CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

Every Monday evening (except on holidays and, of course, during Hawaii Ski Week), at 4:30 PM, a group of ski club members and their friends play tennis at Keehi Lagoon Courts, off  Lagoon Drive.  Stay in shape and enjoy a "careful social hour" afterwards.

August 26, (Friday), 4:30 PM.  Pau Hana at et al Restaurant and Bar, Kahala Marketplace by Foodland, 4210 Waialae Ave., Suite 401.

September 1 (Thursday), 5:00 PM,  General Membership Meeting at Mangiamo by 604.  Please try to get there at 5:00 PM or shortly thereafter so you can get "situated" before we begin our business at 5:30 and conclude before the music begins at 6:00 PM.

October 6 (Thursday), 5:00 PM,  We are back to Rainbow Bay Marina, Pearl Harbor for the first new membership year Kickoff Meeting since COVID got in the way two years ago.  As with July 7, the food, probably the same basic menu, will be provided by the club. unlike July 7, we'll have some door prizes to make things interesting, so "pencil" this into your schedule now.

December 10 (Saturday)  Following a two year hiatus due to COVID (what else?)  Sam Wright is inviting us back to the Esplanade in Hawaii Kai for our traditional holiday party.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

First, I wish to welcome new members, Diane Voncina, Phillip Halsch, and Dylan Sakurai to the club.  Hope to meet you at upcoming meetings and activities.

Secondly, I want to thank Michael Shintani for his feedback on the problems some, but not all, of us were having, for several weeks, with the credit card payment option via our website.  For some (magical?) reason, the internet gremlins have gone back inside, at least for the present, and it seems to be working now.  Although our ski club website is not a secure site, and a message to this effect may be displayed on your screen, don't let this deter you as the membership form and credit card payment option are on the secure Cognito site, not ours:  When you click on the Join/Renew button, you are transferred to their site.  Further, the payment information, credit card numbers, amounts, etc. are not saved: "Not to worry."  New and renewing members need to complete the online membership form, regardless of how you pay, but if you choose to pay by check, it is after September 15, and you are coming to the Kickoff on October 6, you can just bring your check to Rainbow Bay Marina and save a stamp.

Third, for those of you who are planning on purchasing and using an Ikon pass for our trips, please be sure to read the update below to make sure you get/have the correct pass and don't click in to your skis or board in the morning only to find that you can't get there from here.  Also, please note that Rusutsu is an Epic Pass resort:  Ikon passes will not work there.

Fourth, I want to thank Sylvia (Sam) Wright for inviting us back to the Esplanade in Hawaii Kai for our traditional club Holiday party in December. It will be a pot luck with Secret Santa gift exchange, and maybe more.  Everybody "comes out of the woodwork" for this one so stay tuned for more details as the season approaches.

And, finally, we will be having meetings and activities between October 6 and December 10:  They are just not scheduled yet.

Hope to see you soon.

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

SKI CLUB PAU HANA
at the
ET AL RESTAURANT AND BAR
in the
KAHALA MARKETPLACE BY FOODLAND
4210 Waialae Ave, Suite 401.
Friday, August 26, 4:30 PM to whenever.

Soooo sorry for the late notice of our Pau Hana this Friday at et al in Kahala Marketplace the last Friday of August (next Friday 26th).  Happy Hour is from 2-5 pm so we're probably catching just the tail end for our HSC Pau Hana.  "et al." is located at 4210 Waialae Avenue (in the new strip mall on Waialae Avenue just mauka of Kahala Mall and Kokohead of Zippy's across Hunakai Street).  The Restaurant / Bar is located just inside the Grocery Store; host/hostess podium to the right after coming in the main entrance.  Parking is available for the strip mall but it does get crowded.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
MANGIAMO BY 604
NAVY MARINE GOLF COURSE
943 VALKENBURGH ST.
 September 1 (Thursday) 5 PM

We're back to Mangiamo for our September General Membership Meeting and, although the meeting itself won't begin until 5:30 PM, we'd like you to get there a bit earlier so you can get situated and order your food and drink.    If you haven't yet been to Mangiamo, it is opposite the airport, off of Valkenburgh Street which runs between Nimitz Highway (under the viaduct) and Radford Drive.  It is on the second floor of the golf course's club house. See you there.

ANNUAL KICK-OFF MEETING/COOKOUT
RAINBOW BAY MARINA
57 Arizona Memorial Drive
(next to Restaurant 604)
PEARL HARBOR
October 6 (Thursday) 5:00 PM

Come to our Annual Kick-Off (to the new membership year) Meeting, where the food will be "on the house," at Rainbow Bay Marina, Pearl Harbor, Cabana A.  This is exactly where we had the July meeting, and this time, in addition to free food, we will have some door prizes.  If you haven't already paid by credit card or mailed in your check for the 2022-2023 year, you can bring your check to this meeting, but don't forget to complete the digital membership form accessed through our website.  Rainbow Bay Marina is the outdoor picnic area with cabanas on the right hand side (facing towards the ocean) of Restaurant 604.   We have held our October Kick-Off Meetings and, at least, a couple of  Pre-Trip Packet Pickup Parties here in the past.  For those of you who unfamiliar with the area, enter Pearl Harbor off Kamehameha Highway as if you were going to the Arizona Memorial, take a right on the inner road (Arizona Memorial Place), and drive approximately 1/4 mile.  As soon as you go under the Ford Island viaduct, you are there.  This is BYOB, and please carry out your drink containers rather than deposit of them in the refuse receptacles at the venue or we will forfeit the return of a $100.00 deposit we gave them for cleanup.  Please email me pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.comwith the number in your party, no later than Thursday evening, September 29, so we know how much food to order.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

UPDATE ON SKI TRIPS FOR 2023

Big Sky January 13-22, 2023.

Presently 55 members have registered and we have added 3 double occupancy rooms at the Village Center Condos, next door to the Huntley Hotel which is totally sold out. We finally got the pricing information for lift tickets and they have gone up more than originally estimated. The ticket office rate for a one day adult lift ticket is $180 this year. We were able to get Senior rates of $120/day or $600 for a 5 day pass. Senior rates apply to those 70 and above. Adult rates are $145/day or $725 for 5 days. If you wish to ski additional days can buy lift tickets at these discounted daily rates. Shuttle bus pricing also exceeded our estimates by $50 pp. Your total land package will need to be adjusted by $75 if you are a Senior and by $200 if you are 69 or under, to account for these lift ticket and shuttle bus price increases. For example if you are staying at the Huntley Village View room your total package estimate was $2829 on the Registration Form that you sent in if you are a Senior, but it's now $2904. If you are under 69 it's now $3029. This additional cost will be added to your final December 1 payment. Of course if you purchased an Ikon Pass then the lift ticket price increase doesn't apply and you only need to pay $50 more to cover the increase in your roundtrip shuttle bus fare. Schewe Travel will be sending you a detailed accounting of any changes made to your trip reservation. If you haven't already reserved a seat on the shuttle bus through Schewe Travel you need to do so soon since only a few seats are left. Otherwise you will need to book your own shuttle bus to and from the airport.

Sapporo Snow Festival & Skiing in Niseko, Japan February 11-19, 2023

Presently over 35 members have registered for this trip. We only have 2 double occupancy hotel rooms left so if you are interested in going you should book soon while space is still available. We also need 4 more persons to take the group roundtrip airfare to Sapporo from February 11-19 to make the minimum group airfare price of $1425, which is currently $300 less than the online price. Niseko is an Ikon Pass resort so if you have this pass you can ski for free and get a discount from the published package price. See last month's HSC Newsletter or our website for more detailed information.

Rusutsu, Japan February 18-26, 2023.

Presently over 35 members have registered for this trip and we still have 13 double occupancy hotel rooms left. Rusutsu is an Epic Pass resort so you can ski free with this pass. Rusutsu is more of a Japanese visitor ski resort compared with Niseko which caters more to international visitors especially Kiwis. It has a wonderful new indoor/outdoor onsen. About two-thirds of those who have skied at Rusutsu return again.

Sapporo, Niseko and Rusutsu February 11-26, 2023

Approximately half of the total group will be going on both ski trips for a fabulous 2 weeks in Japan.

If you purchased an Ikon Pass read the important information below:

There are several types of Ikon Passes. The Ikon Pass is the most expensive and currently sells for $1,179. It allows you to ski 7 days at Big Sky and Niseko, Japan plus 48 other resorts with no blackout dates.

The Ikon Base Pass (currently sells for $869) is cheaper for a reason, it only gives you 5 days at Big Sky and Niseko, Japan and has blackout dates including Sunday January 15, 2023 which is during the week we will be at Big Sky. If you have an Ikon Base Pass and wish to ski on this day you will have to buy a separate lift ticket!

If you have the Military, Nurse or College Epic or Base Passes read the fine print to see whether you might have other restrictions associated with your discount.

New this year for Ikon Pass, you need to reserve the days you wish to ski at Big Sky. Simply log into your Ikon Pass account and click on "reservations." You have to select and save each day separately. I was able to reserve January 15-20,2023 in a few minutes. After you submit your reservation you will receive a confirmation email from Ikon Pass. Take a screenshot of the confirmation just in case but it's also on your Ikon Pass App once you link it to your account. BTW I also suggest that you download the Big Sky app for additional information and notifications.

If you are purchasing lift tickets from Schewe Travel, none of the above applies to you. No need to make ticket reservations since the days you are going to ski are already on the tickets.
