PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
Despite the Vog, that day on Kailua Beach with fellow members compared to being told I had to pay to get access to Huntington Beach the following Saturday is just another reminder of “Lucky You Live Hawaii”. Even after telling the attendant the beaches are free in Hawaii and her letting me “slide”, my one and probably only encounter with the Pacific Ocean in SoCal left a lot to be desired. The water is brownish gray and COLD! No wonder the surfers all had full wet suits. Nuff Said.
It appears there is a good interest in Ski Week 2009 in Japan. I understand the trip committee may have a maximum number of spots available. So please pay attention to the announcements in the newsletters and e-mails and reply in a timely manner.
I am kindah disappointed that we were not able to pull off the Super Ferry Trip. The club is in need of an energetic take charge individual or individuals who can step up and organize the outing. We now have three condominiums available as lodging.
This summer we have many activities planned including the Comeback of Casino Night, Fourth of July in Waikiki, and end-of-season Annual Pool Party at the Hodges. This month’s Pau Hana at Ryan’s was well attended and I hope to see you at the future get-togethers.
Aloha,

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
June 5 (Thursday) 5:30 p.m.
After the May hiatus, we will be having
a General Membership Meeting again in June. Most current information on
the Japan ski trip will be discussed. Come a little earlier if
you want to take advantage of the Dinner Special (ends at 5:30 P.M.)
Last call for
Happy Hour is 6 p.m.
IGE'S RESTAURANT AND 19TH PUKA
June 13 (Friday)
98-761 Oihana St. ; Pearl City, HI 96701; 808-486-3500; Happy Hour: 5:00 – 7:00 PM.
With a name like Ige's Restaurant and 19th Puka, this month’s location brings to mind the type of watering hole you'd find at various golf courses around Oahu. In reality, the Aiea establishment is nowhere near the links or clubhouse of any local course. Located high above Moanalua Road on the corner opposite of Buzz's Steak House, Ige's makes its home in what appears to be a converted warehouse/retail space.
Even though you won't find golf spikes or bags full of clubs outside the front door, a "19th hole" mentality remains. From what I could tell during my many visits, Ige's is great for groups of friends and families looking for a quality spot to get some food and a cold one after a long day.
WHAT MAKES this spot appealing is the variety of drinking, eating and seating options available.
Looking for a comfortable spot to down a couple of beers after work? Grab a seat at the bar.
Out with the girls and want some pupus and martinis before letting a designated driver chauffeur you into town for a night at the clubs? There is a ton of space to accommodate you and all your drinking buddies.
Live entertainment is also part of the equation here on the weekends. Local jazz musician Robert Shinoda handles booking duties, and manages to get a nice mix of artists to perform. On one of the nights we stopped by, the music mix ranged from '70s soft rock to contemporary pop hits.
The food is typical local. Specials include their famous “Shoyu Pork”, the dinner portions are very generous, and the prices reasonable. So bring your appetite and I’ll see you there.

FLAVORS of HONOLULU
June 29 (Sunday): 11:30 AM - 4 PM
Abilities Unlimited will again sponsor "Flavors of Honolulu" on June 27, 28,
and 29, 2008 at the Civic Center (the grounds between Honolulu Hale <City Hall>
and the Municipal Building. Flavors of Honolulu is a replacement for the Easter
Seals' Taste of Honolulu, and features food from some of our most popular local
restaurants as well as great entertainment. This is a major benefit event for
Abilities Unlimited, which assists individuals with disabilities to realize their
full potential by providing them with community-based employment. Hawaii Ski
Club members have volunteered to help at this fundraiser for the past 15 years. Please join us in supporting this worthwhile cause. We have requested to work on
Sunday, June 29, during the morning shift (11:30 AM until about 4 PM) in the
wine booths. Volunteers receive a t-shirt, admission ticket, and $10.00 in
script. After our shift ends, we gather to eat, socialize, and enjoy the live
entertainment. We will meet near Skygate, the big, black, modern sculpture
in the middle of the Honolulu Hale grounds, and then proceed to the music stage
area. Bring a cell phone to locate ski club members in the crowd. If you
wish to volunteer for this year's Flavors of Honolulu charitable event, please
email Wandi as soon as possible (Click on Contacts
link above) so
that we can let Abilities Unlimited know how many of our members will be there
to help.

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION IN WAIKIKI
July 4 (Friday): 5 PM - 9 PM
Last year's Independence Day celebration in Waikiki was so enjoyable that we
decided it was a must-do event again. Accordingly, our president, Geof Chu, has again
generously offered us the use of his Waikiki condominium as a place to eat,
drink, and socialize on July 4th prior to viewing the annual, spectacular
fireworks display at Ala Moana. From Geof’s condo, it is a relatively short walk
to the beach where we will be able to watch the fireworks. Geof’s condo is
located at 430 Lewers, apartment 30 C, telephone: 921-9945. The building is on
the block of Lewers St. between Kuhio Avenue and Ala Wai Blvd. and, after making
the left turn from Kuhio, is on the left side of the street, at the junction of
Lewers and Manukai St. Look for a tan colored building with the address (430 Lewers St.) on a brown sign tacked to the wall. There are 11 guest stalls
available at 430 Lewers as well as in the building garage directly across the
street from the condo, which is also part of the complex. Additionally, there
might be free street parking available (because of the holiday) in the area.
Register your vehicle/parking stall in the lobby, ring up Geof’s unit (using his
telephone number above), and he will buzz you in. Bring something to drink, a
dish to share, and celebrate the 4th of July with us! Please
note that this event will
"replace" both the July General Membership Meeting and Pau Hana.

INTEREST HIGH IN 2009 JAPAN SKI TRIP
February, 2009
Interest in the ski club's Japan ski trip, planned for February 2009, is
running high. Responding to a recent survey conducted by the trip committee,
fifty-one members, family and friends expressed their desire to go on the trip.
This is an unprecedented amount of interest this early in the process. The
overwhelming majority of responders want to attend the Sapporo Snow Festival as
well as ski, and a large number also want to extend their stay in Japan. The
trip committee is continuing to work with various vendors to come up with the
best package for the club. More information may be available for the
June Membership Meeting at Sam Sneads and much more detailed information by the
time of the July Newsletter.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
SNOWBOARD FOR SALE
Craig Shaffer has an unused size 141 snowboard for sale. $250.00. Craig may be contacted at 261-5989.
SKI NEW ZEALAND THIS AUGUST
Anybody interested in a New Zealand Ski Trip this August? A 5 day day trip (really not worth it because it would only afford 4 days on the slopes) would run, roughly, $2,000 - $2,400 for airfare and room only(2 in a room). A 9 day trip (8 days on the slopes), if it could be arranged, would probably cost about $3,300 including lift tickets and meals. If interested, contact Toby (Click on Contacts or call 224-1065).
-----------------------------
Contributions from the membership to future newsletters are encouraged and will be greatly appreciated: Please e mail them to Toby (see Contacts) no later than 7 calendar days from the end of the month. Thanx much.
