CALENDAR OF EVENTS:
Additional events, such as concerts, hikes, excursions, may be added. Watch your email for possible updates.
Every Monday evening (except on holidays and, of course, during Hawaii Ski Week): 4:30 P.M. A group of ski club members and their friends play tennis at Keehi Lagoon courts, off Lagoon Drive. Stay in shape and share refreshments afterwards!
June 1 (Thursday) 5:00 P.M. General Membership Meeting at Ruby Tuesday, Moanalua Shopping Center.
June 23 (Friday) 4:00 P.M. Pau Hana at Restaurant 604, 57 Arizona Memorial Drive, Pearl Harbor.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
I'll begin by welcoming new members, Michiro (Mich) Iwanaga and Albert Miral, and welcoming Ryan Saiki back to the fold. With Ryan, our membership is now up to 100, less than we had at the time of our first trip to Japan in 2009 (around 150 as I recall), but a bit more than we have had in most recent years. If you are a new member and have not yet received your free Club tee shirt, come to our General Membership Meeting on June 1 as Fergie will be there with the shirts. Our policy is a free tee shirt for each new membership, not new member, so family memberships only get one. A positive way to look at it is if you are a family of two, and you each want shirts, you can buy 2 for the price of 1.
June is normally the month for one of our annual volunteering efforts, The Special Olympics, but, unfortunately, signup was delayed due to circumstances surrounding our change in Community Service Committee chairs. By the time we put in our request, the only assignment left was for breakdown and cleanup the day after closing: We respectfully declined as it sounded like a lot of heavy lifting would be involved. Anita and Bill will be exploring other community service activities for the Club such as painting schools, helping serve meals to the homeless at IHS, and packing & delivering meals for Meals on Wheels (all of which we have done in the past) and beach cleanup (which we haven't done). If you have an idea for other volunteer activities in which we might get involved, please don't hesitate to contact Anita and Bill ( anita@hawaiisnowskiclub.com ).
As of this writing, activities are slim for June and July, but come end of the summer, we are looking at, maybe, a trip to the North Shore to watch a polo match, a pool party/beer and chili tasting at Bill and Anita's house in Aiea, and, get this, a Ski Club General Membership Meeting at the Honolulu Club with trained exercise instructors showing us proper stretching and muscle loosening techniques: We (the Club) will be paying for the instructors. More details TBA.
Hope to see you on June 1.
A hui hou kakou,

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
RUBY TUESDAY
Moanalua Shopping Center
930 Valkenburgh St.
June 1
(Thursday) 5:00 P.M.
Come to
Ruby Tuesday-Moanalua for our June General Membership
Meeting. The restaurant is located at the Ewa end of the Moanalua Shopping Center, directly across Valkenburgh St.
from the Navy Marine Golf course where we previously held out meetings. We
will be in the covered lanai at the Ewa end of the restaurant. While the actual meeting will probably
not start until sometime between 5:30 and 6:00, come at 5:00 to start with the
grinds and the stories.

PAU HANA
at
RESTAURANT
604
57 ARIZONA MEMORIAL DRIVE
PEARL HARBOR
June 23 (Friday) 4:00
PM
Restaurant 604 is the old Schooner's at Pearl Harbor
where we held our General Membership Meetings for a while. It is beside the
small park on the water where we held our last annual Kick Off Meeting and
several other functions. A few members have been there since it changed
name, management, and menu and have been complimentary about the
menu. For those of you who aren't familiar with the venue, it's right near
the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. Turn off Kamehameha Highway towards the
water as if you were going to visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right on the
inner road (Arizona Memorial Drive) and drive .25 mile. After you go under the
Ford Island overpass, you will see the restaurant on your left (ocean side) with
plenty of free parking. See you there.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
APRIL PAU HANA
NICO'S PIER
38
Despite the traffic, sixteen Ski Club members and guests managed to get themselves to Nico's on Friday afternoon, April 28, for pupus and libations, and those of us who were early learned that the protocols had changed a bit since our last "visit." From 4 P.M., they make you sit around the high circular tables on the mountain side of the bar and they take reservations for the lower, rectangular tables for dinner seating at 5:00 P.M.--------or you can sit outside, weather permitting: It didn't. When we explained that we were expecting around twelve people (with the number increasly swelling), they pulled together a bunch of high tables and switched us all to a lower one at 5:00, as promised. With the accommodating wait staff, good pupus, and not unreasonable (read a little high but not too) prices, it turned into a pleasant late afternoon. The last of us stayed still 6:15 P.M.

THE TRIP COMMITTEE
SECOND SKI TRIP FOR 2018
RUSUTSU, JAPAN
February 24 - March 4
A scant three weeks following the trip
to Mammoth, the Ski Club is offering a second ski trip to Japan. Rusutsu Ski Resort,
our second destination,
is the largest ski resort in Hokkaido, Japan and is a two hour shuttle bus ride
from Sapporo Airport (CTS). Rusutsu is known by skiers worldwide for
its plentiful powder, long and wide well groomed runs, and access to
fabulous tree skiing. The resort receives over 45 feet of snow annually,
covers three mountains, Mount Isola and East and West Mountains, with the
highest elevation being only 3,300 ft. It has 37 runs serviced by 4
gondolas and 15 chair lifts. Approximately a third of the runs are beginner, a
third intermediate, and a third advanced to expert. We will be staying at
the Rusutsu Resort and Convention Center, a ski in ski out hotel with its own
onsen, restaurants, game room, 4-D movie theater, swimming pool and wave pool.
The Resort also offers night skiing for those who can't get enough during the
day.
The 7 day ski package costs as little as $2,300 including round-trip
non-stop airfare with Hawaiian Airlines, 7 nights lodging with daily buffet
breakfast, dinner and lift tickets. This "Early Bird Special" is a limited time
offer so if you are interested contact Alan Teramura
alan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com for further
information. There is also a 10 day option for those who wish to spend more time
in Japan that extends the 7 day Rusutsu trip by 3 more days at another nearby
ski resort.
