PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
I have an admission to make. I am a HUGE
fan of the Rolling Stones. When I saw that K2, whose 50 year anniversary
corresponds with the Stones' 50 year anniversary this year, planned to put out a
limited commemorative edition all mountain ski with the Stone's inconic tongue
logo, I was all over it. Kind of Juvenile, yeah? Unfortunately, my
email correspondence with K2 revealed that the 171 cm. length of the shortest
ski to be released is too long for me. Ahh, well!!!! As you well
know (and I do) skis, due to materials,
construction, shape, size, and a myriad of other details, are as individual as
people, and even if the documentation and test results make a pair look like
they will work for you, whenever possible, you should try before you buy.
If it keeps snowing at Big Sky like it did yesterday, and you haven't yet, you might want to try out some skis with a wide enough mid section, tip, and tails, and maybe some rocker (reverse camber) on the tip and tails, to float over the powder. If you're renting, it should be easy to exchange skis, and if you own your own, renting for one or two days shouldn't break your bank. That's what I did a few years ago, and that's how I ended up with the skis I own now. I was tired of my thin waisted carving skis sinking in the powder and making me struggle to turn, and what a difference they made: It was a "Eureka Moment" to be sure, and it can be for you too.
Right now, my mind, and I'm sure yours, is primarily on sliding down the slopes (just a few days away), but once we get back from our ski adventures, we need to start planning for off (ski) season activities and next year's trips. Board elections will be coming up in April, and we are always looking for a "few good men" and women who are willing to spend an hour a month (most months) at a meeting and do a little thinking and organizing in between. If you are interested in running for Board, let our Nominations Committee Chair, V.P. Kevin (Okawa), know: He'll be glad to hear from you.
Meanwhile, I hope to see you on the hill next week.
Aloha,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
BIG SKY TRIP - HAWAII SKI WEEK
January 27 - February 4
Our "raison d'ętre," just a few days away. "See you on
the other side."
POST TRIP PARTY/FEBRUARY GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
The Esplanade, 500 Lunalilo Home Road
February 18 (Saturday) 5 P.M.
Once again, Sylvia "Sam" Wright has invited us to the Esplanade for the traditional post Hawaii Ski Week potluck. The party will be on the recreation deck or in a reserved activity room if it rains (but how often does it rain in Hawaii Kai?). To get to the Esplanade, turn off Kalanianaole Highway at Lunalilio Home Road, the last traffic light before the highway goes up the hill towards Hanauma Bay, drive in the mountain direction approximately .6 of a mile, and look for the looming white building complex on the left. Sam or someone else will be at the entrance to let you in and guide you towards the "rec deck." Bring your Telluride stories, photos, BYOB, and a dish to share. For those of you who did not go on the trip, please come as this will also serve/be in lieu of the February General Membership Meeting and will be your opportunity to participate in selecting a destination for Ski Week 2013.

BIG WHITE SKI TRIP
March 9 - 17
Although still two months away, the trip to Big White, in Canada's picturesque Okanagan Valley, is, unfortunately, closed.
EAT THE STREET
March 30 (Friday)
This is a food oriented Pau Hana
"Street Party" in Kakaako on the last Friday of the month: Food booths,
food trucks, good times, and maybe some BYOB action if a reasonable spot
presents itself.
Stay tuned for
more information as the time grows near.
VOLUNTEERING FOR SEAHUNT AT THE WAIKIKI AQUARIUM
March 31 (Saturday)
The Hawaii Ski Club has been supporting the Waikiki Aquarium with much needed (and much appreciated) manpower during their annual fund raising evening concert series and during occasional community and educational events, such as this one, held on their premises. Volunteers assist with such tasks as setting up and taking down tents, tables, and chairs; hanging posters; policing entrances; emptying trash containers; serving food; and helping to supervise ongoing activities. Though a couple of months away, the Aquarium is already requesting volunteers for SeaHunt, an ocean awareness program for children, on Saturday, March 31 which should last most of the day but not into the evening.
Please sign up with Christie Foytich alohalii@hotmail.com who will follow-up with more details as the event gets closer. Please sign up now as the Aquarium's new Volunteer Coordinator (not Christie, she's the Ski Club liasion) needs to know how many Ski Club members might be available for this and future events.
