PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
I just pulled my first issue of Powder, for the 2018 ski season, out of the mail. Is winter already around the corner?
Actually, I just got back from winter-----in the southern hemisphere. Skied thirteen days in New Zealand: Six at Treblecone, five at Coronet Peak, and one each at the Remarkables and Cardrona. There was more than adequate cover, but a number of warm days (mid 40s) and nights just barely above or below freezing made for crusty areas off piste some of the time. Still, it wasn't bad, and free skiing everywhere for 75+ made it even better. Had to pay for the busses to the ski areas (New Zealand doesn't have accommodations at the ski "fields" themselves), but not bad.
There I was, at the base lodge restaurant at Treblecone three weeks ago, when I heard my name being called. Who was it? George Privon, former Hawaii Ski Club member and very dedicated skier who moved to the East Coast several years ago. He was attending the three week Rookie Academy at Treblecone where aspiring ski instructors or instructors wanting to "up their game" spend time skiing with and receiving coaching from professional ski instructors from all over the world. This was his second year in a row at the academy. He hopes to become an accredited ski instructor within the next year and, I believe he said, retire from his 9-5 job and teach at Deer Valley. I think he said something about his brother, Lou, teaching at Deer Valley, but I'm not sure.
Speaking of Deer Valley, the mountain was just sold to a new conglomerate that already owns Mammoth, where we are going in January, Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows, and mountains in Vermont, West Virginia, and eastern Canada. One of the principals in the conglomerate also owns the Aspen ski areas. They apparently have visions of giving Vail Resorts a run for their money.
Back to us, if you are reading this via email, you are, of course, already a
member and can sign up for our late January trip to Mammoth by going to
A hui hou kakou,

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
HONOLULU CLUB
932
Ward Ave, 7th Floor
September 7 (Thursday) 4:45 P.M.
Our September 7 General Membership Meeting is one
everyone should plan to attend, even if you have never attended before. This
meeting is special in several ways. It will be held at the Honolulu Club
(www.Honoluluclub.com) on Ward Ave, one of the premier health facilities in
Oahu. We have arranged complimentary parking in the building and free access to
the facilities, lockers and showers. After having a light meal (on your own),
two of the Club's best personal trainers will give us an hour of instruction on
stretching exercises and techniques to massage your muscles and remove toxins
from your body. The exercises that you will learn are designed for you to do at
home or in your hotel room after a day on the slopes. Your body will be so
thankful!
Arrive at the Honolulu Club a little before 5 pm and take
the elevators to the 7th floor. Turn left outside the elevators and proceed to
the reception desk and identify yourself as a Hawaii Ski Club member. You will
be directed to our reserved area where you can order a drink and something to
eat. You may wish to either wear a yoga or workout outfit or bring a change of
clothes for you to slip into in the locker rooms. At 6 pm we'll meet our
instructors, who will lead us though various stretches and muscle massaging
techniques over the next hour. The Club has yoga mats and towels for your use.
Afterwards, you can sit at the bar and enjoy some more drinks, visit the sauna
or steam rooms, or go into the hot tubs ( indoor and outdoors). See you all
there.

PAU HANA AT NICOS PIER 38-KAILUA
970 N. Kalaheo
Avenue, Kailua
September 22 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.
The last time we went to this venue, in July of 2014, it
was called Pinky's Pupu Bar and Grill, had been on our normal "rotation" for a number
of years, especially to give our Windward members a break, but was looking
increasingly "seedier" with every year. Well, it has been taken over by
Nico's Pier 38 and after an introductory period of lunch only, is finally open for
Pau Hana and dinner. Time to give it a try. For those who haven't
been there at all, it is located at 970 Kalaheo Drive at the intersection
of Kalaheo Drive and Mokapu Blvd. If you are coming from Honolulu/Pearl City
side via the H3 or Likelike and continuing down Mokapu Blvd. it will be on your
right (Aikahi Park Shopping Center will be on the far side of the intersection
on your left). You will have to take a right onto Kalaheo Drive and then a
quick left (if there is no traffic) or turn around a little ways down Kalaheo
and drive back to get into the parking lot. Of course, coming down Kalaheo from
Kailua town, the turn into Pinky's is "mo easy." By the way, in case you are
unaware of this, H3 has drawn a lot of Windward direction traffic away from
Likelike Highway so getting over to the Windward side via Likelike is now
relatively "painless."

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP YEAR KICKOFF MEETING
Waihonua at Kewalo
1189 Waimanu Street (at the end of Pensacola Street)
6th Floor Recreation Deck
Tel 380-3116
October 5
(Thursday) Time TBA
The Recreation Deck at Gaye's condo, The Waihonua at Kewalo, was so accessible and comfortable for our Post Trip Party following Hawaii Ski Week in January that we have happily accepted her gracious invitation to go back for our annual new membership year Kickoff Meeting. We will even get a private room this time. For the meeting, you provide your beverage of choice, your good cheer, and, hopefully, a friend or two who want to join. We, in turn, provide the food and door prizes. The building located right on Waimanu St. at the end of Pensacola where you would normally take a left to cross over Piikoi St. and go up the ramp to Ala Moana Center. When you come to the intersection of Pensacola and Waimanu, it is the blue and white building directly in front of you. You will want to unload your passenger(s) and beverages at the loading/unloading area, where there should be a security guard on hand, before you look for parking. There should be some free but limited on-street parking available and, for sure, plenty of parking at Ala Moana Center or Ward Village's South Shore Market right across from the (or what used to be called the) IBM Building. If you park at Ala Moana or Ward Villages, exercise some discretion as you would not want to be seen leaving these parking areas with "going-to-a-party" items (coolers, etc.), suggesting that you're not a shopper. Stay tuned for more details as the Kickoff Meeting approaches.

PAU HANA AT MOKU KITCHEN
660 Ala Moana Blvd.
October 20 (Friday) 4:00 P.M.
All the Pau Hanas announced in this newsletter so far are new restaurants for the Club, and October's Pau Hana will be no different. Not having been there myself, yet, all I can tell you is that the food has gotten rave reviews on the Internet, they have one of the first keg wine systems in the State of Hawaii, and Happy Hour is from 3:00 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. (So don't be too late). Moku Kitchen is on the mountain side of Ala Moana Blvd. right across from what used to be called the Gold Bond Building and on the block just before the monstrous new building on the space formerly occupied by Comp USA. Look for the green sign on the corner of the building. See you there!

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
PAU HANA AT BUFFALO WILD WINGS
Pearl Highlands Center
(Above Sam's Club)
1000 Kamehameha Highway
Pearl City
August 24 (Thursday) 4:00 P.M.
Buffalo Wild Wings WAS a good Pau Hana location. Although the wings were not as reasonable as advertised, and the Thursday Special was for boneless wings (sort of like high class Chicken McNuggets which could be ordered with a variety of sauces), we easily moved a number of tables together to fit fifteen of the sixteen that came, the Pau Hana prices on brews was reasonable, and unlike a few other Pau Hana locations we have tried out in the past year or two, we could actually hear ourselves talk. Also, BWW turned out to be not as crowded as we expected. A good Thursday afternoon was had by all. I could see us putting this in the "rotation." Thank you Kathy (Mulledy) for spearheading our visit to Buffalo Wild Wings-Pearl City.

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
LANAKILA MEALS ON WHEELS
1809 Bachelot St.
Honolulu, Hi. 96817
August 26 (Saturday) 7:30 A.M.
Fifteen eager Ski Club members turned out in the early hours of Saturday morning, August 26 to pack meals for later delivery to needy and/or disabled seniors signed up for the Meals on Wheels program. The program delivers a week's worth (seven microwaveable meals) or a partial week's worth (five microwaveable meals) to clients, and it was our job to assemble the meals, already prepared in shrink wrap covered disposable plates, into stacks for delivery beginning Monday morning. Members assigned to the walk-in refrigerators pulled the meals onto rolling tables and rolled the tables out to the assembly room where other members assembled the differing meals into stacks of seven or five and placed the stacks onto tables where they were "bagged" by remaining members. It was a real factory operation, and by 9:45 A.M., a scant one hour, forty-five minutes after we began, we had bagged seven thousand meals, an entire week's worth, for later delivery. Following the activity, eight of us went to Kam Bowl at Kamehameha Shopping Center for an early lunch. This has turned out to be a popular volunteer activity and, I'm sure, will be repeated next year.

THE TRIP COMMITTEE
SECOND SKI TRIP FOR 2018
RUSUTSU, JAPAN
February 24 - March 4
A scant three weeks following the trip to Mammoth, the Ski
Club is offering a second ski trip to Japan. Rusutsu Ski Resort, our
second destination,
is the largest ski resort in Hokkaido, Japan and is a two hour shuttle bus ride
from Sapporo Airport (CTS). Rusutsu is known by skiers worldwide for
its plentiful powder, long and wide well groomed runs, and access to
fabulous tree skiing. The resort receives over 45 feet of snow annually,
covers three mountains, Mount Isola and East and West Mountains, with the
highest elevation being only 3,300 ft. It has 37 runs serviced by 4
gondolas and 15 chair lifts. Approximately a third of the runs are beginner, a
third intermediate, and a third advanced to expert. We will be staying at
the Rusutsu Resort and Convention Center, a ski in ski out hotel with its own
onsen, restaurants, game room, 4-D movie theater, swimming pool and wave pool.
The Resort also offers night skiing for those who can't get enough during the
day.
The 7 day ski package costs as little as $2,300 including round-trip
non-stop airfare with Hawaiian Airlines, 7 nights lodging with daily buffet
breakfast, dinner and lift tickets. This "Early Bird Special" is a limited time
offer so if you are interested contact Alan Teramura
alan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com for further
information. There is also a 10 day option for those who wish to spend more time
in Japan that extends the 7 day Rusutsu trip by 3 more days at Kiroro, another nearby
ski resort.
