As a reminder, September marks the end of the Membership year and dues for the next year are due again.  Our Annual Kick-off Meeting is set for September 27, 2007 @ Sam Snead’s.  I encourage you to take the time to attend a free dinner and renew your membership.  As an added incentive, those who renew and are present will be entered into a drawing for prizes which include free air travel.  Please refer to write ups for further info.

DISNEY'S LION KING

Sunday, Sept 23: Lion King performance and pre-show cocktails and/or dinner

Approximately 40 ski club members, family and friends have tickets for the Lion King at NBC Concert Hall on Sunday, Sept 23 for the 6:30 PM performance.  Prior to that performance we are organizing a pre-show cocktail and/or dinner "party" outside the concert hall for those with show tickets and for other club members who just enjoy partying. We plan to gather about an hour before the show (5:30PM) to have cocktails, a light meal and/or dessert (Wandi LOVES the chocolate desserts they serve) in front of the main entrance. Caterers serve a variety of dishes and refreshments before each performance.  In addition, by arriving early you'll find a good parking spot for a quick exit after the show.  There will be a suprise drawing for Lion King Items at the pre-show cocktail/dinner "party" so make sure you arrive early !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ANNUAL KICK OFF MEETING
Thursday, September 27

The biggest Hawaii Ski Club event of each year (except for Ski Week!) is the ANNUAL KICK-OFF meeting. This year the Kick-Off will happen Thursday, SEPTEMBER 27th at Sam Snead's Tavern. Food is provided by the club, but members are responsible for paying for their own beverages. Happy hour ends at 6PM so arrive early to take advantage of the reduced prices.

**** IMPORTANT: PLEASE RSVP TO ANITA (See e mail address in Contacts  or phone 486-8667) by SEPT 15 IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND so that we can order the correct amount of food.****

The KICK OFF Meeting is also time to renew your memberhship.  Complete the attached membership renewal form (it can also be downloaded from the club website).  Don't forget to include a check with your renewal form.  The membership fee hasn't changed in over 9 years, and the club uses this money for newsletter mailings to those without access to email, this kick-off party and other ski club activities.

One highlight of the Kick-Off meeting is lots of door prizes, and this year President Geof Chu will donate AIRLINE TICKETS! In addition to door prizes, Wandi will draw the winner of $100 from those members who have already paid in full for the Whistler trip.

Donations of door prizes from other members are always welcome!!!

****In order to qualify for door prizes, you must have renewed your membership for 2007-2008 and must be present to win.

NEW MEXICO TRIP TO ATTEND THE ALBUQUERQUE BALLOON FIESTA
October 5-12, 2007

So far we have 13 people who have committed to going on our club trip to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Please contact Wandi at (See e mail address in Contacts as soon as you decide to join us for this trip to New Mexico because the hotel situation is starting to get tight. Here again are some of the details of the trip:

For this coming October's Membership Renewal Event, we are planning a club trip to New Mexico to attend the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, an extraordinary spectacle of more than 700 brightly colored hot air balloons rising en masse into the autumn sky. The website below will give you all the information you could possibly want on this thrilling experience.

The festival will be held from October 6-14. This is an extremely well-attended event and several hotels in Albuquerque are already sold out. Those of you who are seriously considering joining us on this trip must let us know as soon as possible so that we can secure ample accommodations and rental cars for our group. We will be monitoring the airfares and will keep you informed about this but the hotel and rental car reservations must be done now.

We do not intend to stay for the entire festival but will possibly stay in Albuquerque for 7 nights (October 5-12). Some of you might prefer to stay for an even shorter time. Let us know what schedule you are interested in.

As an added bonus a wine festival as well as the highly regarded Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festival will be running concurrently with the Balloon Fiesta. This Arts and Crafts Festival occurs 3 times a year and is considered one of New Mexico's Top 10 Attractions.

We will also visit nearby Santa Fe and Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are considering activities such as a horseback ride in the surrounding area, hiking through Petroglyph National Park, as well as a hot air balloon ride. Some of us will also fly to see the Carlsbad Caverns in the southeastern part of New Mexico. As an aside for shoppers, our hotel is a block away from Coronado Center, New Mexico's largest shopping mall, as well as within easy walking distance to 2 other shopping centers, the new ABQ Uptown and the Winrock Center.

As if this isn't enough to think about, for the October 2008 Membership Renewal Event our club is planning on going on the Grand Canyon mule ride with an overnight stay at Phantom Ranch on the canyon floor. Other activities may include exploring the incredibly beautiful Antelope Slot Canyon near Page and riding through Monument Valley on horseback. The overnight stay at Grand Canyon's Phantom Ranch is so popular that reservations MUST be made a YEAR in advance. We'll present that trip itinerary soon. It's something to think about!

THANKSGIVING VOLUNTEERING AT NBC ARENA – November

THE WILDEST SHOW IN TOWN/AUGUST PAU HANA

We closed the door on summer with the final concert of the season at the zoo.  Now we can focus on winter sports, a new ski season, and a new club year.  Just as Palani Vaughn and Brother Noland inspired the audience to sing along and clap, Jake Shimabukuro had the crowd's silence and awe, especially in his rendition of Ave Maria.  The concert lived up to it's extravaganza billing.  Welcome back, former member Debbie Williams!  She joined us at the concert and on to the search for a nightcap in Waikiki.

IMPORTANT: PASSPORT RENEWALS

If you will be joining us on the January ski trip to Whistler or plan on traveling outside the USA within the next 6-12 months, apply as early as possible for either new or renewed passports since some countries, including Canada, require that a U.S. passport be valid for six months after a planned stay.

Travelers face the prospect of lines at local post offices and regional processing centers and should allow 10 to 12 weeks to receive a routine passport vs. an earlier standard of four to six weeks. Those who are willing to pay an extra $60 can expect to receive an expedited version in three to four weeks(up from 1-2 weeks)

Currently all Americans must carry passports when returning by AIR from another country, including Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

As early as January 2008, the regulations will be expanded to cover foreign travel by car or cruise ship. Processing delays stemming from the boost in demand have forced some travelers to postpone or cancel trips. Remember our trip is January 2008, so even if you drive over the Canadian border, you may have to have a US passport by then.
