CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

Every Monday evening (except on holidays and, of course, during Hawaii Ski Week), at 4:30 P.M., a group of ski club members and their friends play tennis at Keehi Lagoon Courts, off  Lagoon Drive.  Stay in shape and enjoy a "careful social hour" afterwards.

October 7 (Thursday) 5:00 PM (Meeting at 5:45)  General Membership Meeting at Mangiamo by 604 in lieu of our Annual Kickoff Meeting at Rainbow Bay Marina which has been cancelled

November 4 (Thursday) 5:00 PM (Meeting at 5:45)  General Membership Meeting at Mangiamo by 604.

December 2 (Thursday) 5:00 PM (Meeting at 5:45)  General Membership Meeting at Mangiamo by 604.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

It was nice to see some of you mask to mask as well as face to face at Mangiamo on September 2 for our first General Membership Meeting in a looooooong time.  Although we had a few less than the 20 who had RSVP'd that they were coming, that was understandable inasmuch as it was only a few days after local government had re-imposed stricter COVID rules for gatherings (which did not significantly affect outdoor restaurant venues like Mangiamo has).   Hope to see more of you on October 7, and if you are coming, be sure to RSVP Anita so we can let the restaurant know how many tables to set up.   Also, Mangiamo, although on military property, will be enforcing the same pandemic related entry requirements as restaurants elsewhere in Hawaii so be sure you have evidence of vaccination or a negative test within the last 24 hours together with a driver's license or other legal ID when you come.  (Although I created a Smart Health Card on the Safe Travels site, I also have jpg images of my driver's license, vaccination card, and Safe Access QR code in a dedicated album in the Photos folder on my phone and find that to be a lot handier than having to login to the website.)  Also, notice that we are starting the meeting 15 minutes earlier than we did on September 2.  The fact that restaurants are allowed to accommodate groups as long as tables are arranged properly for social distancing, overall capacity is limited, masks are worn except when eating or drinking, and mingling is prohibited, is actually a very welcome opportunity for us:  We would not be otherwise able to get together.

We will get through this and back to our usual "smorgasbord" of activities, hopefully, sooner rather than later.  To better plan for the future, including trips, you will soon be getting a survey as to what you would like the club to offer in terms of activities and, maybe, benefits and what changes, if any, you would like to see in the conduct of and destinations for our trips.  Be on the lookout for the survey and don't be shy about telling us what you think.

For those of you still on the fence about our January 2020 trip to Aspen-Snowmass, there's not much time left to make a decision, and we need one more person (we have 9)  to make the minimum number for the group airfare:  $735.00 is an excellent price for a flight into Aspen.

Also, for those of you already going who haven't made any trips outside of Hawaii during the pandemic (which includes me), be sure you are familiar with the Safe Travels rules and have a smartphone, other device, or laptop, or have a friend on the trip who is willing to let you use his/hers.  From what I understand, you can register with the Safe Travels site before you leave, downloading a picture of your vaccination card (even if you have already done it for Safe Access), but you need to answer a health questionnaire online and receive a QR code (that little scannable square with all the dots) within 24 hours of stepping on the plane to come back so you can be positively identified upon your return.  If you have not done this, you will face an interminably long line at the airport to get things squared away and will find your baggage behind lock and key when you finally get down there.  Returning residents who do not have vaccination information acceptable to the state or have not received a negative test from a state approved testing provider within 72 hours of leaving for Hawaii (may not be available in Aspen), face a 10 day quarantine upon return.

Skiing on over from local concerns to national news, the venerable Squaw Valley in California, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, is going the course of most of the U.S. professional and college sports teams who have dropped their Native American names and has been/will be renamed Palisades Tahoe.

And speaking about skiing, be sure to read Alan's updates (below) on our scheduled trips for 2022.

A hui hou kakou and take care of yourself.

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

 GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
MANGIAMO BY 604
NAVY MARINE GOLF COURSE
943 VALKENBURGH ST.
October 7 (Thursday) 5 PM (Meeting at 5:45)

As previously indicated, this is the site of the former Sam Sneads which became Seven Palms, Irons, and then closed several years ago.  It had been our "home" for General Membership Meetings under all of its incarnations, is happy to have us back, and will serve us outside on the lanai with table size, table spacing, and seating arranged to conform to current CDC/State/County recommendations and rules.  Just turn off Nimitz onto Valkenburgh, drive down a little over 3/10 of a mile, take a right into the golf course parking lot, and the restaurant is on the second floor of the clubhouse building.  You can also get to Valkenburgh from Radford Drive.  The meeting won't start until 5:45 PM, but they are expecting us to start showing up around 5:00 to order drinks and pupus or dinner.  Also, you will need to bring a legal ID and vaccination card or proof of negative test within the past 24 hours as  Mangiamo will be following the Safe Access rules.  If you have created a Hawaii Smart Health Card on the Safe Travels site, you can also use that. Please RSVP Anita,  anita@hawaiisnowskiclub.com , so we can give the restaurant a "heads up" on how many of us to expect.   Hope to see you on October 7.
