PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Summer’s gone and as usual a good time was had by all at Annual Labor Day Pool Party.  Perhaps too good a time for a few of us, but we paid the next morning.  One of the highlights of the summer for me was sitting on my board @ Pop’s and being buzzed by $75,000,000.00 aircrafts.  The waves even cooperated that Saturday afternoon.  Perhaps a club kayak outing is in order the next time the Thunderbirds are in town.  ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!  It’s good to see our tax money being put to good use.

September marks the end of the Membership year and I hope to see a lot of you at our Annual Kick-off Meeting on September 27, 2007 @ Sam Snead’s.  We can now look forward to SKI SEASON!  Some of us members are going up to Reno during New Years Week to get in some early season boarding and skiing.  If anyone is interested in going or hooking up with us, let Craig or me know.

Aloha,

Geof

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

JIMMY BUFFET CONCERT
Thursday, October 4

At the August 20th  pau hana at Campadres, a group of ski club members decided to attended the Jimmy Buffet concert at the Waikiki Shell on Thursday, Oct 4.  This morning (Saturday, July 21),  I bought 6 seats (the max allowed per order) for open seating on the lawn (these are the cheapest seats at $38.50 plus handling fees) on ticketmaster.com.   If you haven't attended an event at the Shell, it is always a great outdoor experience with BYO refreshments, seating under the stars and a view of the adjacent Diamond Head.

Buy tickets, if they are still available,  and join ski club friends and Parrot Head fans of Jimmy Buffet.

ALBUQUERQUE BALLOON FIESTA
 October 5-12, 2007

Ten ski club members will be leaving in early October for the famous Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We'll not only be watching 800+ hot air balloons rise en masse from the Balloon Park but we will also take to the skies with them! We're all looking forward to this incredible flight as well as to experiencing autumn in New Mexico!   Wandi

PRE-THANKSGIVING POT LUCK AT BILL ROTH'S HOUSE
Sunday, November 11

Bill Roth is, once again, hosting the ski club's Pre-Thanksgiving Pot Luck at his house in verdent, rural (don't mind the dogs, chickens and Pakalolo growers along the way) Kahaluu.   Honestly guys, this is a nice setting, not too hard to find, and the event has quickly become one of the highlights of the year.  Note that this is one week earlier than announced in the previous newsletter and is on the Veterans Day (Federal and local holiday) weekend.    Directions will follow in a separate e mail.

THANKSGIVING VOLUNTEERING AT NBC ARENA
 Thursday, November 22

For several years, the Club has provided volunteers on Thanksgiving Day to feed the homeless and less fortunate of our community at NBC arena.  This generally occurs earlier in the day, and therefore, gives the  volunteers ample time to attend family Thanksgiving meals and/or other personal activities planned for the day.   Official info has not yet been received at this time.  Please watch for email announcements as soon as the Board receives word from the Salvation Army.

CHRISTMAS PARTY AND BOAT PARADE
Saturday, December 15th 5:30 pm.

Our Club's Christmas Party will also serve as our General Membership Meeting.   It will be on  Saturday, December 15th to coincide with this year's Hawaii Kai Marina Boat Parade.  The parade starts at dusk so don't be late! Arrive at the home of DARRELL and RHETA LARGE, 583 Kumukahi Place, Hawaii Kai. Directions to their house as follows: Take H-1 EAST and continue on Kalanianaole Highway (HI-72 E) for another 4.2 miles. Turn LEFT  on Hawaii Kai Drive and go 0.9 miles. Then RIGHT on Kumukahi Place and go 0.3 miles to arrive at 583 Kumukahi Place, which will be on the left. Call either 395-6825 or email: darrellnrheta@aol.com if you have questions.

POT LUCK, BYOB, and bring your bathing suit for the spa! GIFT EXCHANGE: $15 minimum worth, and NO WHITE  ELEPHANTS!  This gift exchange, while traditional, is optional so members do not have to participate by bringing a gift. Of course, please remember that those "great" and "I wish I'd gotten that one" gifts mean that you need to bring something nice to exchange. If you can't think of anything, a bottle of alcoholic beverage always seems welcome.

WHISTLER, CANADA SKI TRIP
January 25 to February 2, 2008

While most of us will be going to Whistler B.C. for the awesome skiing and boarding, some might want to take a break during the week.  Also, a few might be just coming along for "the ride."  Whistler has enough alternative activities to keep everyone occupied 24/7.   Alternative activities available include snowmobiling, dog sledding, aerial sightseeing, bungee jumping, swimming (why come here to swim?), ice skating, and------what else?------shopping!!!!!

For apres skiing and evening entertainment,  Whistler is "PARTY CENTRAL."   Relax on the outside deck/patio of the Longhorn Saloon and Grill or the Garibaldi Lift Company at the end of the day to sip a cold one while watching your mates make their final turns to the bottom.   Merlin's is where it's happening at the base of Blackcomb which, reportedly,  has more pubs than  Whistler (hard to believe), and, according to pubclub.com, there are more pubs than trails in both villages (still harder to believe).  For later in the evening,  a trip to Whistler wouldn't be complete without, at least,  a brief peek in at Tommy Africa's, a disco which was happening back in the late 80s and in which one or two ski club members, during a previous trip, went "down for the count."     There's also dancing and bikini contests at Garfinkle's, another legendary Whistler watering hole.

For dining,  Whistler Villange contains over 90 restaurants which run the gamut from fast food to Japanese to French to Italian to Greek to Indian cuisine.

So much to do, so little time, but, fortunately,  we can rest on the slopes during the day..

Details of our Whistler ski trip may be found on our club website http://www.hawaiisnowskiclub.com/ under TRIPS.

PAST ACTIVITIES:

We had many AWESOME Club activities the past two months including a bike  ride across Ford Island with a stopover at the Pacific Air Museum, an End-of-Summer pool party with so many wines to taste that we had 3 winners (Kathy and Sam won in the red category and Svea for white wines), Disney's Lion King production which fascinated people of all ages, and finally a fantastic Kick-Off meeting with many prizes including airline tickets donated by President Geoff.  What more could you expect from a SKI club?!?!? And special thanks to all who planned or participated in club events.

IMPORTANT: PASSPORT RENEWALS

If you will be joining us on the January ski trip to Whistler or plan on traveling outside the USA within the next 6-12 months, apply as early as possible for either new or renewed passports since some countries, including Canada, require that a U.S. passport be valid for six months after a planned stay.

Travelers face the prospect of lines at local post offices and regional processing centers and should allow 10 to 12 weeks to receive a routine passport vs. an earlier standard of four to six weeks. Those who are willing to pay an extra $60 can expect to receive an expedited version in three to four weeks(up from 1-2 weeks)

Currently all Americans must carry passports when returning by AIR from another country, including Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

As early as January 2008, the regulations will be expanded to cover foreign travel by car or cruise ship. Processing delays stemming from the boost in demand have forced some travelers to postpone or cancel trips. Remember our trip is January 2008, so even if you drive over the Canadian border, you may have to have a US passport by then.
