PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
The first real bump hit the South shore last weekend, and next week’s trip to the west coast without having any ski resort fully open definitely tells me summer is coming. Kindah bummed but I’ll haul my clubs with me and it’ll all be good. Just like last year’s Diamond Head hike was the first for this local boy, the hike up the Koko Crater tracks was also a first. Lived on the East side all my life, but never tortured myself in that manner in a while. However, the good view and company of Ski Club members more than made up for the following week of aches and pains.
Sorry Sam about the Aloha Airline closure, but I lost over 100K miles also.
At April’s Annual Board Appreciation dinner at the Kirin Restaurant, it was decided that only active members in good standing can secure a place during future Ski Weeks. If anyone has any old Ski Club newsletters, awards and/or souvenirs or club related stuff, Jo Yee is now the custodian. If you have a chance, please turn them over to her.
Though it’s Mother’s Day Weekend, I hope that members join us on the Superferry trip on May 10, 2008. More details to follow during the coming week and I have already made arrangements to have our two condos available.
Aloha,
Geof

Time of departure on Saturday: 6:30 am. Entrance to terminal closes 30 min.
prior departure. Plan to be in the
terminal no later than 5:45, or you may find yourself locked out!
Adult Fare: $39.00
Fuel Surcharge Adult: (apparently waived for now)
Taxes & Fees $ 4.46
Total $43.46
____________
There is a 2 bag carry-on limit. Each bag must not exceed 18"x13"x12."
There is a 2 bag "Checked" bag limit. Each must not exceed 20"x22"x34" or one
bag no larger than 13'x32"x24".
According to the website, "Fees Apply" (for checked bags)
IMPORTANT: All passengers must present their Govt.-issued photo IDs when
checking in.
Parking: None provided at the terminal. Would suggest one of the downtown
parking garages or maybe even Dole
Cannery & then a taxi, or have someone drop you off. I myself came up with the
crazy idea of parking at the
airport & taking the #19 Bus the rest of the way, since I'll be flying back. Map
to the terminal is provided on
their website:
www.hawaiisuperferry.com
It is strongly suggested that you do your due diligence & check out the above
website, if only to read about the items
prohibited to be brought aboard. You may also want to check on the return times
to Honolulu, since the ferry has
now added a 2nd trip later in the day.
Time of Arrival in Kahului: 10:15 am
HAWAIIAN AIRLINES
The fares are currently $59 - $89 for the majority of the day, the cheapest
afternoon flight being a return departure
to Honolulu at 3:12 pm. As of April 22, there were 32 seats left on this flight.
CAR RENTAL
I made price comparisons for cars of varying sizes from intermediate to Minivan.
The prices range from $52 to $120 for the weekend. If there were 4 to a car,
that would mean $13 to $30 each.
If there were 3 to a car, it would be about $17.40 to $40 each. Any further
decisions about # of vehicles and how
many folks per vehicle will obviously need to be worked out when it is known how
many will be participating in
this event.
Members planning on going on the trip should be aware that they will need to
bring their own sleeping gear--sleeping
bag, blanket/pillow, mat or the like.
Here are a few suggested activities while on Maui:
MAUI OCEAN CENTER (AQUARIUM) Fee: $24 adults, $21 age 65 & up
There is also a kamaaina discount
www.mauioceancenter.com
KULA ALII LAVENDER FARM Fee: $12 for a guided walking tour.
Looks like it's free for self-guided tours.
www.aliikulalavender.com
SURFING GOAT DAIRY (Lower Kula) Boasting the Best Goat Cheese Spread in North
America
Daily Casual Tour: $7.00
www.surfinggoatdairy.com
SKYLINE ECO-ADVENTURES (zipline)
Unfortunately the Haleakala zipline is totally booked on our weekend. They do,
however have room at their 9:30
tour for the half-mile forest hiking part of the tour, if you may be interested
in at least taking photos of the other
lucky dogs who are actually doing the ziplines. For this you pay $40.63
The other site, Ka'anapali, has 8 ziplines & is a half-day trip costing $156.20.
Weight limit per person is 80#
to 260#. This trip includes a continental breakfast. As of April 22, there were only 5 openings
left on Sunday the 11th, at 7:00am.
So, if this has appeal for you, please consider making your own reservations
online at www.skylinehawaii.com
HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK
Would you enjoy viewing either an awe-inspiring sunrise (5:24 am) or a
spectacular sunset (6:29 pm) atop
Haleakala Crater? Perhaps include a hike with the adventure? Just be aware that
the drive time to the summit
is estimated to be 2 hours, just so you don't mis-time either event. Admission
to the National Park is $10 per car.
www.hawaiiweb.com/maui/html/sites/haleakala_crater.html
TEDESCHI VINEYARDS,on the slopes of Haleakala.
www.mauiwine.com
Your can tour the grounds on your own, and imbibe in a few wine samples in their
wine-tasting room.
'IAO VALLEY STATE PARK
This a very beautiful serene park with plenty of room to walk around the
grounds.

GOLF WITH GEOF CHU, and JIM & VEL KELLY
Please contact Geof for this activity.
UALENA by MAUI THEATRE: This theatrical performance was recommended by some of
our members, but alas, the
performances are only on weekdays.
These are only a few of the many things Maui has to offer, but could we ask that
you consider your top 2 to 3 favorites. and there will probably be further discussion while we're sailing to Maui. The Board
would appreciate a prompt & sincere commitment to this trip as soon as possible
& definitely prior to April 30th. Please e-mail your response to Geof,
geofchu@aol.com and Linda,

SKI WEEK IN JAPAN
February, 2009
The trip committee for this year has now been
formed, and these members are already hard at work requesting several proposals
from different companies for the Japan trip.
Your trip committee members, who may be contacted via links on our website, are:
Susan Murata
Dick Pickens
Wandi Sagum
Aaron Setogawa
Wanda Sowell
Myra Yamane
We have just received a quote from one of these companies, JTB, and will describe their proposal in detail via email, with a survey to find out how many of our members are seriously considering going with us on this ski trip to Japan. These numbers will impact the cost of the trip.

PAST EVENTS:
APRIL PAU HANA
On Friday, April 17 we had our monthly Pau Hana at Pinky's Bar and Grille in
Kailua. Although the Pau Hana was scheduled to begin at 5:30, we got an early start with several people there
by 4:30. They had the new Primo Beer on tap, and I drank a couple of them.
I counted around 18 people sitting at two tables.
Alex an East Coast Ski Club member, having recently moved to Hawaii, found
us via our Website and
joined us for the occasion. Hopefully, we will see him again at a future club event, and
he will join our
club. Although the Pau Hana could have easily extended beyond 7:30 P.M. we
had to end at that time to make room for another for another group.

I. Koko Head Tracks (March 29th)
It just took your breath away! The view from the top of Koko Head? Well,
yeah...... but first it was the hike straight up the railroad tracks outside the
crater. (pant, pant) Toby claims to be first to reach the summit, but I
saw Mike Basso on his way down as some of us were only halfway up! I know Susan
Murata was the first woman to summit. Linda Giers, Janet Miller, and Wanda
were far behind.
It seemed like we could see half of Oahu from the top, and we lingered until the
breezes made us chilly. Going straight down was KILLER on the quads. Legs
got so wobbly that crossing the trestle was hazardous, and most us suffered the
next few days every time we stood up and sat down. But was it worth it? You
betcha!!
II. West Lock Shoreline (April 12th)
We joined Menehune Marchers on a trek around West Lock and newer
parts of Waipahu with Dick and Claire Pickens. This was a Volksmarchers Hike,
which the Pickenses will join next at Crazy Horse Statue in South Dakota!
III. Full Moon Rise in Lanikai (April 20th)
And finally.....5 adventurous souls scrambled up the trail and
onto the bunker above Lanikai, and waited for the full-moon rise.
We ate ono munchies (thanks Jonathan Carr!), and waited. We took
stunning pictures, and waited. We chatted with other watchers, and waited.
Then we picked our way down by flashlight. Everything was
perfect............except for no moon!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
JO YEE, NEW SKI CLUB HISTORIAN
With former ski club president Gary Ota’s relocation to the
mainland and the upcoming departure of long-time ski club member, Jim Takara,
the ski club has inherited memorabilia from years past. In addition Carroll
Smith of Dover, New Hampshire, one of the original members of our ski club back
in 1966, happened upon our web site recently and was overjoyed to discover that
we are still in existence! He has generously sent us some real club treasures:
photos of original club members including Carroll and Dick Tilson, perhaps the
founder of the Hawaii Ski Club. Mahalo to Carroll for finding our club website
online!!! Forty years our ski club has been in existence. Thank you to the
original club founders including Dick and Carroll. Wouldn’t it be fun if we
could compile a history of the club with locations of past ski trips and the
names of presidents and members throughout the years??
Lucky for us, another long-time club member, Jo Yee, has volunteered to be the
new club historian and to assemble this club memorabilia. Jo probably takes more
photographs of club events than anyone else, and we’ve heard rumors that she has
an entire room in her house devoted to photo albums!!! Mahalo, Jo, for
volunteering to become our first ski club historian.
If you have ski club memorabilia from years long ago and don’t know what to do
with it, please ask Jo if she wishes to keep it.
