 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

We’re all back from a very successful Ski Week 2008 @ Whistler.  No one got injured except for a lot of sore muscles.  Even the weather cooperated and proved many naysayers wrong.  It did not rain once!!  It snowed four out of the six days I was on the mountain.  After my Tahoe trip and Whistler, I’ve never experienced this much snow.  I am still learning how to deal with it under my board.  AWESOME!!

The movement to get the club to Japan was successful and the membership that cast ballots, overwhelmingly chose Japan.  The Hawaii Ski Club is going to the Sapporo Snow Festival for Ski Week 2009.

Although we all want to get into the snow again before it melts away, the Board has scheduled a few events that the club has not done yet.  Included is a ride on the Hawaii Super Ferry to Maui and walk on Kailua Beach with a Party to follow at the home of two of our members.

We have four board members and a president whose terms are up in April 2008 and the club needs a few of you members to “step up to the plate” and help out.

Aloha, geof

 PAST EVENTS:

Hawaii Ski Week 2008 Race Results

What do you do when NASTAR isn't available at Whistler for the annual Ski Week race?  You devise your own categories for the timed race!   (For those, like me, who thought NA in NASTAR stood for North American, ...it doesn't.  It's for NAtional.)

Winners in the Elite Category of previous medal winners are: Steve Spielman       and Jackie Loui!

Winners of the Veteran Racers without previous medals are:  Jonathan Carr and Cathy Lau!    (Wanda)

Winners among the First Time Ever Racers are:  Loui Paresa and Anita Hodges!

David Imata has the best time for Snowboard Racers!

Congratulations all, and to all those who entered the race.

Comments about Whistler Ski Week

Randy Wakaki: I think Whistler has TWO GREAT mountains and a fun village to find good dining and nice entertainment for everyone.  It's a destination that I would go back to over and over.

Craig Shafer: I don't know which Ski Club ski trip is my favorite or best trip. But I do know that Whistler was the worst ski club ski trip for me. [Food poisoning, sick for 3 days]

Todd Withy: Whistler was a great trip, starting with the bald eagle side trip and there they were, right in front of us, to all the great lunches on the mountains with the snow falling.  Great hot tub also, or maybe I just needed it more than most!   Wonderful Ski trip.

Linda Giers: The scenery to and from Whistler along Howe Sound was breathtaking. It was a special treat to be able to stop and see the bald eagles at Squamish.

Lee Cataldi: WHISTLER 1993 in 2 sentences or less:

SENTENCE #1: Instant pau hana: The open-air apres-ski pubs were right there at the bottom of the slopes, making it so easy to do Hawaiian style hook-up.

SENTENCE #2: Memory Lane photos I have include the likes of Gary Oda & Kim (pre-Mr & Mrs); Apache (great hair but cannot recall his real name) & Eddie Ing; Frank engaged-to-Peggy-but-who-knew Pavao; and other dynamic duos: the Privon twins, Dan & Rene Rizzo, and Tom & Lori Nitta.

Kathy Ritter: Even though I didn't ski, I had a wonderful time in the Whistler/Blackcomb village. The dog sledding was a new and interesting experience.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:

TIO’S GARAGE AND TACO STAND
March 14, 2008  4:30 PMPAU HANA
404 Ward Avenue (Old Dixie Grill location)

The lease and ownership never changed hands, but constant competition coupled with diners' short attention spans were making it necessary to keep serving up something new.

Comfy Tio’s offers New Mex cuisine emphasizing chiles.  On the menu will be an assortment of tacos, enchiladas, and burritos as well as more creative fare such as tortilla soup poured at the table from a teapot, Serrano pepper and mint shrimp lettuce wraps, green chili stew, chipotle chicken wings and goat cheese nachos.

Speaking of happy, Tio's offers a whole roster of margaritas made with such uniquely Southwestern imports as sweet agave nectar and prickly pear cactus. There's an "acai" margarita as well. Served in mugs with straws and without salt, they're like slushes that pack an adult kick.  Happy hour is from 3:00 to 6:00 PM and after 9:00 PM till closing.

See you there!  Geof

TRIP TO MAUI ON THE HAWAII SUPERFERRY
March 29-30, 2008

IMPORTANT: Do NOT make Superferry reservations until we are certain that it will be sailing on this March weekend.  Currently the ferry is in drydock getting repairs.  If the Superferry is not operational, we will delay this Maui club trip to a later date.

Join fellow members for a day or weekend on the Hawaii Superferry.  For those who want to stay over night on Saturday, OCI has offered the use of two - 2BD/1.5BA condominiums in the Harbor Lights complex in Kahalui.   Currently the Ferry departs Honolulu Harbor every morning @ 6:30 AM and departs Kahalui Harbor every morning back to Honolulu @ 11:15 AM.  The introductory fare of $39.00 is good for travel thru June 5, 2008 and must be booked by March 31, 2008.   Airfares have already gone up after the beginning of 2008.

This trip is still in its planning stage and more details will be provided.  (Geof )

IMPORTANT ANOUNCEMENTS:

WANTED: TALENTED, WELL-ROUNDED, ATHLETIC, and /or GOOD-LOOKING  PEOPLE OR COMMITTED VOLUNTEERS!

It’s time to recruit members willing to offer their assistance in making our club the very BEST, FUN-FILLED, and MOST ADVENTUROUS Ski Club in Hawaii!!!!  You don’t have to be a great skier on snowboarder; just a person who is willing to volunteer time to help with activities.

New blood on the ski board means new ideas and different activities! IF EVERYONE VOLUNTEERED ONCE TO BE A BOARD MEMBER, WE WOULD BE ABLE TO SHARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES.  Don’t expect the same people to shoulder the load every year

The ski board needs people with varied interests and talents: a president, secretary, treasurer, and 4 board members who will work on committees such as planning local activities and major ski trips.

If you wish to volunteer or if you know someone who would contribute to the club, please contact any current board member, email Anita at Contacts, or attend the March general meeting. (Anita)

SAPPORO, JAPAN: HERE WE COME IN 2009!

By an overwhelming vote, ski club members selected JAPAN as the location for Hawaii Ski Week 2009. Plan ahead for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ski at 3 different resorts on Hokkaido and attend the annual Sapporo Snow Festival in early February 2009.  Much work still needs to be done with travel agents, but we do have the following information:

Ski-in, ski-out hotel with twin beds and buffet breakfast included. Round-trip airfare from Honolulu to Tokyo on United Airlines and round-trip airfare from Tokyo to Hokkaido (the northernmost island of Japan) on All Nippon Airlines (ANA), a United Airlines partner carrier, are included.

A United Lift Pass gives skiing access to all 3 resorts on the Niseko-Annupuri Mountain (Grand Hirafu, Higashiyama, and Annupuri are connected with each other at the top of the mountain and connected at the base by free shuttle buses).

*The hotel in Niseko Ski Resort (for 4 nights) and the hotel in Sapporo (for 2 nights) to attend the Snow Festival (this is just a preliminary itinerary)

*For those who would prefer to spend 6 (or even 7) nights at the ski resort rather than 2 nights in Sapporo, the travel agents should be able to arrange this alternative.

Mountain statistics:

Acreage: 2,191 acres

30% beginner, 40% intermediate, 30% advanced

Top elevation: 4,295 ft.

Base elevation: 984 ft.

Number of lifts & gondolas: 38

Lift hours: 8:30am to 9:00pm (Hirafu offers one of the biggest night skiing areas in the world.)

Number of runs: 57

Number of mountain restaurants: 17

Longest run: 3.5 miles

Annual snowfall: 39 ft. to 49 ft. of powder snow

More trip details:

These 3 Niseko resorts receive Japan's lightest and driest powder snow.

Snow reliability (constantly snowing in this area)

Virtually no lift lines

English trail maps, signs and information announcements; restaurants are now also offering English menus because of all the Australians and British who have discovered Niseko.

Niseko, being part of a volcanic range, boasts a collection of great onsens (hot spring baths)

"Hirafu's apres-ski scene rocks" (the hotel is located in Hirafu)

For the snowboarders, Hirafu has a half-pipe, tabletop jumps, and lots of natural quarter pipes and hits.

There are mogul fields and tree runs for the more experienced skiers.

Non-skiers will be offered several optional day trips for sightseeing.

Because United Airlines' contracted individual airfares are even lower than the group rates, it will be very easy to extend one's stay in Japan for those who want to spend more time visiting other areas of Japan.

Expect a UNIQUE skiing/snowboarding experience in 2009!!!  (Anita)

Contributions from the membership to future newsletters are encouraged and will be greatly appreciated:  Please e mail them to Toby (see Contacts) no later than 7 calendar days from the end of the month. Thanx much.
