CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

Additional events, such as concerts, hikes, excursions, may be added.  Watch your email for possible updates.

October 5 (Thursday) 6: 00 P.M.  Annual Kick-Off Meeting for the new October 2017 - September 2018 membership year at Gaye's Condominium's recreation area, The Waihonua at Kewalo, 1189 Waimanu Street (at the end of Pensacola Street), 6th Floor Recreation Deck.  This is where we held our Post Trip Party last February. Please email me, pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , if you are coming and the number, including you, in your party:  We need to make sure we provide enough food for you all.

October 19 (Thursday) 5:30 P.M. Board Meeting (provisionally) at Henry Loui's.

October 20 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.  Pau Hana at Moku Kitchen, 660 Ala Moana Blvd. (across the street from the edifice previously known as the Gold Bond Building).

October 22 (Sunday) 8:30 - 10:30 A.M.  Volunteer Activity:  Beach cleanup at Ala Moana Park sponsored by the Waikiki Aquarium.  More details TBA.

November 2 (Thursday) 5:00 P.M.   We will probably be scheduling a "normal" General Membership Meeting on this date, back at Ruby Tuesday but this is TBA.

November 23 (Thursday) Our annual volunteer activity, assisting the Salvation Army in feeding a Thanksgiving dinner (at brunch time) to the needy at Blaisdell Center.  We also hold our own tailgate party for our membership at this event so everyone is invited whether or not they participate in the volunteer activity.  Since the event(s) takes place in the morning hours, there will be plenty of time for volunteers and "just" tailgaters to come and get to their personal celebrations on time.  Stay tuned for an official announcement and call for volunteers.

December 7 (Thursday)  General Membership Meeting---very possible---stay tuned

December 16 (Saturday)  Reserve this late afternoon-evening for our annual Hawaii Ski Club Christmas Party which, as in the past several years, will be held at the Esplanade in Hawaii Kai.  Whether or not this will be the same evening as the Boat Parade, we don't yet know.  Thank you, Sam, for the invitation.  Stay tuned for more details.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

SNOW REPORT:  Believe it or not, it has already snowed in Tahoe, Jackson Hole, somewhere in Oregon visible from Bend, and Aspen:  I've seen pictures and videos posted on Facebook.  Of course, this is just early season stuff, all or most of which will disappear before, later, coming down in earnest but--------------

Second order of "business" is thanking Board Member and Japan ski trip coordinator Alan Teramura for setting up the "self physical therapy session" at the Honolulu Club for our September General Membership Meeting.  I personally didn't think that many would show up, but I counted at least twenty-two members on the mats at one point when I nervously sought to take a break from the "punishing?" session:  It was like counting sheep--we may have had more.  I learned that I'm not as in good condition as I thought I was.  I also learned that rolling (what we were taught) is a highly effective way to loosen up and stay loose with minimal investment (a roller and, maybe, an instruction book).  Thank you again, Alan.

For those who expressed interest in going on Hawaii Ski Week, 2018 to Mammoth Mountain but haven't yet registered, time is a wasting:  The longer you wait, the less able you might be to get the room choice you would prefer.  For those who have registered, please note that the date for the final payment is November 20 (per my deposit confirmations from Ski.com).  For those who were thinking about the Japan trip but had yet to contact Alan, I'm sorry to report that the trip is, for all intents and purposes, full.  I say "for all intents and purposes" because, as of publication,  there is one room left that can sleep four:  Close quarters to be sure.   Contact Alan (see "Announcements," below) if you are interested in this room or you want to be placed on a waiting list in case of cancellations.

Hope to see many of you at our annual Kick-Off meeting at Gaye's "condo" recreation deck on October 5 (See details below).  When we held our post Jackson Hole trip party at this venue about eight months ago, we had one corner of the deck:  This time, we are getting our own room.  Remember, this is BYOB,  a desert item if you can, hopefully, a friend or two who might want to join, and your membership check and form if you have not already mailed it.   Also, be sure to RSVP me, pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com  with the number in your party so we know how much food to cook.

A hui hou kakou,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP YEAR KICKOFF MEETING
Waihonua at Kewalo

1189 Waimanu Street (at the end of Pensacola Street)
6th Floor Recreation Deck
Tel 380-3116

October 5 (Thursday)  6:00 P.M.

The Recreation Deck at Gaye's condo, The Waihonua at Kewalo,  was so accessible and comfortable for our Post Trip Party following Hawaii Ski Week in January that we have happily accepted her gracious invitation to go back for our annual new membership year Kickoff Meeting.   We will even get a private room this time.  For this meeting, as in past years, you provide your beverage of choice, your good cheer, and, hopefully, a friend or two who want to join.  We, in turn, provide the food and (a great many) door prizes.   The building is located right on Waimanu St. at the end of Pensacola where you would normally take a left to cross over Piikoi St. and go up the ramp to Ala Moana Center.  When you come to the intersection of Pensacola and Waimanu, it is the blue and white building directly in front of you.  You will want to unload your passenger(s) and beverages at the loading/unloading area, where there should be a security guard on hand, before you look for parking.  There should be some free but limited on-street parking available and, for sure, plenty of parking at Ala Moana Center or Ward Village's South Shore Market right across from the (or what used to be called the) IBM Building.  If you park at Ala Moana or Ward Villages, exercise some discretion as you would not want to be seen leaving these parking areas with "going-to-a-party" items (coolers, etc.), suggesting that you're not a shopper.  Please email me, pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , if you are coming and the number, including you, in your party:  We need to make sure we provide enough food for you all.

 PAU HANA AT MOKU KITCHEN
660 Ala Moana Blvd.
October 20 (Friday) 4:00  P.M.

All the Pau Hanas announced in this newsletter so far are new restaurants for the Club, and October's Pau Hana will be no different.   Not having been there myself, yet, all I can tell you is that the food has gotten rave reviews on the Internet, they have one of the first keg wine systems in the State of Hawaii, and Happy Hour is from 3:00 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. (So don't be too late).  Moku Kitchen is on the mountain side of Ala Moana Blvd. right across from what used to be called the Gold Bond Building and on the block just before the monstrous new building on the space formerly occupied by Comp USA.   Look for the green sign on the corner of the building.   See you there!

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

END-OF-SUMMER-PARTY
at
BILL AND ANITA HODGES' HOUSE
98-1006 Palula Way, Aiea
September 3 (Sunday) 6-9 pm

"It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall."  I could see the rain in the distance as I drove over Red Hill towards Aiea, the road going uphill turned into a waterfall for a minute, and a couple of us early arrivals helped wiping the water off the tables.  Then, as soon as we finished wiping, the rain started again.  Luckily, after the second installment of liquid sunshine, the air began drying up with better weather greeting most of the revelers.  The pot luck food was ono, and five members responded to the call to enter the Chili competition which was won by Bill and Kathy (a tie---so Bill has reinstated his title from the past---but barely) and Fergie took third.  (If you're a golfer, you'll understand why Fergie was third and not second:  I'm not a golfer so I don't).   Nobody accepted the invitation to use the pool except Bill who feigned a push and fell in backwards. It was good to see old Club members Lee Cataldi and Rosanne Donohoe as well as Jim and Vel Kelly (who had also come to the Pau Hana at Buffalo Wild Wings in August).  Though advertised to end at 9:00, it was still going, a bit, when I left at 9:30.  Mucho Mahalos to Bill and Anita for, after a several year long hiatus, inviting us once again to their "house on the hill" for a great Ski Club  party.

PAU HANA AT NICOS PIER 38-KAILUA
970 N. Kalaheo Avenue, Kailua
 September 22 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.

Sorry to report that only five (or maybe six) of us showed up at Nico's-Kailua for the September pau hana.  Participants included yours truly, Anita and Bill, their visiting daughter Audrey, Craig (who's a windward inhabitant), and, maybe, Mike Basso (another windward inhabitant) whom I heard was at the bar, but I didn't see him.  The place was light and airy, the pau hana prices for alcoholic beverages and pupus, were good, and I was sorry I had to rush back to town side to watch a Wahine volleyball game. I understand Bill and Anita stayed until 6:30.  In the past, we have had a number of windward folk, as well as some town siders, show up for windward Pau Hanas but not this time.  Oh well!

The Hawaii Ski Club’s 2018 trip will be to Mammoth Mountain from January 26 to February 3, 2018. The HSC will be staying at Mammoth Mountain Inn, a ski-in/ski-out lodging that offers both hotel rooms and condos right at the main base of Mammoth Mountain. The group is planning to fly in directly to Mammoth Airport, which is a short 20-minute shuttle to the hotel. THE TRIP COMMITTEE

SECOND SKI TRIP FOR 2018
RUSUTSU, JAPAN
February 24 - March 4

A scant three weeks following the trip to Mammoth, the Ski Club is offering a second ski trip to Japan.  Rusutsu Ski Resort, our second destination, is the largest ski resort in Hokkaido, Japan and is a two hour shuttle bus ride from Sapporo Airport (CTS).   Rusutsu is known by skiers worldwide for its plentiful powder, long and wide well groomed runs,  and access to fabulous tree skiing.  The resort receives over 45 feet of snow annually, covers three mountains, Mount Isola and East and West Mountains,  with the highest elevation being only 3,300 ft.   It has 37 runs serviced by 4 gondolas and 15 chair lifts. Approximately a third of the runs are beginner, a third intermediate, and a third advanced to expert.  We will be staying at the Rusutsu Resort and Convention Center, a ski in ski out hotel with its own onsen, restaurants, game room, 4-D movie theater, swimming pool and wave pool.  The Resort also offers night skiing for those who can't get enough during the day.

The 7 day ski package costs as little as $2,300 including round-trip non-stop airfare with Hawaiian Airlines, 7 nights lodging with daily buffet breakfast, dinner and lift tickets.  There is also a 10 day option for those who wish to spend more time in Japan that extends the 7 day Rusutsu trip by 3 more days at Kiroro, another nearby ski resort.

Unfortunately, as of September 23, 2107, the trip is, for all intents and purposes, "sold out."  There may be some limited accommodation available for four people who don't mind close quarters. To explore this or to have your name placed on a waiting list in case of withdrawals, contact Alan Teramura, alan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com ,  for further information.
