PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
I don't know about you, but when I wasn't burning the chicken (sorry guys!), having to make announcements, and raffling gifts, I had had a pretty good time at the October 4th Kick-Off Meeting. Geoff's Condo's recreation area was a good "party" venue, everyone seemed to find the parking without a problem, the food was more than sufficient, and due to the fact that we had planned on a few (just a few) more participants than came, everyone went home with a raffle gift. Thank you, Geoff, for providing the venue, buying the food, and doing the cooking, with help from Kevin and hindrance (the burning) from me. Also, thank you, Sandy, for picking up the ordered Chinese food, Susan for buying all the raffle gifts and helping with the raffle "operation" (keeping me in line), Kevin for, as always, bringing in the tee shirts for sale, and everyone else who helped with set-up/tear down, and cleanup. Forgive me if I've forgotten to acknowledge someone. This is the first time, in my memory, that we've handled the Kick-Off in this manner rather than have it at a restaurant, and despite the somewhat lower turnout this year, perhaps due to the Waikiki location, which was really not as inconvenient as some may have anticipated, I think that we should do it this way again. Unfortunately, the free and plentiful parking will not be available near Geoff's next year so, if we are going to do it again in this manner, we will need to find another location.
Talking about other locations, with Darrell unable to host us this year as he has so many times in the past, Todd and Malia have generously offered their home on Kailua beach, off North Kalaheao Avenue, for our Annual Christmas Party on December 16. We are looking at cocktails and pupus on the sand, pot luck dinner on the lawn, and, of course, the usual Secret Santa gift giving. Besides your pot luck dish, BOYB, and gift, you'll probably want to bring your beach chair this time. More details, with directions, will be made available as the event grows near.
Lastly, when I last looked at the list of members who had not yet renewed, I noticed, surprisingly, that it contained the names of many of our "stalwarts" whom, I expect, will renew sooner or later but, hopefully, sooner. Our membership year runs from October 1 to September 30. We will keep everyone who hasn't renewed on the email list for a only a little while longer, so if you have been meaning to send in your check but haven't gotten around to it yet, do it SOON.
Hope to see you at the upcoming activities and General Membership Meetings.
Aloha,

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
OCTOBER PAU HANA
NICO'S AT PIER 38
1133 N.
NIMITZ HIGHWAY
October 26 (Friday) 5:00 P.M.
"Over the years, Nico's at Pier 38 has been a consistent
recipient of Honolulu Magazine's Hale 'Aina awards - including the Gold Award
for Best Seafood, also Honolulu StarAdvertiser's Oahu's Best Restaurants, and
has been featured on the Food Network's popular show, Diners Drive-Ins and Dives
with Guy Fieri. Recently, Chef Nico was selected by Hawaii Governor Neil
Abercrombie to represent Hawaii at the Great American Seafood Cook-Off held in
New Orleans. From downtown HNL, go west on Nimitz Hwy, pass the
intersection with
Alakawa Street, go one block & turn left at the light into
the pier next to Nico's. From the Ewa side, go towards HNL on Nimitz Hwy,
pass the intersections of Kalihi and then Waikamilo Road, and start to look
right for the large sign for Pier 38. The sign lists Nico's and
other companies. Turn
right to the pier area. The parking spaces are next to Nico's and also in areas
between The Ice Plant and Nico's.

HIKE UP WAAHILA RIDGE
November 17 (Saturday) 8:30
A.M.
Most Hawaii trails start in the back of parks or behind water tanks. This one, believe it or not, will begin from the driveway on Dole St. leading up to the U.H. faculty housing. We will meet in the parking lot of Kanewai Park which is just a bit down the road in the Diamond Head direction and across (ocean side of) the street. Just get off the H1 freeway, coming from either direction, at University Avenue, go up the hill on University, and take a right on Dole which will be your first traffic light, Come down Dole in the Diamond Head direction for .7 miles, and you will find Kanewai Park on the right just beyond the Center for Hawaiian Studies. If you are uncomfortable parking at Kanewai Park, because the signs say "For Park Users Only," there should be some available parking on the road. The first five to ten minutes of this hike will require climbing over rocks and steadying yourself with your hands while you find a good foothold, so while there are no vertical cliffs, it won't be a "walk in the park." The trail will change from some climbing over rocks to walking on an exposed trail through tall grass, to typical Hawaiian red dirt trail, to shady trail covered with pine needles (at the top), and we will end up in Waahila Ridge State Recreation Area at the top of St. Louis Heights. We will descend by another route which will be very rocky underfoot near the bottom but will not require any actual climbing. The elevation gain/loss will be approximately 1000 feet. It will be about 1.17 miles up and 1.24 down and should take us around 2.5 hours. There will be some stunning, panoramic views of Honolulu and a good view of Manoa and Tantalus so bring your camera. Also, I would suggest sunscreen and shoes with good treads, not tennis or other shoes with worn soles which might slip and slide. See you on Saturday morning, November 17.

THANKSGIVING VOLUNTEERS AND TAILGATE
Thanksgiving
morning
For a fulfilling and fun way to celebrate Thanksgiving, it's
hard to beat the club's tradition of helping The Salvation Army serve dinner to
the needy at the Blaisdell. We still have room for a few more volunteers, so get
your name in ASAP. E-mail
wanda10s@aol.com. Salvation Army does an outstanding
job of treating as welcome guests any and all who need a place to have
Thanksgiving dinner.
The day begins with a potluck brunch near the
parking structure around 9:30. Our shift is 11:15 - 1:15. Even if you can't stay
to help serve, join us for good eats and camaraderie. It's a great way to give
thanks, enjoy friendship, and feel good.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITES:
VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
THE INSTITUTE FOR HUMAN SERVICES
September 29
(Saturday)
Just before noon, on Saturday, September 29, seven ski club members, including "Yours truly," donned white hats, gloves, and aprons, and, assembly-line style, transferred food from pans to plates to serve lunch to residents and other needy persons at the Institute for Human Services (IHS) Men's Shelter opposite the K-Mart store in Iwilei. It was a pleasant as well as rewarding experience, we were there for less than two hours, and, afterwards, adjourned to the nearby Zippies for our own lunch with, as far as I could tell, unanimous agreement that everyone would be more than willing to do it again. Apparently, clubs and other community organizations are recruited on a regular basis to assist IHS at the lunch hour. Thank you Roy (Manzoku) for "putting this together."
