PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Yes, the calendar of events looks a little slim for the next few months as we have two club ski trips in short succession, and I am sure that a good number of us will be planning additional trips to snow country before the end of winter.  I, myself, am planning to spend a few weeks in Utah, primarily at Alta, following the Club trip to Mammoth.  There may be more activities, however, to be announced later, for March and April.

As I sat down on Christmas Eve to start the "Message," Mammoth was reporting a base of 60" with 27 out of 28 lifts and 120 of 150 trails open. They are way ahead of Colorado and Utah.  Unfortunately, the temperature hd gone to 40 degrees and they were getting a mix of rain and snow so pray for colder weather and more snow.

I hope all of you who are going to Mammoth and/or Japan with us have been getting off the couch to exercise these past several months so that turns on the slopes won't be such a shock to your systems.  While it's kind of late to get started now, it will still help to do some daily stretching to get your body more flexible and some distance walking/hiking/biking/swimming to improve your stamina.  Enuff said.

We're hoping for a good turnout at Rainbow Bay Marina on January 19.  Remember, this is a Club event, not just a packet pickup party for Hawaii Ski Week, and we'd like to have a good number of you making nominations for our 2019 Ski Week destination.  This is the first time, at least in my memory, we are opening up the "first round" to the entire club.  Personally, I wouldn't mind going back to some places we've been before but would really be interested in new places that we, perhaps, have never considered.  If you're going to make a nomination, please do your homework to make sure that the destination you nominate is appropriate for the club:  A lot of this information is readily available on the internet.   Please RSVP me, pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , if you are coming so that we can be sure that "Geoff the Chef" provides enough food for us.

As always, we will be having our election for Board Members at the April General Membership Meeting, and Vice President Jonathan Carr will be making a formal solicitation for nominations in early February.  Already, however, two Members of our Board, both Paul and Renee "Fergie" Ferguson, whose terms are ending, have indicated their "retirement."  Paul has done an incredible job these past several years as our Secretary, Fergie has been invaluable handling our tee shirt ordering and sales at our meetings, and their "job performance" as well as their wise counsel at Board Meetings will be sorely missed.  We will need somebody to take over our tee shirt "operation" come April, and it need not be a Board Member although it would be convenient if it is.  I can't imagine what we would do without a "designated driver" for our club shirts and, perhaps, other logo wear.  If you are interested in taking this over, PLEASE call, email, or talk to me at our upcoming meeting on the 19th of January or on the Mammoth Trip.  This is an essential role that has to be filled.

Happy New Year and see you on the 19th.

A hui hou kakou,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

HAWAII SKI WEEK PACKET PICKUP PARTY/
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING/
NOMINATIONS FOR SKI WEEK 2019
Rainbow Bay Marina, Cabana C
(Next to Restaurant 604, 57 Arizona Memorial Drive)
Pearl Harbor
January 19 (Friday) 5:00 P.M.

This year, our Packet Pickup Party for Hawaii Ski Week will also serve as January's General Membership Meeting and the "call for nominations" for 2019 Hawaii Ski Week.  This is a partial reversal from previous years in which the participants in Hawaii Ski Week nominated destinations at the trip's farewell dinner, voted to select three, and the actual destination, from among these three, was selected by vote of membership following the trip.  The membership present at this meeting on January 19 will have the opportunity to nominate "candidates" for 2019, the participants on the Mammoth trip will narrow it down to three at the farewell dinner, and the membership, as in the past, will select a winner following the trip.  Nominations should have ski-in/ski out accommodations or pretty close to it, trails/slopes covering a wide range of skier abilities, and be within reasonable distance from an airport.  As in past years, the Club will provide the food, but you need to BYOB.  Also, glass containers are not permitted at Rainbow Bay Marina so please bring paper or plastic cups for your beverages.   For those of you who aren't familiar with the venue,  it's right near the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.  Turn off Kamehameha Highway towards the water as if you were going to visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right on the inner road (Arizona Memorial Drive) and drive .25 mile. After you go under the Ford Island overpass, you will see restaurant 604 on your left with the marina park just beyond it.  Cabana C will be on the far right, looking out at the water.   Please RSVP me, pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , if you are coming so we can be sure we don't run out of food.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
RUBY TUESDAY
Moanalua Shopping Center
930 Valkenburgh St.
March 8 (Thursday) 5:00 P.M.

Come to Ruby Tuesday-Moanalua for the first General Membership Meeting of the new year.  Note that this is being held on the second Thursday of the month rather than the usual first Thursday as on the first Thursday, thirty nine of our members will still be enjoying the snows of Hokkaido.  Come to share stories of the trips and, unless it hasn't already been announced electronically or by "Coconut Wireless," come to learn the destination chosen for our 2019 Hawaii Ski Week.  The restaurant is located at the Ewa end of the Moanalua Shopping Center, across Valkenburgh St. from the Navy-Marine Golf Course.  We will be in the covered lanai at the Ewa end of the restaurant.  While the actual meeting will probably not start until sometime between 5:30 and 6:00, come at 5:00 to start with the grinds and the stories.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS  PARTY
The Esplanade, 500 Lunalillo Home Road

December 16 (Saturday)
5:30 P.M.

As usual, the Ski Club's annual Christmas party was a huge success with ample ono food and drink, great camaraderie, and plenty of laughs with the "Secret Santa" gifting:  I lost of count of how many time the package of smoked salmon changed hands.  Towards the end of the evening, a group of members got together at one end of the room for some impromptu caroling. Those of you who didn't make it this time will have to put it on your list now for next year.  Mahalo, again, Sam for reserving your recreation area for the event.

MAMMOTH LAKES, CA.
January 26 - February 3, 2018

The Hawaii Ski Club’s 2018 trip will be to Mammoth Mountain from January 26 to February 3, 2018. The HSC will be staying at Mammoth Mountain Inn, a ski-in/ski-out lodging that offers both hotel rooms and condos right at the main base of Mammoth Mountain. THE TRIP COMMITTEE

SECOND SKI TRIP FOR 2018
RUSUTSU, JAPAN
February 24 - March 4

A scant three weeks following the trip to Mammoth, the Ski Club is offering a second ski trip to Japan.  Rusutsu Ski Resort, our second destination, is the largest ski resort in Hokkaido, Japan and is a two hour shuttle bus ride from Sapporo Airport (CTS).   Rusutsu is known by skiers worldwide for its plentiful powder, long and wide well groomed runs,  and access to fabulous tree skiing.  The resort receives over 45 feet of snow annually, covers three mountains, Mount Isola and East and West Mountains,  with the highest elevation being only 3,300 ft.   It has 37 runs serviced by 4 gondolas and 15 chair lifts. Approximately a third of the runs are beginner, a third intermediate, and a third advanced to expert.  We will be staying at the Rusutsu Resort and Convention Center, a ski in ski out hotel with its own onsen, restaurants, game room, 4-D movie theater, swimming pool and wave pool.  The Resort also offers night skiing for those who can't get enough during the day.

The 7 day ski package costs as little as $2,300 including round-trip non-stop airfare with Hawaiian Airlines, 7 nights lodging with daily buffet breakfast, dinner and lift tickets.  There is also a 10 day option for those who wish to spend more time in Japan that extends the 7 day Rusutsu trip by 3 more days at Kiroro, another nearby ski resort.

Unfortunately, as of September 23, 2107, the trip is, for all intents and purposes, "sold out."   To have your name placed on a waiting list in case of withdrawals, contact Alan Teramura, alan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com ,  for further information.
