PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

I wish everyone of you a happy and safe Fourth of July holiday next week.   Due to the low attendance last year in Hawaii Kai and the fact that the holiday falls in the middle of the week this year, which would have created logistics issues as well as, very possibly, a second year of low attendance, your Board decided to "give it a rest" at least for this year.   Note, however, that we will be having a General Membership Meeting at Seven Palms on the next day, July 5th, our usual first Thursday of the month.

Also, for you fitness buffs, note that we are having both a bicycle ride and a hike in July as well as a second bicycle ride in August: It's about time, yeah?   I don't know whether low attendance at Ryan's (Third Best Bar in Honolulu according to the just published Star-Advertiser survey) and the polo match in Mokuleia this past month means that a lot of us "usual suspects" were otherwise occupied or just interested in more active pursuits, but if you have ideas for activities which, you feel, would be a draw or are just looking for more company with activities in which you engage, let me know.   Horseback riding and golfing, neither of which would be free,  have been suggested?  What do you think?  Your comments would be welcome.

Talking about low attendance, as of last week, we had only twelve members signed up for Hawaii Ski Week in Japan this coming January.  Just like the last Ski Week in Japan, there is some interest from the Mainland in joining the Club for the trip, but I'm wondering where all the current members, who voted for it, are?

Hope to see you on the 5th at the General Membership Meeting and at one or more of our July activities.

Aloha,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Seven Palms Bar and Grill (formerly Sam Sneads)
July 5 (Thursday) 6:00 P.M.

Although we didn't have a 4th of July celebration this year, we can celebrate the next day,  the usual day (first Thursday of the month) for our General Membership Meeting.  Although the meeting begins at 6:00, come before 5:30 P.M. to take advantage of the "Sunset Specials" on dinners.

BIKE RIDE SERIES

The Summer Solstice has passed which means we are now officially on our way to winter! To start getting the body back in shape for the season, the club has organized a series of easy bike rides at select locations on Oahu.

Bike Ride #1: July 15, 10:00 a.m., Pearl Harbor Bike Path

An easy ride on the scenic Pearl Harbor Bike Path.  Meet at the Aiea Bay State Recreation Area (turn off Kamehameha Highway in Aiea at McGrew Loop and make an immediate left down the hill into the park).  The ride will start here and proceed toward Waipahu. Along the way you will have bird’s eye views of Pearl Harbor, including the Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge, home of the endangered Hawaiian Stilt (Ae’o). Bring your bike, helmet, water and sunscreen. After the ride we will have lunch at a location TBD.

PAU HANA AT LA MARIANA SAILING CLUB
TIKI BAR AND RESTAURANT
50 Sand Island Access Road
Friday, July 20, 2012 - 4:30 PM

"Nestled on the shores of Keehi Lagoon in Honolulu sits La Mariana Tiki Bar and Restaurant. Founded in 1957 by Annette and Johnny Campbell, La Mariana continues to serve as a historic reminder of the old days of Hawaii and has become a museum of Hawaiiana collected from many of the beautiful and most famous tiki-themed restaurants of the past. From the ground up, La Mariana is the last original tiki bar in Honolulu.  La Mariana welcomes the slow, unhurried pace of dining that has all but disappeared in Hawaii. Anthony Bourdain and Rachel Ray visits, and our crew Pau Hanas after the concrete pours while constructing the Sand Island Bridge have further sensationalized this relic that refuses to keep pace with progress."

To reach La Mariana, make a right turn at the 1st light once you are on Sand Island Access Road. The building is on your left once you get close to the water. Happy Hour is from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM with discounted drinks. Our club has been to this unique, rustic location on several occasions. Hope to see you there

MOANALUA VALLEY HIKE
July 28 (Saturday) 8:30 A.M.

Moanalua Valley is steeped in Hawaiian history.  This will be a technically easy but, depending upon the recent weather, possibly muddy hike along an old "carriage road," slowly climbing from the community park at the back of the valley to whatever point the group decides to turn around.  The carriage (let's call it a jeep) road is five miles long and reputedly ends with a stunning view, but I have only taken it a little past three miles which took me two hours round trip with stops to see the site of the old Douglas Damon estate (cement pad, cement stairs, brick oven) being reclaimed by the forest, to see a rock with ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs, and to admire the work it took, in the late 19th or early 20th century, to construct the seven arched bridges on the road.  The first mile of the hike, which, I suspect, is length of the original "carriage road" portion,  is replete with signage containing information on the history of the valley, the flora and fauna (Kevin take note), and similar information.  At about the three mile point on the road, a trail to the saddle overlooking the Windward side and access to the top of the Stairway to Heaven takes off (Jon "K" take note), but I passed on this as returning hikers advised me it was very exposed, a little "sketchy" at points, and was a seven to seven and one half hour round trip with slipping and sliding on the way down (not "technically easy").   To get to Moanalua Valley from either Honolulu or "Aiea side," get off the Moanalua Freeway at Exit 2.    If you are coming from the Honolulu side, take an immediate right up Ala Aolani St. (but no sign identifying it as such) into the valley.  From the West side, just follow the road paralleling the freeway and turn left under the viaduct at the bottom of the hill beyond Kaiser-Moanalua.  Take Ala Aolani up the valley to the Community Park at the end of the road where there should be sufficient parking either in the lot or on the street.  See you there.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITES:

PAU HANA AT RYAN'S GRILL
Friday, June 15

Thank heavens that some places don't change very much from year to year, and Ryan's is one of them:  Convenient location, tight but available parking, good selection of libations and "grinds," and fair pricing.  Eight members and guests, a little on the "light side" of the usual attendance, showed up to wish the Hodges a happy anniversary (who knew in advance?---I didn't) and listen to Geof regale us with the tale of his race car driving experience in Nevada a few weeks ago.  Ask Geof about it when you next talk to him: The smile stays on his face from start to finish.

POLO IN MOKULEIA
Sunday, June 24

On our last trip up country to polo, in November of last year, we had twenty eight participants:  This time, however, for one or more reasons (members on vacation, fee?) we had twenty one less.   The seven who came, however, were blessed with nice weather, ample "food and drink," and two matches:   The "Wahine Challenge" in which the Bacardi Girls thoroughly trounced Anuenue Farms 7- 2 and a second, much closer men's competition in which Team Equus squeaked by Wealth Strategy Partners 6 - 5.  At intermission, we were treated to the spectacle of six or seven sport parachutists landing on the polo field, coming in fast and slowing at the last second to touch down (anyone game to try?) and, at the end of the day, a blues band (same one as last time).  Thank you, Sandy, for the invitation and opportunity to sit in the upgraded VIP Section for a reduced price.  Hopefully, we can do this again with a bigger turnout.
