of you going on the January 22 trip to Aspen-Snowmass were among the non-renewals:  Your membership needs to be active in order for you to go on the trip.  Sorry to be a nudge.

Without our own activities to announce and report in the Newsletter, below are some items from the most recent Far West Ski Association Newsletter which might interest you.  The Far West Ski Association is an association of ski clubs on the West Coast.  Although we are a "little" further west, we are a member club.

A hui hou kakou,

TOBY

Far West News Flash

NOVEMBER 2020

“NEWS”! ON YOUR MARK! GET SET! SKI!: Mammoth is open! Sun Peaks is open! So are several Colorado ski areas (Aspen Mountain, Breckenridge, and Keystone). With the current pandemic, please take heed and “Know Before You Go,” …long a backcountry mantra that will apply to all skiers and riders this year. Guests should visit ski area websites, social media and other channels to ensure they have the most up-to-date information on any COVID-19 protocols and understand what is expected during their visit. Colorado Ski Country’s COVID-19 webpage will be updated throughout the winter with tips, information and the most up-to-date resort protocols.

Many ski areas will be requiring prepurchase of lift tickets, ski school reservations, rentals and other activities and guests should check with the ski area they plan to visit before and leading up to their arrival. Ski parties will be allowed to load lifts and gondolas together at full capacity. Parties that are not together will have at least one seat between them on lifts. Up to two unrelated parties can load a gondola together up to 50 percent capacity. Parties that are uncomfortable riding with other parties will be allowed to ride as a single party. Again, check the website of the ski area you are planning to visit so that you “know before you go”!

“NEWS”! TELLURIDE SKI RESORT: Telluride will welcome NEW air service this winter with Southwest Airlines and Jet Blue adding flights into Montrose Regional Airport (MJT) starting in mid-December. Southwest will fly 2-3 times daily from Denver (DEN) and Saturdays and Sundays from Dallas Love Field (DAL). Jet Blue will operate from Boston Logan Airport (BOS) on Saturdays and select Wednesdays during the season. For additional information, visit www.tellurideskiresort.com. Telluride resort will feature 20 refurbished gondolas offering dining options in Mountain Village as well as expanded yurt and outdoor dining services across the mountain. Specific COVID-19 information can be found on Telluride’s website.

TRAILER FOR LATEST WARREN MILLER MOVIE

Ski Club member Steve Speilman thought some of you might be interested in watching the trailer for the latest Warren Miller ski movie online (probably a bit pricey) or in a theater in case some organization brings it here to Hawaii.   Apparently, a paddling club brought the previous movie here last year.  Maybe something we should do?   Anyhow, thank you Steve.  The trailer can be viewed through this website:
